Chapter 14 - The Son Who Chose a Different Name

Daniel Reed entered Arthur's protected residence wearing a federal maintenance uniform.

The badge was counterfeit.

The work order was real.

Someone inside the protection system had submitted it.

Daniel passed the outer checkpoint at 8:14 p.m.

By 8:19, he was inside.

Arthur sat in a second-floor study, reading Marianne's old letters.

A federal guard stood outside.

Daniel carried a toolbox.

Inside were a suppressed handgun and a small electronic jammer.

He reached the stairwell.

Then his phone vibrated.

Julian was calling.

Daniel stopped.

He had no reason to answer.

Yet he did.

"Daniel."

Silence.

Julian stood inside a command vehicle three streets away.

"We know who your mother is."

Daniel said nothing.

"We know Lydia raised you under another name."

Still silence.

"We also know Victor used you."

That produced a response.

"You know nothing about Victor."

"He built your life around revenge."

"My mother taught me the truth."

"What truth?"

"That your grandfather destroyed our family."

Julian looked at Agent Kim.

Agents were moving into position.

He needed Daniel talking.

"My grandfather investigated fraud."

"He destroyed Victor's career."

"Victor built his career on theft."

Daniel's breathing changed.

Julian continued.

"Your mother told you Arthur abandoned her."

"He did."

"She disappeared."

"He chose Marianne."

"He searched for Lydia for years."

Daniel went silent.

Julian had found Arthur's old private investigator records that afternoon.

Payments continued for nine years after Lydia vanished.

Arthur had never stopped searching.

"Lydia told you he forgot her," Julian said. "He didn't."

"You're lying."

"I can show you."

Julian sent photographs of the records.

Daniel's phone received them.

For nearly thirty seconds, nothing happened.

Then Daniel whispered, "He looked for her?"

"Every year."

Daniel sat down on the stairwell.

His entire identity had been constructed around abandonment.

Victor had taught him that Arthur stole his mother's family.

Lydia taught him that Julian and Nathan inherited what belonged to him.

But paperwork did not care about stories.

Arthur had searched.

Paid detectives.

Sent letters.

Contacted embassies.

He had even opened a trust in Lydia's name in case she returned.

Daniel stared at the phone.

Julian said, "You still have a choice."

"No."

"Yes."

"You think one document changes what I've done?"

"No."

Julian's voice softened.

"But what you do next still matters."

Daniel looked toward the second floor.

The gun remained inside his toolbox.

Then another voice sounded behind him.

A federal guard.

"Sir?"

Daniel slowly raised his hands.

He surrendered without firing.

Arthur came downstairs afterward.

He saw Daniel sitting in handcuffs.

And immediately knew.

"Lydia's son?"

Daniel looked at him.

Arthur's face filled with emotions Julian could barely name.

Grief.

Shock.

Regret.

Recognition.

"You have her eyes," Arthur said.

Daniel looked away.

Later, Daniel agreed to cooperate.

He gave investigators addresses.

Passwords.

Account codes.

And one private communications server Lydia believed nobody knew existed.

Through that server, federal agents found her.

A private airfield outside the city.

Lydia was preparing to leave the country.

At 11:46 p.m., agents arrested her beside a small jet.

She did not resist.

When Julian arrived, Lydia looked at him through the open car door.

"So you're Marianne's eldest."

Julian stared at the aunt he had never known.

"You lost."

Lydia smiled.

"No."

That smile reminded him of Serena.

Of Marcus.

Of Victor.

Confidence built on knowledge others did not possess.

"You stopped a bank takeover," Lydia said.

"Congratulations."

Julian stepped closer.

"What haven't we found?"

Lydia looked toward the dark runway.

May you like

Then back at him.

"You still think Metropolitan Crown was the target."
