THE CHILD THEY CAME TO TAKE / Chapter 7 / 15

Chapter 7 - The Woman Who Died Twice

Elena stared at the screen as though reality had finally become too fragile to trust.

“That isn’t possible.”

The footage played again.

Helena Vale entered Elena’s small staff apartment at 2:13 a.m.

Same sharp cheekbones.

Same narrow mouth.

Same dark hair now streaked with gray.

The same woman Elena had seen bleeding to death in an abandoned clinic six years earlier.

Helena leaned over Sofia.

Whispered.

Placed the drive into the teddy bear.

Then left.

Gabriel checked the metadata.

“No obvious manipulation.”

“Deepfake?” Matteo asked.

“Possible. But the original camera server confirms someone entered the room.”

Elena shook her head.

“I buried her.”

David looked at her.

“No.”

She turned.

“I watched her die.”

“You watched someone who looked like Helena die.”

Elena’s eyes sharpened.

“What do you know?”

David leaned against the wall.

“Helena taught us never to trust a body unless we could verify teeth and DNA.”

Elena stepped toward him.

“You knew.”

“I suspected.”

“For six years?”

“I had other problems.”

Elena punched him.

This time Matteo did not intervene immediately.

David stumbled into the console.

“You let me grieve her.”

“I was trying to stay alive.”

“So was I.”

Matteo handed Mr. Buttons back to Sofia.

“Gabriel. Drive.”

They opened the file.

A document appeared.

HELENA VALE - DEAD MAN’S INDEX

One hundred seventeen names.

Some crossed out.

Some marked ACTIVE.

Some marked LOST.

Matteo found his own.

MATTEO BELLINI - ACTIVE - UNAWARE UNTIL TRIGGER.

Elena’s.

ELENA CRUZ - CUSTODIAN.

Sofia’s.

SOFIA C. - KEY HOLDER.

And Lorenzo’s.

LORENZO BELLINI - FRACTURED AUTHORITY.

Gabriel frowned.

“What does fractured authority mean?”

Isabella answered.

“He lost control.”

“When?”

“I don’t know.”

Another file opened automatically.

Helena appeared on video.

Older than Elena remembered.

Alive.

“If this file is open, Sofia has reached Bellini House.”

Elena covered her mouth.

Helena continued.

“Elena, I know what you believe you saw.”

Tears filled Elena’s eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

Elena whispered, “You should be.”

“I could not contact you. Anyone watching you would have followed me to the remaining children.”

Matteo leaned closer.

Remaining children.

Helena continued.

“Sofia was never the program’s final heir. She was designed as a key.”

Gabriel muttered, “Designed.”

Elena’s anger returned.

Helena seemed almost to answer.

“I use that word because it is the word they used. It is not what she is.”

Sofia sat on the floor with her bear, unaware of the implications.

“She is the only known person carrying genetic markers from four protected bloodlines. Bellini is one.”

Matteo looked at Isabella.

“Four?”

Helena continued.

“Those markers are not valuable because of biology. They unlock legal structures created by four families.”

A diagram appeared.

BELLINI.

VALE.

MORGAN.

REED.

Gabriel went completely still.

Matteo turned.

“Reed?”

Gabriel stared at his surname.

“No.”

Helena continued.

“If Gabriel Reed is present, understand that he was not chosen by Matteo accidentally.”

Gabriel backed away from the monitor.

Matteo looked at him.

“Gabriel?”

“I don’t know anything about this.”

Helena continued.

“Gabriel’s father, Thomas Reed, was one of the attorneys who drafted the original Continuity trusts.”

Gabriel’s face hardened.

“My father sold insurance.”

“No. He was relocated in 1992 under a fabricated identity.”

Matteo saw betrayal in Gabriel’s eyes.

Not aimed at him.

At a dead father.

Helena continued.

“The four-family structure requires biological confirmation before the final vault can be opened. Sofia carries all four markers.”

Elena whispered, “What vault?”

The video cut to a photograph of an old stone building.

Matteo recognized it.

A Bellini property in upstate New York.

Abandoned monastery.

Purchased by his grandfather.

Helena continued.

“Vault Meridian.”

Isabella stepped closer.

“I thought it was destroyed.”

“It wasn’t,” Helena said in the recording.

“Inside are original birth records, embryo logs, financial ledgers, names of participating families, and the identity of every child transferred through the program.”

Celeste whispered, “My sister’s baby.”

Helena continued.

“If you want the truth, go to Meridian.”

Matteo watched carefully.

“But understand this. Lorenzo wants you to open it.”

The image froze.

Then a final sentence appeared.

HE CANNOT ENTER WITHOUT SOFIA.

The timer on the wall continued.

05:21:44.

Matteo stared.

Gabriel said, “It’s a trap.”

“Yes.”

“Then we don’t go.”

Matteo looked at Sofia.

“Lorenzo said everyone loses if we refuse.”

“He may be bluffing.”

Isabella shook her head.

“He never bluffs.”

Matteo turned toward his mother.

“You knew him.”

“I still do.”

“Then tell me what he’ll do.”

Isabella looked at the timer.

“He’ll destroy the clean Bellini empire so you have nothing left except the underground one.”

Matteo understood.

“He wants to force me to inherit his real business.”

“Yes.”

“And Sofia?”

“Insurance.”

“For what?”

Isabella’s expression became grim.

“In case you refuse again.”

Matteo looked at Elena.

“She stays here.”

Elena laughed.

“No.”

“Meridian requires her DNA.”

“Then no one opens it.”

“Helena put that drive in Sofia’s bear because she wanted us to go.”

“Helena also lied to me for six years.”

Matteo stepped closer.

“Elena.”

“No.”

“You came here because you wanted Sofia safe.”

“Yes.”

“My house is compromised. Celeste has hidden access. My father can lock the building remotely. Armed teams already found us.”

Elena’s jaw tightened.

“I’m going with her.”

“That’s what I meant.”

She stared.

Matteo turned to Gabriel.

“Get transportation that isn’t registered to Bellini.”

“How?”

David raised his hand slightly.

“I have a truck.”

Gabriel looked at him.

“You entered a billionaire’s estate during an armed attack in a truck?”

David shrugged.

“It’s a reliable truck.”

For the first time, Matteo understood why Elena had wanted to hit him repeatedly.

They left the underground laboratory through an old emergency tunnel leading beyond the estate wall.

Seven people.

Matteo.

Elena.

Sofia.

Gabriel.

David.

Celeste.

Isabella.

At sunrise, Bellini House appeared quiet behind them.

Then Matteo’s phone rang.

His chief financial officer.

Matteo answered.

“What?”

The man was breathing too fast.

“Federal agents are in Bellini Tower.”

Matteo looked toward the city.

May you like

“They froze the accounts.”

Lorenzo had begun.
