The Coffin Was Breathing / Chapter 4 / 5

Chapter 4 - Elena Opens Her Eyes

Elena remained unconscious for two days.

Daniel divided his time between her hospital room and the neonatal unit. Their son, whom they had planned to name Samuel, needed help breathing at first, but his condition steadily improved.

Daniel placed the wooden toy truck beside the incubator.

“You caused all this trouble because you couldn’t wait to meet me,” he whispered.

On the third morning, Elena moved her fingers.

Daniel was sitting beside her, half asleep, when he felt her hand tighten around his.

He looked up.

Her eyes were open.

Confusion passed across her face. Then fear.

“Daniel?”

“I’m here.”

“My baby.”

“He’s alive.”

Elena began to cry.

Daniel pressed her hand against his cheek.

“Samuel is safe. He’s in the neonatal unit. The doctors say he’s getting stronger every hour.”

“My mother-in-law,” Elena whispered. “Marcus.”

“They can’t hurt you anymore.”

Fragments of Elena’s memory returned slowly.

Margaret had arrived early that morning carrying tea and offering to help prepare the nursery. Marcus came later with documents he claimed Daniel had asked Elena to sign.

Elena immediately knew something was wrong.

Daniel never made major financial decisions without speaking to her.

She refused.

After drinking the tea, she became dizzy. She tried to call Daniel, but Marcus took her phone. Elena secretly activated the audio recorder before he threw it beneath the sofa.

When she realized they intended to force her signature, she attempted to escape.

Her final memory was Margaret standing above her, saying Daniel would eventually understand that family loyalty required sacrifice.

Elena looked toward the window.

“They said you chose them over me.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Never.”

“They told me you wanted the money transferred to Marcus. They said you regretted marrying me.”

“Every word was a lie.”

Daniel leaned closer.

“You and Samuel are my family. They knew that. That’s why they tried to make me believe you were gone before I could ask questions.”

Elena closed her eyes as tears slipped down her face.

“I heard them talking about the coffin. I could hear everything, but I couldn’t move.”

Daniel’s breath caught.

“They said you wouldn’t return for two weeks,” she continued. “I tried to stay awake. I kept thinking that if I could move one finger, someone might notice.”

“You moved more than a finger.”

Elena looked at him.

“The baby moved,” Daniel said. “Samuel saved both of you.”

For the first time since opening her eyes, Elena smiled.

A nurse later brought them to the neonatal unit.

Elena was weak, so Daniel pushed her wheelchair beside the incubator. When she saw Samuel, she covered her mouth with both hands.

The nurse carefully placed the baby against her chest.

Samuel stirred at the sound of his mother’s voice.

Elena kissed his forehead.

Daniel stood beside them, one hand resting on Elena’s shoulder and the other touching his son’s tiny back.

For several minutes, the hospital, the investigation, and the betrayal disappeared.

There were only three heartbeats.

All alive.
