Chapter 2 - the agreement beneath the wedding

At breakfast, Celeste Vale discussed the wedding as though the early-morning incident had never happened.

“The final guest count is three hundred and twelve,” she said. “The governor’s office confirmed two representatives. The Hawthorne family will arrive before noon.”

Graham remained behind his newspaper.

Preston sat beside Evelyn, answering messages while Sophie pushed pieces of strawberry around her plate.

Evelyn watched him place the silver key inside his jacket.

“Where were you before you found us this morning?” she asked.

Preston did not look up.

“Taking a call.”

“In the service hall?”

“I walked downstairs because I didn’t want to wake you.”

“Who were you speaking to?”

“A client.”

“At four in the morning?”

“My clients do not all live in this time zone.”

Celeste set down her coffee cup.

“Must we interrogate the groom two days before the wedding?”

“I asked him a question.”

“And he answered.”

Sophie looked at Evelyn but said nothing.

After breakfast, Preston left for the hotel with his brother. Celeste took Sophie to a dress fitting, giving Evelyn an opportunity to enter Graham’s office.

Her father was standing at the window when she closed the door.

“Do we have a Room 17?”

Graham became very still.

“Where did you hear that?”

“Sophie.”

His reaction answered more than his words.

“What is it?”

“An old storage room.”

“Where?”

“The west wing.”

“The west wing has been sealed since Nora disappeared.”

Graham turned from the window.

“Some things are sealed for a reason.”

“Preston has a key.”

For the first time, Graham looked alarmed.

“You saw it?”

“This morning.”

Graham walked to his desk and opened a drawer. Inside was a collection of labeled keys. He searched through them twice.

One hook was empty.

“Who else can access that room?” Evelyn asked.

“Your mother and I.”

“What is stored inside?”

“Old security equipment. Financial archives. Nothing relevant to your wedding.”

“Then why was Preston inside?”

“I don’t know.”

Evelyn stepped closer.

“You’re lying.”

Graham’s shoulders lowered.

“Your marriage to Preston will stabilize the company. The Hawthornes control several accounts we cannot afford to lose.”

“I am not marrying a bank account.”

“No. You are marrying a man who understands our world.”

Evelyn thought of Sophie’s warning.

“After she signs, the girl won’t be our problem anymore.”

“What am I supposed to sign at the wedding?”

“The marriage certificate.”

“Nothing else?”

Graham glanced toward the locked drawer on the opposite side of his desk.

Evelyn followed his gaze.

“Open it.”

“No.”

“Then I will.”

She moved around the desk.

Graham reached the drawer first.

“Evelyn, stop.”

His fear was no longer subtle.

She held out her hand.

“Give me the key.”

For several seconds, neither of them moved.

Then Graham removed a brass key from his pocket and unlocked the drawer.

Inside was a silver folder identical to the one that would later appear on the bridal table.

The cover carried Evelyn’s full legal name.

She opened it.

The first pages contained the prenuptial agreement her attorney had reviewed. The language was familiar until she reached an appendix she had never seen.

Upon marriage, Evelyn’s voting authority in Vale International would be assigned to a joint marital trust.

Preston would be named temporary managing trustee.

A second clause concerned Sophie.

If Evelyn became unable to provide a stable family environment, temporary guardianship could be transferred to a court-approved relative or institution.

Evelyn looked at her father.

“What is this?”

“A draft.”

“It gives Preston control of my shares.”

“Only temporarily.”

“It creates a way to remove Sophie from my custody.”

Graham closed the folder.

“It will never be used.”

“Then why does it exist?”

He did not answer.

Evelyn took the folder from his hands.

At the bottom of the final page was a witness signature.

Celeste Vale.
