Chapter 5 - The Room Beneath the Water

Claire ran toward the ladder.
“Mia!”
The west-wing door would not open.
Richard and Daniel struck it with their shoulders while Mercer called his officers. His radio produced only static.
Victor stood near the hidden staircase.
“This house has a secondary security network.”
“Controlled by whom?” Claire demanded.
“Eleanor.”
“Then she locked us in.”
“Or someone using her access codes.”
Claire looked down at the red shoe.
It was wet, but Mia had crossed the terrace in the rain. That proved nothing.
The shoe had been placed where Claire would see it.
A lure.
Adrian’s warning returned to her.
Eleanor is not the prisoner.
Claire stepped toward the hidden stairs.
Mercer blocked her.
“That is exactly where whoever arranged this wants you to go.”
“My daughter may be down there.”
“Mia was with Mrs. Finch.”
“She was.”
Claire called Mrs. Finch.
No signal.
She called Mia’s tablet.
Nothing.
Daniel kicked the locked door again.
“This isn’t reinforced. Help me.”
Richard joined him. On the fourth strike, the old frame cracked. On the sixth, the door burst into the corridor.
Claire ran.
The hallway was empty.
They reached Thomas Ashcroft’s study less than a minute later.
The door stood open.
Mrs. Finch lay unconscious beside the desk.
Mia was gone.
Claire dropped to her knees.
Mrs. Finch was breathing. A bruise marked her temple.
On the desk, someone had positioned Mia’s second red shoe beside a tablet.
The screen displayed a live video.
Mia sat in a white room, still wearing her party dress. She did not appear injured. Her bare feet swung above the floor.
A distorted voice spoke through the tablet.
“Return to the pool.”
Claire leaned toward the camera.
“Let her go.”
“You brought Eleanor’s recording into the open. Now you will bring the rest.”
“What rest?”
“The file in the metal box.”
Claire looked at the flash drive in her hand.
Mercer reached for the tablet.
The voice continued.
“No police. No Victor. Claire comes alone.”
The screen went black.
Claire stood.
Richard moved in front of her.
“You cannot do what they say.”
“My daughter is seven.”
“That is why you need a plan.”
“My plan is to bring them what they want and take Mia home.”
Victor entered the study more slowly.
“They do not want the drive.”
“Then why ask for it?”
“They want you.”
Claire faced him.
“For what?”
He looked at the unconscious housekeeper.
“Your father created a legal mechanism before his death. A succession trigger.”
Daniel shook his head.
“I have reviewed every family trust. Claire has no controlling interest.”
“Not while Eleanor is alive and competent.”
Richard’s expression changed.
“And if she isn’t?”
Victor looked at Claire.
“If Eleanor is recorded committing an act that causes direct harm to a minor descendant, her voting shares transfer temporarily to the child’s legal guardian while the board investigates.”
Claire thought of the video.
Eleanor locking Mia outside.
Eleanor calling her a mistake.
Eleanor throwing the card into the puddle.
“My camera triggered the trust?”
“It may have.”
“Why would my father create such a specific condition?”
“He knew Eleanor’s cruelty would eventually outweigh her caution.”
Richard gripped the back of a chair.
“Who receives the shares?”
Victor nodded toward Claire.
“You do.”
The room became very quiet.
Claire finally understood why Eleanor had invited every relative except Mia.
She had wanted Claire to arrive.
She had wanted a confrontation.
She had even prepared the envelope.
“But if she knew about the trigger, why attack Mia on camera?”
“Perhaps she needed the shares transferred to you.”
“Why?”
Victor looked toward the old pool.
“Because there are decisions only the temporary controller can authorize.”
“What decisions?”
“The opening of sealed corporate records.”
Mercer’s radio crackled.
An officer’s broken voice came through.
“Chief, we found Mrs. Ashcroft.”
Claire turned.
“Where?”
“The family chapel.”
“Is she alive?”
“Yes, but she says Claire took the child.”
Claire stared at Mercer.
The chief’s eyes narrowed.
A second voice came through the radio.
“Chief, there’s more. We searched Claire Ashcroft’s car.”
Mercer raised the device.
“What did you find?”
“A syringe, rope, and a handwritten plan of the house.”
Claire looked at Victor.
“You planted them.”
“No.”
Richard stepped away from her.
“Claire?”
“You saw me arrive.”
“You had a bag.”
“It held Mia’s gift.”
Mercer drew his weapon.
“Claire, place the flash drive on the desk.”
“My daughter is being held beneath this house.”
“And we will find her.”
“You buried Adrian’s case.”
“I will not ask again.”
Claire looked at the tablet.
The screen flashed once.
A new message appeared.
MIDNIGHT.
AFTER THAT, MIA LEARNS WHAT HER MOTHER DID.
Claire checked the clock.
11:38 p.m.
Twenty-two minutes remained.
She raised both hands as though surrendering.
Then she threw the flash drive through the study window.

Everyone turned toward the breaking glass.
Claire ran.
