Chapter 14 - The Vault Beneath Bellamy House

Bellamy House had been built over a nineteenth-century bank.
Its public dining rooms occupied the upper floors. Beneath the wine cellar, behind walls omitted from modern building plans, the original bank vault remained intact.
Vivian entered through a private elevator reserved for senior club members.
Adrian walked beside her with two men behind him.
He was not restrained, but his expression showed he understood he was not free.
Evelyn, Cole, and a federal response team entered through the adjoining service tunnels. Rourke remained outside under armed supervision. Evelyn did not trust him enough to bring him into the vault, but she trusted his information enough to act.
That contradiction defined the entire night.
They reached the outer vault corridor at 11:46 p.m.
Cole’s team disabled two security cameras and intercepted the internal communications.
Vivian’s voice came through an earpiece.
“You have disappointed me, Adrian.”
“You forged the release order.”
“I rescued you.”
“You kidnapped me.”
“I prevented your wife from turning you into a witness.”
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“I already told her everything.”
“No, you told her what you knew. Fortunately, that was very little.”
A second voice spoke.
Male. Calm. Distorted electronically.
“Mrs. Vale, open the case.”
Vivian entered a combination on a leather courier case.
Adrian stood across the table.
Inside the case lay the ledger.
It was smaller than Evelyn expected. Dark leather. No title. Brass corners worn by decades of use.
Vivian opened it.
Rows of initials filled the pages beside account numbers, dates, and coded locations.
The distorted voice continued through a speaker.
“Remove the Grant pages.”
Vivian hesitated.
“You promised my family protection.”
“Your family became unreliable.”
“I preserved the network after Charles failed.”
“You preserved your lifestyle.”
Adrian watched his mother’s confidence collapse.
For the first time, Vivian was speaking to someone who treated her exactly as she had treated everyone else.
Disposable.
“Who are you?” Adrian asked.
The voice ignored him.
“Burn the Grant pages and leave the ledger.”
Vivian reached for a lighter.
Evelyn signaled the team.
Federal agents entered from both sides of the corridor.
“Step away from the table,” Evelyn ordered.
Vivian froze.
Adrian turned.
For one moment, relief crossed his face.
Then shame replaced it.
The two men behind him reached inside their jackets. Cole’s team disarmed them before they could act.
The speaker emitted a soft laugh.
“Colonel Grant,” the distorted voice said. “You always arrive one step after the truth.”
Evelyn approached the table.
“Who is the Custodian?”
“You already know.”
“Samuel Grant is dead.”
“Is that what you need to believe?”
The line disconnected.
Evelyn secured the ledger.
Vivian attempted to leave through the private elevator, but Cole blocked her path.
“It’s over,” Adrian said.
Vivian turned on him.
“You foolish, ungrateful child. Do you think she will forgive you because you look frightened?”
“No.”
“Then why help her?”
Adrian looked at Evelyn.
“Because you made me believe everyone existed to be used.”
Vivian’s expression twisted.
“I gave you everything.”
“You gave me excuses.”
Evelyn ordered Vivian arrested for fraud, conspiracy, identity theft, obstruction, and unauthorized access to protected systems. More charges would follow after the ledger was analyzed.
Vivian did not resist.
She simply smiled.
“You think this ledger belongs to Meridian?”
Evelyn looked down at it.
Vivian continued.
“It is a copy.”
Cole opened the final page.
A recent entry had been added in fresh ink.
EG authorized.
Evelyn Grant.
May you like
The entry was dated three days earlier.
It claimed Evelyn had accepted the position of Custodian.
