Chapter 11 - The Poison in the Water

Marcus survived.
Barely.
Hospital tests showed a fast-acting toxin in the water bottle left beside his bed.
The seal appeared intact.
Someone had injected poison through a microscopic puncture beneath the label.
Victor had reached inside a federal holding facility.
That frightened even Agent Kim.
Marcus remained unconscious for eighteen hours.
During that time, investigators traced the warehouse computers.
Most drives had been destroyed.
One survived.
It contained a list of scheduled operations.
Many were coded.
One was not.
A.V. REMOVAL - SATURDAY 6:30.
Saturday was the next day.
Arthur looked at Julian.
"Removal."
Julian did not need translation.
Victor intended to kill him.
Agent Kim immediately placed Arthur under federal protection.
Arthur objected.
"I won't hide."
"You will if you want to stay alive."
Arthur looked furious.
Julian intervened.
"She's right."
Arthur stared at him.
For years, their relationship had been formal, more boardroom than family.
Now Julian saw something unfamiliar in his father's eyes.
Trust.
"You'll stay with Nathan?" Arthur asked.
"We'll finish this."
Arthur nodded.
The moment was small.
But after everything Victor had manipulated, it felt significant.
Julian and Nathan returned to Northbridge's secure office.
They began tracing Crown Meridian Partners.
The fund's ownership structure was intentionally complicated.
Trusts owned companies.
Companies owned other trusts.
Directors were dead, missing, or fictitious.
But one payment repeated.
Every quarter, Crown Meridian sent consulting fees to a private foundation.
Marlowe Foundation.
Nathan searched the directors.
One name appeared.
Dr. Lydia Vance.
Julian stared.
"Who is that?"
Nathan shook his head.
"No idea."
Arthur, speaking through a secure video call, went silent.
Julian noticed.
"Dad?"
Arthur did not answer.
"Dad, who is Lydia Vance?"
Arthur closed his eyes.
"My sister."
Neither Julian nor Nathan had ever heard her name.
Arthur explained.
Lydia was eight years younger.
Brilliant.
Unstable.
At nineteen, she left home after a violent argument with Henry.
Arthur never saw her again.
Henry refused to discuss her.
Marianne knew only fragments.
"Why did she leave?" Nathan asked.
Arthur looked ashamed.
"Because she accused our father of destroying Victor Vale."
Julian felt cold.
Lydia had met Victor while attending university.
He was nearly fifteen years older.
Henry believed Victor was manipulating her.
When Henry began investigating Victor's businesses, Lydia interpreted it as a personal attack.
She disappeared with Victor soon afterward.
"Is she alive?" Julian asked.
Arthur shook his head.
"I thought she died decades ago."
"Why?"
"I received a death notice from Europe."
"Did you verify it?"
Arthur hesitated.
No.
Nathan leaned back.
"If Lydia is alive, then Samuel was right."
Someone inside the Vance family was connected to Victor.
Not Arthur.
Not Marianne.
Not Julian.
Not Nathan.
Lydia.
They searched Marlowe Foundation's records.
It funded housing programs, rehabilitation centers, and financial literacy programs.
Respectable.
Then Nathan noticed something.
Several employees later appeared in Victor's shell companies.
The foundation was recruitment.
Victor and Lydia had spent decades identifying vulnerable people, paying for education, solving their problems, then demanding loyalty.
Marcus was one.
Serena may have been another.
Julian suddenly understood Victor's power.
He did not simply bribe employees.
He built them.
Agent Kim called.
Marcus was awake.
And asking specifically for Julian.
At the hospital, Marcus looked weaker.
"You found Lydia," he whispered.
Julian sat beside him.
"Yes."
Marcus laughed softly.
"Then you're closer than anyone has ever gotten."
"Where is she?"
Marcus looked toward the door.
"Victor is the face."
"And Lydia?"
"The architect."
Julian waited.
Marcus swallowed.
"Tomorrow morning, the state redevelopment committee votes on the eastern transit corridor."
"That's public."
"Yes."
"If approved, land values explode."
"Exactly."
"But Metropolitan Crown hasn't collapsed."
Marcus's eyes met his.
"It doesn't need to."
Julian understood.
Victor had another plan.
Marcus whispered, "They're going to crash the bank's systems during the vote."
A coordinated cyberattack would freeze customer accounts, interrupt payments, and trigger panic.
At the same time, fabricated evidence of Arthur's fraud would be released publicly.
Depositors would rush to withdraw money.
Markets would react.
The board would suspend Arthur.
Then Crown Meridian would offer emergency capital.
A rescue.
In exchange for control.
"When?" Julian asked.
Marcus looked at the clock.
"Six thirty tomorrow."
May you like
The same time as Arthur's scheduled removal.
Victor planned to kill Arthur and seize the bank simultaneously.
