Chapter 1 - Twelve Years of Silence

Mia screamed when darkness swallowed the mansion.
A second later, emergency lights flashed red along the terrace. Guests shouted inside. A glass shattered. The violin music ended in the middle of a note.
Claire pulled Mia toward the car.
“Get in.”
“What happened?”
“I don’t know.”
“Was that Daddy?”
Claire’s hand stopped on the rear door.
Mia had heard the voice through the phone.
Claire forced herself to remain calm.
“We’ll talk when we’re safe.”
She helped Mia into the back seat, locked the doors, and hurried around to the driver’s side. Before she could start the engine, someone pounded against her window.
Daniel stood in the rain.
His tuxedo was soaked. His face looked pale beneath the driveway lights.
“Claire, wait.”
She lowered the window two inches.
“Move away from the car.”
“I didn’t know she was going to do that.”
“You watched.”
“I was shocked.”
“You watched her throw Mia’s card into the water.”
Daniel glanced toward the mansion.
“You need to come back inside.”
“Why?”
“Because the security system has locked every exterior door.”
Claire stared at him.
“You just came outside.”
“The terrace door closed behind me. I can’t get back in.”
“Then call the security company.”
“I tried. The phones are dead.”
Claire looked at Ashcroft House.
The emergency lights pulsed behind the windows like a heartbeat.
“Who shut off the power?”
Daniel stepped closer.
“That’s what I need to tell you.”
Before he could continue, headlights appeared at the end of the long driveway.
A black SUV accelerated toward them.
Daniel’s eyes widened.
“Go.”
Claire started the engine.
“Who is that?”
“I don’t know. Just go.”
The SUV blocked the main gate before Claire could reach it. Its headlights shone directly through her windshield.
Mia covered her eyes.
A man stepped from the passenger side.
He wore a dark coat and carried no umbrella.
Claire recognized him immediately.
Victor Hale had served as Eleanor’s private attorney for more than twenty years. He handled the family trusts, the company’s acquisitions, and every secret Eleanor needed buried.
Victor approached Claire’s vehicle and knocked gently on the glass.
“Ms. Ashcroft.”
Claire did not lower the window.
He held up both hands.
“I only want to speak with you.”
Daniel moved between Victor and the car.
“She’s leaving.”
Victor glanced at him.
“You should return to the house, Daniel.”
“The doors are locked.”
“I’m aware.”
“Did you do this?”
Victor ignored the question.
He looked at Claire.
“Your mother requests that you remain on the property until the electrical fault is resolved.”
Claire lifted her phone and began recording.
“Is she holding us here?”
Victor’s expression hardened.
“No one is holding you.”
“Then move your vehicle.”
“I cannot allow you to drive onto the public road during the storm.”
Daniel laughed nervously.
“You expect us to believe this is about the weather?”
Victor stepped closer to the window.
“There has been an incident.”
“What incident?” Claire asked.
“Someone accessed Ashcroft Industries’ private servers.”
Claire thought of Adrian.
“You believe it was me?”
“We do not know who was responsible.”
“Then call the police.”
“We prefer to handle sensitive family matters privately.”
“That sentence has ruined enough lives.”
Victor’s eyes flickered toward Mia.
He lowered his voice.
“Your daughter should not be involved in this.”
“My daughter became involved when Eleanor locked her outside.”
“Mrs. Ashcroft regrets that emotions became heated.”
Claire almost laughed.
“Move the SUV.”
Victor studied her face.
Then he stepped away.
For a moment, Claire thought he would obey.
Instead, he reached inside his coat.
Daniel lunged forward, but Victor only removed a large white envelope.
He slid it through the narrow opening in Claire’s window.
Her full legal name was written across the front.
CLAIRE ELIZABETH ASHCROFT.
The handwriting belonged to her father.
Claire had not seen it since his funeral.
She looked up sharply.
“Where did you get this?”
“Your mother instructed me to deliver it if you returned to Ashcroft House with a camera.”
Claire’s skin turned cold.
Eleanor had anticipated the recording.
Victor returned to the SUV.
“Read the letter before you make another decision.”
He climbed inside. The SUV reversed from the gate and disappeared into the rain.
Daniel stood motionless.
Claire tore open the envelope.
Inside was a single sheet of yellowed paper.
My dearest Claire,
If you are reading this, your mother has made the mistake I always feared she would make.
She has shown you who she truly is.
Do not confront her alone.
Do not trust Victor Hale.
And whatever she tells you, Adrian did not leave you.
At the bottom of the page was a line written in darker ink.
The truth is hidden where Mia first learned to swim.
Claire’s fingers tightened around the letter.
Mia leaned between the front seats.
“What does it say?”
Claire folded the page.
“It says Grandpa left us something.”
Daniel looked at the mansion.
“The old pool house.”
A violent crash echoed from inside Ashcroft House.
One of the ballroom windows shattered outward.
A woman stumbled onto the terrace, screaming.
“It’s Eleanor!”
Claire opened the car door.
Daniel grabbed her arm.
“Don’t.”
“What happened?”
May you like
The woman pointed toward the dark ballroom.
“Someone has taken her.”
