Chapter 3 - We Have Nothing
Clara called her parents five more times.
The first call went unanswered.
During the second, her mother repeated that their money was tied up.
On the third, her father promised to speak with their financial adviser.
On the fourth, he said the adviser had warned them against withdrawing from long-term investments.
On the fifth, Clara stopped asking politely.
“Lily is getting weaker,” she said. “The hospital needs the payment arrangement confirmed.”
Her mother sounded irritated.
“We have already explained our situation.”
“You own two cars.”
“We need transportation.”
“You have a retirement property in Arizona.”
“The market is terrible.”
“You have jewelry, investments, and savings.”
“You do not know our finances.”
Clara pressed her phone against her ear as she stood alone in the hospital corridor.
“I know you could do something.”
Her mother became quiet.
Then she said the words Clara would remember forever.
“Sometimes a parent has to accept what cannot be changed.”
Clara hung up.
Lily’s condition worsened before the financial arrangements could be completed. The hospital continued stabilizing her, but the complex surgery had been scheduled elsewhere, and every delay reduced her chances.
Clara eventually raised the money.
It arrived eleven days too late.
Lily died early one winter morning with Clara beside her, holding her hand and describing the ocean they had planned to visit.
Clara did not call her parents immediately.
A nurse called them.
They arrived hours later. Her mother cried loudly in the hallway. Her father stood against the wall with tears on his cheeks, repeating that they had done everything they could.
Clara watched them without speaking.
At the funeral, Daniel embraced her.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
She wanted to believe him.
He stayed for less than an hour because he had an appointment with a real estate agent.

At the time, she only noticed that he avoided looking at Lily’s photograph beside the flowers.
