Chapter 15 - the guest who was never invited

Emergency lights illuminated the ballroom.
Guests moved toward the exits, but the doors locked automatically.
Marcus spoke into his radio.
“The security system has been overridden.”
“From where?” Evelyn asked.
He examined the tablet.
“Room 17.”
“That room is at the estate.”
“Someone connected it to the hotel network.”
Preston used the confusion to run toward the service corridor.
One officer caught him near the stage and forced him to the floor.
Celeste stood motionless beneath the emergency lights.
Graham stared at the black screens.
A voice came through the speakers.
It was electronically altered, neither male nor female.
“Preston Hawthorne has failed.”
Preston stopped resisting.
The voice continued.
“Celeste Vale has failed.”
Celeste covered her mouth.
“Graham Vale has failed.”
Graham whispered, “Northstar.”
The ballroom screens activated again.
This time, they did not display live footage.
They showed the west-wing corridor from six years earlier.
The date on the recording was the night Nora disappeared.
Nora stood in front of the concealed entrance to Room 17. She wore a dark coat and carried two folders.
Graham appeared behind her.
They argued without sound.
Nora pushed one folder into a hidden space behind the family photograph. She then looked directly toward the security camera.
A black car arrived outside.
The driver remained hidden.
Nora entered the vehicle willingly.
Graham ran after it moments later.
The footage ended.
Evelyn stared at the empty screen.
“She wasn’t forced into the car.”
Graham shook his head.
“I never saw that recording.”
The altered voice returned.
“Nora Vale did not disappear because of Graham’s fraud.”
Sophie lifted her face from Evelyn’s shoulder.
The speaker emitted the three musical notes again.
Then the voice changed.
For one brief sentence, it was no longer distorted.
“Little sparrow, it is time to come home.”
Sophie froze.
Evelyn felt the child’s heartbeat racing against her.
“You know that voice?” she whispered.
Sophie nodded slowly.
The main ballroom doors unlocked.
When the police opened them, the corridor outside was empty except for a white envelope resting on the carpet.
Evelyn picked it up.
Inside was an access card marked EAST WING and a recent photograph of the Vale estate.
A light was visible in a window that had been dark for six years.
On the back of the photograph, someone had written:
The wedding was only the test.
Bring Sophie before midnight if you want the truth about Nora.
Naomi stepped closer.
“This could be another trap.”
“It is another trap,” Marcus said.
Sophie touched the photograph.
“There’s someone in the window.”
Evelyn examined the image.
A woman stood behind the glass, but her face had been deliberately blurred.
Below her was another figure.
A child wearing the same flower-girl dress as Sophie.
Preston began laughing from the floor.
“You finally understand,” he said. “Northstar was never trying to steal your company.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“What do they want?”
He smiled through the bloodless fear in his face.
“They want to know which Sophie is real.”
Six hours later, Preston and Celeste were in police custody.
Graham had surrendered his company authority and provided investigators with the offshore account records. The fraudulent marriage documents were seized. The guardianship petition was withdrawn before a judge could review it.
Reporters gathered outside the hotel.
Inside, Sophie sat beside Evelyn while Marcus played the unedited ballroom recordings for the detectives.
The world would soon know the truth.
Sophie had stolen nothing.
Preston had framed her.
The marriage had never been completed.
Vale International remained under Evelyn’s control.
For the first time in years, the immediate danger had ended.
But the photograph from the envelope remained on the table.
At eleven thirty that night, Evelyn drove toward the Vale estate with Sophie, Naomi and Marcus.
Police vehicles followed at a distance.
The east wing was illuminated when they arrived.
The front gate opened before Marcus entered the security code.
No guards appeared.
No alarms sounded.
They crossed the garden and stopped outside the old service entrance.
The new lock was gone.
The door stood open.
A trail of small white flowers led through the dark corridor toward Room 17.
Sophie held Evelyn’s hand.
“Mommy, I’m scared.”
“So am I.”
“Are we still going?”
Evelyn looked at the child she had promised never to abandon.
“Yes. But we go together.”
They followed the flowers.
The concealed entrance opened as they approached.
Blue light spilled into the corridor.
The monitors inside Room 17 were no longer showing the estate.
Every screen displayed the same live image.
Evelyn and Sophie standing outside the door.
Marcus raised his flashlight.
Naomi whispered, “Someone is inside.”
Three notes from the music box echoed through the room.
Sophie stepped closer to Evelyn.
A chair slowly turned in front of the central monitor.
Someone was sitting in it.
The figure remained hidden beneath the darkness, but one pale hand rested on the arm of the chair.
Around its wrist was the silver bracelet Nora had been wearing on the day she disappeared.
Evelyn could not breathe.
“Nora?”
The figure did not answer.
Behind them, the door closed.
The monitors went black.
Then a familiar voice whispered from the darkness.
“You brought Sophie.”
A second child began humming Nora’s song somewhere behind the wall.

And the person in the chair said:
“Now we can finally discover which daughter Evelyn was supposed to save.”
