Chapter 5 - Margaret’s Warning

Adrian did not embrace his sister.

He did not call her name again.

He stood near the hotel door, staring as though she were an accusation given human form.

Margaret appeared thinner than the photograph attached to the bank account. Her face was pale, and her right hand trembled slightly as she reached for a glass of water.

“You knew I was alive?” she asked.

“No.”

“Then why have you been moving money through my identity?”

“I haven’t.”

Margaret laughed without humor.

“You always were a terrible liar.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“Mother told me you drowned.”

“Mother told everyone I drowned.”

“Where have you been?”

“Trying to stay alive.”

The surveillance room fell silent.

Evelyn watched Adrian’s face carefully. His shock appeared genuine. He knew about the account, the transfers, and the fraud, but he might not have known Margaret had survived.

That distinction did not make him innocent.

It only meant Vivian had deceived her own son as thoroughly as he had deceived Evelyn.

Margaret placed a folder on the table.

Inside were medical records, copies of passports, and photographs of Vivian visiting a private clinic in Switzerland.

“When I was seventeen, I discovered our father was moving money through companies he did not own,” Margaret said. “He used charities, trusts, and government subcontractors. I threatened to report him.”

Adrian’s expression tightened.

“Father died before the accident.”

“Yes. And Mother continued his work.”

“What does that have to do with the boat?”

“Everything.”

Margaret described the night of the storm.

Vivian had invited her to sail with a family associate. The weather worsened far faster than predicted. Margaret realized the emergency radio had been removed. The life jackets had been damaged. When the boat struck submerged debris, the associate abandoned her.

Margaret survived by reaching a navigation marker and clinging to it until a fishing crew found her at dawn.

The crew contacted local authorities.

Before Margaret could return home, a man claiming to represent the family arrived at the hospital. He warned her that Adrian would be harmed if she contradicted the official story.

“I was eighteen,” she said. “I believed him.”

“Why didn’t you contact me later?” Adrian demanded.

“I tried.”

“No, you didn’t.”

“I sent letters. Mother intercepted them. I called your school. She changed your number. Years later, when I finally reached you, a man answered and said you wanted nothing to do with me.”

Adrian’s anger weakened.

“When?”

“Your twenty-first birthday.”

Adrian looked away.

On that birthday, Vivian had given him his father’s watch and told him Margaret’s death had destroyed their family. He had spent the evening promising never to leave his mother alone.

Margaret pushed the folder toward him.

“Mother has used my identity for more than twenty years. The Swiss clinic helped keep me hidden while she controlled my documents.”

“Why would a clinic cooperate?”

“Because it isn’t only a clinic.”

She removed a photograph of a building surrounded by snow.

“The upper floors treat wealthy patients. The lower floors store records, identities, and financial access for people who need to disappear.”

Adrian sank into a chair.

Evelyn felt no sympathy.

He might have been deceived about Margaret, but he had still forged Evelyn’s signature, stolen foundation funds, and used her military credentials.

Margaret seemed to know that too.

“Your wife is investigating you,” she said.

Adrian’s head lifted sharply.

“What?”

“She came home early five months ago. The internal security system recorded everything.”

He stood.

“How do you know that?”

“Because someone inside her investigation contacted me.”

Evelyn turned toward Cole.

“Did anyone on your team contact her?”

“No.”

In the hotel suite, Margaret looked directly toward the concealed camera.

Not near it.

At it.

“Colonel Grant,” she said, “you need to stop watching and listen carefully.”

Cole moved toward the controls.

“How does she know?”

Margaret continued.

“There is a leak inside Gray Ledger.”

Then every surveillance screen went black.
