THE CHAIN BENEATH THE STAIRS / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5 - Behind the Locked Door)

The basement smelled of concrete, dust, and cold air.

Marcus stepped through first.

“Claire?”

A single lamp glowed near the far wall.

The room had once been part of the estate’s old wine cellar.

Now it held a narrow cot, a folding chair, two bottles of water, and a small portable heater that was not running.

Claire sat on the floor beside the cot.

Her long dark-blonde hair hung loose around her face.

The cream sweater Marcus had given her was missing one button.

She looked exhausted.

But alive.

Marcus crossed the room in three steps.

He dropped to his knees.

Claire stared at him as if she could not trust what she was seeing.

Then he said her childhood nickname.

“Claire Bear.”

Her face broke.

Marcus caught her before she fell forward.

She grabbed his coat.

“You came.”

“Of course I came.”

“I thought he deleted the message.”

“He tried.”

Lily appeared in the doorway.

“Mommy?”

Claire pulled away from Marcus instantly.

“Lily.”

The child ran.

Marcus shifted aside as mother and daughter collided.

Claire wrapped both arms around Lily.

Lily buried her face against her.

“I told.”

“I know.”

“I was scared.”

“I know, baby.”

“Are you mad?”

Claire stared at her.

“Mad?”

“Daddy said not to tell.”

Claire kissed her forehead.

“You saved me.”

Behind them, Officer Davis entered.

“Mrs. Carter?”

Claire looked up.

“I’m Officer Davis. Do you need medical help?”

“Yes.”

Julian shouted from outside.

“She’s unstable!”

Claire flinched.

Marcus stood so fast the folding chair tipped over.

Davis placed a hand against Marcus’s chest.

“I’ve got it.”

Julian continued.

“She locked herself in there!”

Claire laughed.

It was a terrible sound.

Weak and disbelieving.

“Ask him why the chain was outside.”

Julian stopped.

Davis crouched.

“Mrs. Carter, can you tell me what happened?”

Claire held Lily closer.

“My husband locked me in here yesterday.”

“Why?”

“Because I found out he was stealing from my trust.”

Julian shouted, “That is not true.”

Davis turned.

“Sir, remain upstairs.”

“He’s my husband,” Claire said.

Marcus looked at her.

Claire’s eyes were no longer frightened.

Not completely.

Something else had replaced part of the fear.

Rage.

“He forged documents. He moved money. When I confronted him, he took my phone.”

“Did he hurt you?”

Claire looked down at her wrist.

There was bruising but nothing severe.

“He grabbed me. Dragged me down the stairs. Took my keys.”

Davis nodded.

“Anything else?”

Claire hesitated.

Then she looked toward the back wall.

“He was looking for something.”

Marcus followed her gaze.

“For what?”

Claire swallowed.

“The evidence.”

Julian became silent outside.

Marcus noticed.

“So you do have copies.”

Claire nodded.

“Where?”

She looked at Lily.

“No.”

Marcus understood.

“Don’t say it here.”

Davis understood too.

Claire continued.

“I found accounts. Transfers. Loans against property. But that isn’t the worst part.”

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

“What is?”

Claire stared toward the open doorway.

“He wasn’t planning to keep me down here forever.”

Lily looked up.

Marcus lowered his voice.

“What does that mean?”

Claire’s fingers tightened around her daughter.

“I heard him talking to someone last night.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“What did he say?”

Claire closed her eyes.

“That after Friday, nobody would question why I was gone.”

Marcus stared at her.

It was Wednesday.

Two days.

“What happens Friday?”

Claire shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Officer Davis stood.

“We’ll talk at the hospital.”

Claire grabbed his sleeve.

“No.”

“Mrs. Carter.”

“You need to search his office before he destroys everything.”

“We can secure the scene.”

“He has a second phone.”

Julian moved outside.

Marcus heard a footstep.

Officer Davis turned.

The second officer called out.

“Stay where you are.”

Claire whispered, “He keeps it somewhere in the house. I’ve seen him use it.”

Marcus looked around.

“What evidence did you hide?”

Claire’s eyes met his.

“Dad’s original trust. Julian’s transfer records. And something I found yesterday morning.”

“What?”

“A letter.”

“From who?”

“Julian.”

Marcus waited.

Claire shook her head.

“Not to me.”

For the first time since opening the door, Marcus saw genuine terror return to her face.

“The letter was addressed to a doctor.”

Davis’s expression hardened.

“What did it say?”

Claire took a breath.

“He wanted me declared incompetent.”

Marcus looked toward the doorway.

Julian was no longer shouting.

That frightened him more than the yelling had.

Claire continued.

“He had already written the symptoms he wanted the doctor to document.”

“What symptoms?”

“Confusion. Paranoia. Emotional instability. Memory loss.”

Marcus remembered every time Julian had described Claire as emotional.

He understood.

This had not begun yesterday.

It had not begun when Claire discovered the stolen money.

Julian had been building the story for months.

Maybe years.

Claire whispered, “He was creating a version of me nobody would believe.”

Officer Davis said, “Let’s get you out of here.”

Marcus helped his sister stand.

Lily refused to release her hand.

When they reached the doorway, Claire stopped.

She looked at Julian.

He stood several feet away between the officers.

For a moment they simply stared at each other.

Julian recovered first.

His voice became soft.

“Claire.”

She said nothing.

“You know I was trying to help you.”

Marcus moved forward.

Claire caught his arm.

“No.”

Julian looked at his wife.

“Tell them about the episodes.”

Claire’s face went still.

“What episodes?”

“You know.”

“No. Say it.”

Julian hesitated.

Claire stepped closer.

“Say what you told everyone about me.”

“Claire.”

“Say it.”

Julian’s calm cracked.

“You’re not well.”

Lily started crying again.

Claire stared at him.

Then she smiled.

Not warmly.

Not kindly.

It was the smile of someone who had finally understood the weapon being used against her.

“You made one mistake, Julian.”

He said nothing.

“You convinced everyone I couldn’t trust my own memory.”

She looked at Marcus.

“So I stopped trusting it.”

Marcus frowned.

Claire continued.

“And I started recording everything.”

Julian’s face drained of color.

Marcus understood immediately.

The hidden evidence was not merely financial.

Claire had recordings.

Julian whispered, “Where?”

May you like

Claire looked directly at him.

“That’s what you should be afraid of.”
