THE CHILD THEY CAME TO TAKE / Chapter 14 / 15

Chapter 14 - The Boy in the Photograph

The photograph showed a boy of approximately seven.

Dark hair.

Brown eyes.

Standing outside a private school in Massachusetts.

Elena stared at the image for almost a full minute.

“He looks like me.”

No one answered.

She touched the screen.

Adrian.

The son she had mourned.

The child she had believed reduced to ashes in a small urn.

Alive.

Maybe.

Gabriel enlarged the metadata.

“Photograph taken three days ago.”

Elena covered her mouth.

“Where is he now?”

“Unknown.”

“School?”

“Empty.”

“What do you mean empty?”

“Federal agents reached it forty minutes ago. Staff gone. Computers stripped.”

Elena stood.

“We go.”

Matteo looked at her.

“Where?”

“The school.”

“There’s nothing there.”

“I don’t care.”

“Elena.”

“My son is alive.”

“Possibly.”

She slapped him.

The entire boat went silent.

Elena stared at Matteo.

Immediately regretted it.

Matteo touched his cheek.

“You done?”

“No.”

“Fair.”

She started crying.

“I buried him.”

Matteo softened.

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

He looked at his mother.

His father.

His dead father who wasn’t his father.

His real father bleeding beside him.

“I know enough.”

Elena looked away.

Sofia crawled into her lap.

“Mommy?”

Elena pulled her close.

“You have a brother.”

Sofia’s eyes widened.

“A big brother?”

“Yes.”

“Does he have a bear?”

Elena laughed through tears.

“I don’t know.”

“We should get him one.”

“Yes.”

Matteo watched them.

Something inside him shifted.

For years, he had thought family was a legal condition.

A surname.

An estate.

A board seat.

Now the Bellini name felt like smoke.

What remained mattered more.

Thomas survived the gunshot.

Barely.

He was taken to a private hospital under federal protection once they reached Albany.

Lorenzo was arrested.

So was Celeste, initially.

Matteo intervened.

“She cooperated.”

The prosecutor looked at him.

“She planted evidence against Elena Cruz.”

“Yes.”

“She facilitated armed entry into Bellini House.”

“Yes.”

“And you’re asking us not to charge her?”

“I’m asking you to consider the thirty years she spent documenting the network.”

Celeste overheard.

Later, in the courthouse hallway, she approached Matteo.

“Why?”

He looked at her.

“Because Elena will decide what she thinks you deserve.”

Celeste looked down.

“She’ll never forgive me.”

“Probably not.”

Celeste almost smiled.

“You really are Isabella’s son.”

Matteo’s expression went flat.

“Don’t insult me.”

Within seventy-two hours, the Continuity files triggered raids in six countries.

Clinics closed.

Bank accounts frozen.

Former executives arrested.

Families demanded DNA reviews.

Adults who had spent decades believing one identity suddenly learned another might exist beneath it.

The world called it the greatest private genetics scandal in modern history.

Matteo called it Tuesday.

Bellini Holdings survived.

Barely.

The board asked Matteo to return.

He refused.

Margaret Sloan visited him personally.

“We need stability.”

“You have it.”

“We need you.”

“No. You need competent management.”

“You built the company.”

“I inherited it.”

“Then transformed it.”

Matteo looked out the hospital window toward Thomas’s room.

“I’m done inheriting other people’s decisions.”

He transferred his remaining voting control into an employee trust.

Financial networks called it astonishing.

Lorenzo called it idiotic.

Matteo considered that confirmation.

Elena remained with Sofia in a protected residence.

For the first three nights, Matteo slept in the adjacent room.

Not because anyone asked him.

Because Sofia had nightmares.

On the fourth morning, Sofia climbed into the kitchen while he made coffee.

“You make bad pancakes.”

Matteo looked at the pan.

“They’re round.”

“They’re black.”

“That’s a type of round.”

She giggled.

Elena entered.

Her hair was loose.

No maid uniform.

No fear in her posture.

She looked at Matteo standing beside burned pancakes and something almost peaceful passed through her expression.

“You could pay someone to cook.”

“I tried that.”

“What happened?”

“She turned out to be part of an international genetic conspiracy.”

Elena laughed.

A real laugh.

Matteo stared.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“That was something again.”

“You’re funny when you don’t try.”

“I’m never trying.”

“I know.”

For a moment, none of the past existed.

Then Gabriel entered.

He placed a folder on the table.

“We traced Adrian’s school transport.”

Elena stood immediately.

“Where?”

“Private airstrip.”

Her heart sank.

“When?”

“Two hours before the federal raid.”

“Destination?”

Gabriel hesitated.

“Rome.”

Matteo frowned.

“Why Rome?”

“There’s more.”

Gabriel opened the folder.

Passenger manifest.

Adrian listed under a false name.

One adult traveling with him.

DR. HELENA VALE.

Elena stared.

“She took him.”

Gabriel nodded.

Elena’s expression became rage.

“She kept my son.”

“We don’t know why.”

“I don’t care why.”

Matteo said quietly, “You will when we find her.”

Elena looked at him.

“When?”

May you like

Matteo pushed the burned pancakes aside.

“Now.”
