Chapter 12 - The Morning the Bank Was Supposed to Die

At 6:20 Saturday morning, Metropolitan Crown looked peaceful.
Branches had not opened.
The streets were nearly empty.
Inside the central data center, however, more than forty federal cybersecurity specialists worked beside the bank's engineers.
Julian stood with Nathan and Agent Kim.
Arthur was inside a protected location.
The redevelopment vote began at 7:00.
Victor's attack was expected at 6:30.
At exactly 6:29, nothing happened.
6:30.
Still nothing.
Nathan watched network traffic.
"Too quiet."
Julian agreed.
Victor knew Marcus had survived.
He would assume the plan was compromised.
6:32.
A technician spoke.
"Wait."
Hundreds of authentication requests appeared simultaneously.
Then thousands.
The network monitors turned red.
"Attack started."
Automated scripts attempted to lock legitimate users out while initiating transfers from corporate accounts.
Nathan's detection system began isolating compromised tokens.
"He's using old credentials."
Julian watched accounts flash across the screen.
Many belonged to the shadow network.
Victor was moving money.
Not stealing from the bank.
Removing evidence.
"Freeze the destination accounts," Julian ordered.
Agent Kim's team contacted international authorities.
Then the building lights went out.
Emergency generators activated.
Nathan cursed.
"Physical power attack."
Someone had targeted the electrical substation.
Federal agents moved through the data center.
The cyberattack intensified.
Then Julian's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
Victor Vale spoke.
"Julian."
The voice was older than in Samuel's recording.
Calm.
Almost pleasant.
"Victor."
"Your mother would be disappointed."
Julian felt anger rise.
"You don't get to speak about her."
"Marianne was remarkable."
"You threatened her."
"I educated her."
"You destroyed my family."
Victor laughed softly.
"No, Julian. Families destroy themselves. I simply give them opportunities."
Julian signaled technicians to trace the call.
Victor continued.
"Your father is alive because I allowed it."
"Then your plan failed."
"Did it?"
A live news alert appeared on a monitor.
Regional President Arthur Vance implicated in decades-long banking fraud.
Documents had been released to multiple news organizations.
Within seconds, social media exploded.
Customers began accessing online accounts.
Traffic surged.
Panic.
Victor had launched the reputational attack.
But Julian had prepared.
Northbridge released an immediate statement confirming the acquisition audit and publicly identifying suspected document manipulation.
Federal regulators announced that Metropolitan Crown remained solvent.
Arthur appeared live by secure video.
He did not hide.
He admitted the bank had been infiltrated.
Promised full cooperation.
And most importantly, he told customers deposits were safe.
Victor went silent on the phone.
Julian smiled slightly.
"You counted on my father protecting his reputation."
Arthur had done the opposite.
He exposed everything.
Victor's greatest weapon had been secrecy.
Now it was disappearing.
Julian said, "Your mistake was thinking shame would make us turn on each other."
Victor's voice changed.
"Don't celebrate yet."
The call disconnected.
A technician shook his head.
"Lost trace."
Nathan stared at the screen.
Then suddenly went pale.
"Julian."
"What?"
"The attack isn't aimed at customer accounts anymore."
"Where?"
Nathan enlarged a network map.
One system remained exposed.
Vault security.
Specifically, downtown branch vaults.
Serena's branch.
Box 417.
Julian understood instantly.
Victor still wanted Samuel's evidence.
But Box 417 was empty.
Unless he did not know that.
Agent Kim deployed teams.
At 7:18, alarms triggered at Serena's former branch.
Cameras showed three masked people entering through a maintenance corridor.
Federal agents surrounded the building.
Two intruders surrendered.
The third entered the vault.
When agents reached him, he had opened Box 417.
Inside was only one thing.
A handwritten note Julian had placed there the night before.
TOO LATE.
The intruder stared at it.
Then removed his mask.
Agent Kim received the photograph.
She showed Julian.
He had never seen the man before.
Arthur had.
His voice came through the secure line.
"That's Victor."
May you like
After more than thirty years, Victor Vale was finally in custody.
But Lydia Vance was still missing.
