Chapter 7 - The Unsigned Form
The nurse returned with the consent form.
Clara held it in both hands.
Her mother began crying before Clara had even spoken.
“Please. Whatever happened before, Daniel is innocent.”
From behind the glass, Daniel lowered his eyes.
Clara turned toward him.
“Are you?”
Daniel opened the communication panel.
His voice came through weakly.
“No.”
Their mother spun toward the door.
“Daniel, stop.”
But he continued.
“I knew about the money.”
Clara felt the old anger sharpen.
“How much did you know?”
“Mom told me the trust was supposed to help the family. She said buying the house was an investment.”
“And Lily?”
Daniel swallowed.
“I knew you had asked them for help.”
“Did you know they refused?”
“Yes.”
The single word broke whatever fragile excuse remained.
Daniel pressed one hand against the glass.
“I told myself you would raise the money. Everyone online was helping. I thought Lily would get the surgery and the house would not matter.”
“But when she didn’t?”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I was ashamed.”
“You still kept it.”
“Yes.”
Their mother stepped between Clara and the glass.
“He was confused. We made the decisions.”
“He signed the gift declaration,” Clara said. “He accepted the money and lied during the trust investigation.”
Daniel looked at her again.
“She’s right.”
Clara examined the consent form.
She could take the test. She could be the match. She could go through the medical process and save the brother who had watched her daughter’s crisis from the comfort of a stolen house.
But donation required more than compatible cells.
It required free consent.
Clara set the pen down.
“I am not agreeing today.”
Her mother dropped to her knees.
That was when the plea began.
That was when Clara spoke of the ninety-two thousand dollars.
And that was when she gave them her final answer.
