THE CHAIN BENEATH THE STAIRS / Chapter 4 / 15

Chapter 4 - What Lily Saw)

Lily had seen more than anyone realized.

The previous afternoon, she had been sitting beneath the dining room table with crayons and a coloring book while her parents argued in the library.

She was not supposed to hear.

Children were rarely supposed to hear the things that changed their lives.

But adults forgot how quietly children could disappear into the edges of a room.

Claire’s voice had come first.

“You forged my signature.”

Julian answered calmly.

“You signed those documents.”

“No, I didn’t.”

“You don’t remember signing them.”

“I remember everything.”

A chair scraped.

Lily stopped coloring.

Claire said, “I spoke to Martin Ellis.”

Julian’s voice changed.

Only slightly.

“You called your father’s attorney?”

“He confirmed there was never an amendment.”

“Claire.”

“You stole from me.”

“Lower your voice.”

“You moved money out of Lily’s trust.”

Lily heard her own name and crawled closer to the library door.

Through the narrow opening, she saw her mother standing beside the desk.

Claire held a stack of papers.

Julian stood near the fireplace.

His hands were in his pockets.

He looked strangely relaxed.

Claire was not.

“You transferred four million dollars to Carter Strategic Holdings.”

Julian sighed.

“It was an investment.”

“It’s your company.”

“It’s our company.”

“No. It’s yours.”

“Everything I do is for this family.”

“You put our house up as collateral.”

Julian looked toward the doorway.

Lily ducked back.

When she peeked again, Claire was holding her phone.

“I sent copies to Marcus.”

Julian moved.

Fast.

He snatched the phone.

Claire stepped back.

“Give it to me.”

“Did you send them?”

“Yes.”

That was a lie.

Lily knew because she had watched her mother trying to send something earlier, but the internet had stopped working.

Julian had disconnected the router.

Claire had only managed to leave Marcus one voice message before the signal disappeared.

Julian looked at the screen.

“Where are the copies?”

“Somewhere you’ll never find them.”

He grabbed her arm.

Claire slapped him.

Lily nearly cried out.

Julian stared at his wife.

Then smiled.

It frightened Lily more than yelling would have.

“You’re tired.”

“Let go.”

“You haven’t been yourself lately.”

“Don’t start.”

“Your brother already thinks you’re unstable.”

“No, he doesn’t.”

“Your doctor might.”

Claire stopped.

“What did you do?”

Julian’s smile faded.

“I’m trying to protect you.”

“You changed my medical records.”

“I said I’m protecting you.”

Claire tried to pull away.

Julian tightened his grip.

“Let me go.”

He dragged her toward the hallway.

Lily crawled backward beneath the table.

Her mother kicked against the floor.

“Julian.”

He kept moving.

“Where are you taking me?”

“Somewhere you can calm down.”

Claire saw Lily.

Only for one second.

Their eyes met.

Claire did not scream.

She did something far more important.

She shook her head.

Stay hidden.

Lily covered her mouth with both hands.

Julian dragged Claire down the basement stairs.

A door slammed.

Then came the sound of chain links.

Lily waited.

She did not know how long.

Eventually Julian came back upstairs.

He was carrying Claire’s phone.

He walked through the foyer as if nothing had happened.

That evening, he made Lily macaroni and cheese.

She did not eat it.

“Where’s Mommy?”

Julian looked at her across the table.

“She went away.”

“I saw you take her downstairs.”

His fork stopped.

Lily wished immediately that she had not spoken.

Julian put the fork down.

He walked around the table.

Then he crouched beside her.

“Listen to me.”

Lily began shaking.

“Your mother is sick.”

“No.”

“She gets confused.”

“No.”

“She might say things that aren’t true.”

“She wants out.”

Julian’s face hardened.

“If you talk about the basement, you could make things much worse for her.”

Lily stared at him.

“What worse?”

He touched her hair.

“Your mother could disappear forever.”

Lily started crying.

Julian wiped one tear from her cheek.

“So tomorrow, if Uncle Marcus calls, where is Mommy?”

Lily did not answer.

Julian repeated, “Where is Mommy?”

“Boston.”

“Good girl.”

That night, Lily waited until the house went quiet.

Then she slipped out of bed.

She carried a cup of water down the staircase.

The basement door was chained.

She knelt beside it.

“Mommy?”

Nothing.

Then a whisper.

“Lily?”

The girl pressed both hands against the door.

“Mommy.”

Claire’s voice was weak.

“Listen to me. You have to find Uncle Marcus.”

“Daddy said you’re sick.”

“I’m not sick.”

“He said I’ll make you disappear.”

Claire went silent.

When she spoke again, her voice trembled.

“Baby, your father is lying.”

Lily cried harder.

“What do I do?”

“Tell Marcus the truth.”

“I’m scared.”

“I know.”

“Daddy will be mad.”

“I know.”

Claire breathed against the other side of the door.

“Being brave doesn’t mean you aren’t scared.”

Lily pressed her forehead to the wood.

“What does it mean?”

“It means you tell the truth even while you’re scared.”

A floorboard creaked above them.

Claire whispered, “Go.”

Lily ran.

Halfway up the stairs, her sock caught on something.

She looked down.

A silver button.

She picked it up.

The next afternoon, when Marcus came through the front door, Lily carried that button in her pocket.

And when Officer Davis finally asked her who had put Claire behind the basement door, Lily remembered her mother’s words.

Being brave doesn’t mean you aren’t scared.

She pointed at Julian.

“Daddy.”

Officer Davis’s entire posture changed.

He called for additional assistance.

Julian backed away.

“This is insane.”

Davis said, “Do you have a key?”

“No.”

“Where is it?”

“I told you. I don’t have one.”

Marcus stepped toward the chain.

“Then cut it.”

Davis looked at the door.

A weak knock came from behind it again.

That was enough.

The second patrol unit arrived six minutes later.

Officer Davis returned carrying bolt cutters.

Marcus held Lily’s hand as they descended.

Julian followed despite being told to remain upstairs.

When he saw the cutters, he finally lost control.

He shoved Marcus.

He shouted.

He claimed the basement was his property.

Marcus grabbed his wrist and knocked his arm aside.

“Cut that chain. Now.”

Davis positioned the jaws around the thick metal.

Julian lunged.

The second officer blocked him.

The cutters snapped shut.

CLANG.

The chain fell.

Then came Claire’s voice.

“Marcus...?”

May you like

Marcus opened the door.

What he saw on the other side would haunt him for years.
