Chapter 8 - What the House Owed
The following morning, Daniel called Clara directly.
She almost declined.
Then she answered.
“I’m not calling to ask you to come back,” he said.
Clara remained silent.
“I called Mr. Howard.”
That surprised her.
Daniel continued.
“I told him everything. The gift letter, the conversations, the false statements. All of it.”
“Why now?”
“Because I kept thinking I could apologize without giving anything up.”
He coughed softly before continuing.
“That isn’t an apology.”
Daniel had instructed a real estate agent to sell the blue house. He would surrender the proceeds to the trust and cooperate fully with the investigation.
Their parents were furious.
Their mother had accused him of betraying the family.
Daniel had answered that Lily had been family too.
“The doctors found two possible unrelated donors in the registry,” he said. “Neither is confirmed yet.”
Clara closed her eyes.
“I hope one works.”
“You don’t owe me anything.”
“No,” Clara said. “I don’t.”
For the first time, Daniel did not argue.
The house sold within a month.
After the mortgage balance was paid, the remaining equity returned to the trust. Daniel surrendered additional savings and accepted legal responsibility for his part in concealing the transfer.
Their father reached a settlement requiring him to repay the missing funds and resign as trustee.
Their mother refused every offer to settle.
She insisted she had done what any loving mother would do for her son.
The court disagreed.
The judge ordered restitution, removed her from control of the trust, and referred the falsified records for further investigation.
The house had finally answered.
Its walls, documents, bank transfers, and signatures said what Clara’s family had spent years denying.
