Chapter 14 - the accusation recorded from every angle

Evelyn deliberately turned toward the stage.

Sophie stood beside the flowers, exactly where the encrypted instructions had predicted.

Preston approached her with a smile.

From a distance, he appeared to adjust the ribbon on her jacket.

His hand slipped into the pocket.

Marcus watched from the security room.

Naomi watched from behind the stage.

Police watched from the hotel entrance.

Evelyn forced herself not to turn around.

Preston walked back toward the bridal table.

Several minutes later, he touched his pocket and pretended to be alarmed.

“My phone is missing.”

The officiant stopped speaking.

Preston searched the table.

“It was here a moment ago.”

Celeste stood near the stage, her face tense.

One of Preston’s relatives looked toward Sophie.

“The child was beside you earlier.”

Evelyn turned.

Preston crossed the ballroom.

“Sophie, did you take my phone?”

“No.”

“Empty your pockets.”

Sophie looked toward Evelyn.

“You will not search her,” Evelyn said.

“If she has nothing to hide, this will take five seconds.”

He reached for the denim jacket.

Sophie stepped backward.

Preston seized the pocket and pulled out the phone he had planted.

Guests gasped.

Sophie stared at it in horror.

“I didn’t put that there.”

Preston raised the device.

“She stole it.”

“I didn’t!”

He pointed at her.

“I found it in her jacket. She’s a thief.”

The accusation spread through the ballroom like fire.

Several guests whispered that the child had always been difficult. Others mentioned Nora’s disappearance and suggested instability ran in the family.

Sophie began to cry.

“Mommy, I didn’t steal his phone.”

Evelyn crossed the space between them and pulled her close.

“I know.”

Preston’s voice grew louder.

“This is exactly what I warned you about. She needs professional help.”

“She needs protection from you.”

“Do not make excuses for her again.”

He reached toward Sophie.

Evelyn blocked him.

“Do not touch my daughter.”

Preston lowered his voice so only those nearest could hear.

“Sign the papers, and I will make this disappear.”

There it was.

The final connection between the accusation and the fraudulent agreement.

Evelyn looked toward the security camera above the entrance.

“You planted it yourself.”

Preston laughed.

“That is desperate, even for you.”

“Then we should ask the camera.”

His face changed.

He followed her gaze and saw the blinking red light.

Outside, police sirens stopped.

The ballroom doors opened.

Marcus entered with the tablet.

The footage played in front of the guests.

Every movement was clear.

Preston crouching beside Sophie.

The phone entering the jacket.

The staged discovery.

A second camera also captured the moment Preston grabbed Sophie’s arm when she tried to move away. The contact was brief, but enough to explain the mild mark near her temple when she stumbled against Evelyn’s shoulder.

Preston backed away.

“This footage has been manipulated.”

Marcus opened the message history.

“The instructions came from someone inside the ballroom.”

Evelyn turned toward Celeste and Graham.

Then the warning appeared.

Do not let Evelyn see the footage from Room 17.

The officers moved toward Preston.

He suddenly laughed.

“You still think this is about the company?”

Evelyn held Sophie closer.

“What is it about?”

Preston looked at the child.

“Ask her what she remembers about the night her mother disappeared.”

Before anyone could respond, every screen in the ballroom turned black.

The chandeliers went dark.

And from the hotel speakers came three soft notes from Nora’s song.
