Chapter 2 - The Warning She Could Not Send

Elena was taken directly into emergency treatment.
Daniel waited outside beneath harsh hospital lights while doctors fought to stabilize her and the baby. Time became impossible to measure.
A detective named Rachel Moreno arrived shortly after midnight.
She was calm, observant, and careful with her questions.
“Your wife appears to have been sedated,” she explained. “We won’t know the exact substance until the toxicology results return. The doctors believe she may have received more than one dose.”
Daniel stared through the glass doors.
“Will she survive?”
“The medical team is doing everything possible.”
“And the baby?”
“They’re monitoring him closely. There are signs of distress, but he still has a heartbeat.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Detective Moreno placed a sealed plastic bag on the chair beside him. Inside was Elena’s phone.
“We found this beneath the sofa in your living room. The screen was damaged, but our technicians recovered part of a recording.”
She played the audio.
At first, there was only static.
Then Elena’s voice emerged.
“Margaret, I’m not signing anything.”
Daniel leaned forward.
His mother answered.
“You’re being selfish. Daniel worked for that money, and he owes his family.”
“The account belongs to our child.”
Marcus spoke next.
“You think carrying a baby makes you untouchable?”
A chair scraped across the floor.
Elena’s voice became frightened.
“Get out of my house.”
The recording ended.
Daniel’s hands curled into fists.
Six months earlier, Daniel had received a large safety bonus from the construction company. He deposited most of it into an education trust for his unborn son. Only Daniel and Elena could access it together.
Margaret had repeatedly pressured him to invest in Marcus’s property development company, but Daniel refused. Marcus had already lost money in several reckless projects.
Daniel never told them the exact amount in the trust.
Someone else had.
The answer arrived when Detective Moreno showed him a photograph recovered from Marcus’s office.
It was a copy of Daniel and Elena’s financial statement.
At the bottom was a handwritten note:
Transfer requires both signatures before birth.
Daniel felt sick.
“They wanted Elena to sign away the trust.”
Detective Moreno nodded.
“We believe so. But there may be more.”
She explained that Marcus’s company was facing lawsuits, unpaid loans, and possible bankruptcy. One of his creditors had given him five days to produce nearly four hundred thousand dollars.
The trust contained five hundred thousand.
If Elena signed the transfer, Marcus could use the money immediately.
But there was a problem.
Elena had refused.
Daniel began to understand the plan.
Margaret and Marcus knew he was overseas. They believed they had two weeks before his return. They could sedate Elena, forge a death certificate, stage a rapid burial, and claim the baby had died with her.
Later, Marcus could produce forged transfer papers dated before her supposed death.
By the time Daniel discovered the truth, Elena would be buried and the evidence would be gone.
“They were going to bury her alive,” Daniel said.
Detective Moreno did not soften her answer.
“That appears to have been their intention.”
Daniel stood so abruptly that the chair struck the wall.
He wanted to return to the house. He wanted Marcus and Margaret to look him in the eyes and explain how money had become worth more than two lives.
But Elena needed him at the hospital.
So did his son.
Before Detective Moreno left, she gave him another piece of information.
Mrs. Rivera had seen Marcus carrying an unconscious Elena from the upstairs bedroom. She had tried to call emergency services, but Margaret took her phone and claimed Elena had already been examined.
Mrs. Rivera pretended to leave.
Instead, she hid near the back garden and called the police from a neighbor’s house.
The call had been delayed because Margaret gave officers forged medical documentation when they first arrived.
Mrs. Rivera then remained at the funeral, hoping someone would notice the truth.
“She tried to warn you,” Detective Moreno said.
Daniel remembered the slight movement of Mrs. Rivera’s head.

Without her courage, he might have believed the lie.
Without his early return, Elena’s coffin might already have been underground.
