THE CHILD THEY CAME TO TAKE / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1 - The Night the Gates Exploded

The first explosion shook Bellini House hard enough to make the chandelier scream.

Crystal pendants rattled above the marble foyer as every security officer spun toward the front doors. Beyond the glass, headlights burned through the evening mist. Three black vehicles had stopped outside the iron gates, engines running, their beams forming white blades across the gardens.

Elena Cruz pulled Sofia against her body.

Her daughter’s teddy bear fell to the floor.

“Oh God,” Elena whispered. “They found me.”

Matteo Bellini did not move.

Less than thirty seconds earlier, two of his own security officers had forced Elena onto her knees in front of the mansion staff after a jeweled antique clock had supposedly been found inside her locker.

Celeste Morgan, head housekeeper for almost twenty years, had called Elena a thief.

Had grabbed her hair.

Had kicked dirty water across her uniform.

And then Sofia had pointed her tiny finger at Celeste and cried, “She put it in Mommy’s locker!”

Now Celeste stood near the staircase, her face drained of color.

Gabriel Reed raised his phone.

“The security footage proves the clock was planted.”

Matteo looked at Celeste.

“Who paid you?”

Celeste backed away.

Before she could answer, another violent bang echoed from the gates.

The foyer windows trembled.

Security officers reached for their weapons.

Matteo stepped in front of Elena and Sofia.

Gabriel stared through the glass doors, then looked down at his phone again.

His expression changed.

“They’re not here for Elena.”

Matteo turned slowly.

Gabriel’s eyes moved toward the little girl clutching Elena’s waist.

“They’re here for Sofia.”

Elena went completely still.

Matteo’s gaze dropped to the black-and-gold pendant hanging from Elena’s hand.

He knew that symbol.

A black sun surrounded by a thin ring of gold.

He had seen it once before.

Twenty-nine years ago.

Around his mother’s neck.

Matteo seized Elena’s wrist.

“Where did you get that?”

“Not now.”

“Tell me.”

“Matteo, please.”

The first gunshot shattered one of the gatehouse cameras.

Every security radio erupted at once.

“Perimeter breach!”

“Two vehicles through the north entrance!”

“Movement by the east wall!”

Matteo’s eyes sharpened.

Bellini House had been designed like a palace, but beneath the marble, paintings, and old family prestige was a security system that had been built after his father’s kidnapping attempt decades earlier.

Matteo grabbed Sofia with one arm and Elena with the other.

“With me.”

Celeste suddenly ran.

Gabriel shouted, “Stop her!”

Celeste reached the side corridor.

A security officer moved to block her.

She pulled a small black device from her pocket.

Elena saw it first.

“Get down!”

Celeste pressed the button.

Half the foyer lights died.

The emergency shutters began lowering over the windows.

Except the front doors.

Those locks clicked open.

Matteo stared at Celeste.

“You opened my house.”

Celeste looked at him with something close to pity.

“No, Mr. Bellini.”

She stepped backward into darkness.

“I opened your tomb.”

The front doors burst inward.

Security officers fired toward the shadows outside.

Matteo dragged Elena and Sofia behind a marble column.

Gabriel returned fire from the opposite side.

Staff screamed and fled toward the kitchens.

Sofia covered her ears.

“Mommy!”

“I’m here, baby.”

Elena curled around her daughter.

Matteo noticed the instinctive way she positioned herself.

Not like a frightened housekeeper.

Like someone who had been trained to protect another person under fire.

He leaned close.

“Who are you?”

Elena’s eyes met his.

Before she could answer, a man outside shouted through a loudspeaker.

“Elena Cruz!”

Silence rippled through the foyer.

“You have something that belongs to us.”

Elena’s face tightened.

The voice continued.

“Send out the girl, and everyone else walks away.”

Matteo looked at Sofia.

Then back at Elena.

Elena whispered, “They’ll kill her the moment they get her.”

Matteo’s jaw flexed.

“Why?”

“Because she can identify something they spent thirty years burying.”

Matteo stared at her.

“What?”

Elena opened her palm.

The pendant caught the emergency light.

“Your family.”

Matteo’s expression froze.

A bullet struck the column inches from his head.

Gabriel shouted, “Safe room! Now!”

Matteo lifted Sofia.

Elena ran beside him.

They rushed through the library, into a private corridor, and through a hidden steel door behind an oak bookcase.

Gabriel entered behind them and sealed it.

The gunfire became muffled.

Sofia cried silently against Matteo’s shoulder.

Matteo lowered her carefully.

Then he turned to Elena.

“No more lies.”

Elena looked at her daughter.

Then at the black-and-gold pendant.

“You really want the truth?”

“I want to know why armed men are attacking my home for a five-year-old child.”

Elena swallowed.

“Because five years ago, Sofia was born with a name I was ordered never to say.”

Matteo waited.

Elena’s voice broke.

“Bellini.”

The room went silent.

Matteo stared at her.

“What did you say?”

“She was born Sofia Bellini.”

Matteo’s eyes narrowed.

“That’s impossible.”

Elena gave a bitter laugh.

“You have no idea what’s impossible in your family.”

Gabriel’s phone vibrated.

He checked the message.

His face changed again.

“What?”

Gabriel looked at Matteo.

“The attackers just withdrew.”

Matteo glanced toward the monitors.

The black vehicles were reversing away from the estate.

Too quickly.

Too cleanly.

Matteo immediately understood.

“They weren’t trying to take her.”

Elena looked horrified.

Gabriel nodded.

“They were testing our response.”

“For what?”

Before Gabriel could answer, another message arrived.

He opened it.

A photograph filled the screen.

An older man was tied to a chair in a dark room.

Blood ran from his temple.

Matteo recognized him instantly.

His uncle, Vittorio Bellini.

Under the photograph was a single sentence.

WE HAVE THE LAST MAN WHO KNOWS WHICH CHILD SURVIVED.

Matteo looked toward Sofia.

For the first time that night, Elena stopped pretending.

Her shoulders fell.

Her voice became almost inaudible.

“They know.”

Matteo stepped closer.

“Know what?”

Elena looked him directly in the eyes.

“That Sofia isn’t the child they’ve been hunting.”

Matteo felt cold spread through his body.

“Then who is?”

Elena turned toward the sealed steel door as gunfire suddenly erupted again from deep inside the mansion.

This time, not outside.

Inside.

May you like

Her answer came in a whisper.

“The other one.”
