Chapter 3 - The Man Who Signed the Dead

At four in the morning, a surgeon entered the waiting room.

“Elena is stable,” she said. “But the baby must be delivered immediately.”

Daniel signed the consent forms with shaking hands.

He stood beside Elena as the medical team prepared her. She remained unconscious, surrounded by monitors and quiet voices.

He brushed a strand of hair away from her face.

“I’m here,” he whispered. “You’re not alone.”

The delivery took less than an hour, though to Daniel it felt like an entire lifetime.

Their son entered the world small, silent, and pale.

Then a thin cry filled the room.

Daniel covered his mouth as tears ran down his face.

The medical team rushed the baby to neonatal care, but the doctor gave Daniel a reassuring nod.

“He’s fighting.”

Daniel looked toward Elena.

“So is his mother.”

By sunrise, police had arrested Margaret and Marcus.

Dr. Leonard Vale remained missing.

The funeral director provided investigators with security footage showing Marcus delivering the forged death certificate. He had paid in cash and demanded that the burial take place before noon.

Marcus claimed it was an emergency required by family tradition.

There was no such tradition.

Detective Moreno returned to the hospital with an update.

“We searched your brother’s office. We found forged transfer documents, copies of your signatures, and several empty medication containers.”

“Were they used on Elena?”

“We’re waiting for laboratory confirmation.”

“What about Vale?”

“We traced one of his bank accounts. Marcus transferred money to him yesterday.”

Daniel looked through the nursery window at his son, who lay beneath warm lights.

“What kind of doctor agrees to something like this?”

“One who is desperate,” Moreno replied. “Vale lost his medical license two years ago. Your brother has been paying his debts.”

Later that afternoon, Vale was found at a bus station under a false name.

He confessed within hours.

According to his statement, Margaret had called him three days earlier. She told him Elena was emotionally unstable and needed to be calmed before signing family documents.

Vale supplied a strong sedative.

Marcus administered the first dose in Elena’s tea.

When Elena became disoriented, they placed papers in front of her and tried to guide her hand across the signature line. She understood enough to resist.

She knocked the pen away and attempted to reach the front door.

During the struggle, she fell against a table, causing the bruise on her face.

Terrified that she would contact Daniel or the police, Marcus gave her another dose.

Vale warned that it might suppress her breathing.

Margaret answered that quiet breathing would make the funeral more convincing.

Vale claimed he believed they would call an ambulance after obtaining the signature.

No one believed him.

The most damning evidence came from a camera Daniel had forgotten existed.

Months earlier, he had installed a small security camera in the nursery so he and Elena could check on the baby after birth. The camera activated when it detected movement and automatically backed up recordings online.

Marcus carried Elena through the nursery while arranging the coffin downstairs.

The recording captured his conversation with Margaret.

“We should wait until tonight,” Marcus said.

“No,” Margaret replied. “The cemetery workers have been paid. Once she’s underground, Daniel will never know.”

“And the baby?”

“Neither of them was ever supposed to survive this.”

For Daniel, hearing those words destroyed the last trace of hesitation in his heart.

Margaret had raised him. She had attended his military graduation. She had sat in the front row at his wedding.

Yet she had spoken about his wife and son as obstacles to be removed.

Daniel gave the police full access to every financial record and recording he possessed.

When Margaret called the hospital from police custody, Daniel refused the call.

When Marcus asked for his help hiring a lawyer, Daniel sent a single message through the detective.
