Chapter 6 - The Leak

The outage lasted twenty-three seconds.

By the time the cameras returned, Margaret was gone.

The suite door had never opened.

Adrian stood alone beside the window, shouting her name.

Cole’s team entered less than a minute later. They found an unlocked maintenance panel behind a bedroom mirror. A narrow service corridor connected the suite to a private elevator used during the hotel’s renovation.

Margaret had planned her escape before Adrian arrived.

On the table, she left one item.

A brass key with the number 417 engraved on its surface.

Adrian was taken to a secure interview room.

For the first time, he saw Evelyn not as his quiet wife but as the senior officer directing the investigation.

She entered in uniform.

His face changed when he noticed her rank.

“You followed me.”

“I documented you.”

“You knew Margaret was alive?”

“I learned five months after discovering you were stealing from me.”

Adrian looked toward Cole and the two federal investigators behind the glass.

“I want an attorney.”

“You may call one.”

“This is a military matter?”

“It became a national security matter when my credentials were used to access protected systems.”

“I never accessed military systems.”

“You submitted false deployment orders.”

“No.”

“Your attorney’s network did.”

“I didn’t know that.”

Evelyn placed copies of the fraudulent transfers in front of him.

“You knew about these.”

Adrian said nothing.

“You transferred three million dollars to an account under Margaret’s identity.”

“I thought it was a private investment account controlled by my mother.”

“You did not ask why it was registered to your dead sister?”

“Mother said the name was part of an old family structure.”

“And that explanation was enough?”

He looked at her with sudden anger.

“You hid your entire life from me.”

“I told you what my work allowed me to tell you.”

“You never told me you commanded investigators.”

“You never asked what I did. You asked how long I would be gone and whether the trust could fund your next project.”

His face tightened.

“That isn’t fair.”

Evelyn almost admired the sentence.

He had forged her signature, stolen millions, and helped his mother exploit a dead woman’s identity. Yet he still believed fairness was something he could demand.

She set the brass key on the table.

“What does 417 mean?”

“I don’t know.”

“Margaret expected us to find it.”

“I said I don’t know.”

Evelyn leaned forward.

“You have one useful opportunity, Adrian. Tell us everything Vivian planned.”

He stared at the key.

Then he spoke.

Vivian had promised him control of Grant Strategic Holdings after the divorce. She claimed Evelyn’s family trust contained a vulnerability: if Evelyn were accused of financial misconduct connected to her military service, an emergency clause could suspend her authority.

Vivian intended to trigger that clause using the account created under Evelyn’s credentials.

Once Evelyn’s access was suspended, Adrian would present forged marital agreements giving him temporary control of the assets.

“Mother said the investigation would end quietly,” Adrian said. “She said no one would want a public scandal involving a decorated officer.”

“And you believed she could manufacture evidence against me?”

“I believed the documents were already there.”

“Because you helped create them.”

He did not deny it.

Cole entered with new information.

The brass key belonged to a private storage facility beneath Grand Central Terminal.

Unit 417 had been rented twenty-two years earlier.

The customer name was Margaret Vale.

The rental fees had been paid automatically from a trust established by Evelyn’s grandfather.

Evelyn looked at Cole.

“My grandfather knew her?”

“Or someone wanted it to appear that way.”

Before they could leave, an alarm sounded inside the secure office.

Someone had attempted to access the Gray Ledger evidence archive.

The login credentials belonged to Major Nathan Cole.

Cole was standing beside Evelyn when the breach occurred.
