Chapter 15 - The Name Behind the Camera

The wind pushed the powerless boat toward the northern cliffs.

Adrian opened the engine compartment and found the fuel line sliced almost completely through. Someone had prepared the sabotage before they arrived.

Rose examined the shoreline.

“There is an old research station two miles east.”

“We will drift past it,” Daniel said.

“Not if we use the emergency oars.”

They found two wooden oars beneath the rear seats.

Adrian and Daniel began rowing while the storm carried them sideways.

Claire ended the call with Eleanor before the woman could offer another carefully incomplete explanation.

Evelyn sat close to Mia beneath a canvas cover.

The sisters spoke quietly.

They had known each other for less than fifteen minutes, yet Mia had already given Evelyn the least-damaged corner of the birthday frame.

Claire watched them and felt a grief unlike anything she had experienced.

Not only grief for the years she had lost.

Grief for how quickly children accepted love when adults stopped teaching them suspicion.

Adrian sat beside Claire after Daniel took over both oars.

“I should have found another way.”

“Yes.”

“I thought staying away protected you.”

“It protected Eleanor’s lie.”

“I know.”

“You do not earn forgiveness because you regret the result.”

“I know that too.”

Claire looked at him.

“Stop agreeing with me.”

A faint smile appeared.

“I remember you saying that before.”

“I remember believing you were dead.”

His smile vanished.

Across the lake, the research station emerged from the rain. It was a low concrete structure built into the cliff, almost invisible from the water.

Rose guided the boat toward a narrow dock.

The moment they climbed ashore, lights activated inside the building.

Claire stopped.

“Who controls this place?”

Rose shook her head.

“No one. It has been abandoned for years.”

The main door unlocked with an electronic click.

Mia whispered, “The camera person.”

A black lens above the entrance rotated toward them.

Claire took out her phone.

No signal appeared, but a notification opened by itself.

BRING ARCHIVE EIGHT INSIDE.

Adrian drew his weapon.

“We stay together.”

They entered.

The research station was not abandoned.

Fresh medical equipment filled the first laboratory. Refrigerated cabinets hummed along the walls. Computer monitors displayed genetic sequences.

On one screen appeared Evelyn’s name.

On another appeared Mia’s.

Claire covered both girls’ eyes and turned them away.

“What is this?” Daniel asked.

Adrian opened a cabinet.

Rows of blood samples stood inside.

Each tube carried a date.

Some were more than twenty years old.

Rose picked up one bearing Thomas Ashcroft’s name.

“He knew about this place.”

Mrs. Finch moved toward a desk covered in old files.

A photograph lay beneath a glass paperweight.

It showed Thomas and Samuel Vale standing outside the station.

Between them stood a young Eleanor.

Behind the three adults was Rose.

Claire lifted the photograph.

“You were all involved.”

Rose looked at it with sorrow.

“We began with a treatment for children no hospital could save. Samuel believed the research should remain public. Thomas wanted investors. Eleanor wanted ownership.”

“And you?”

“I wanted my brother to remain the man I believed he was.”

Evelyn approached the computer showing her name.

A green message appeared.

SUBJECT E-1 CONFIRMED ON SITE.

Then another line followed.

SUBJECT M-2 CONFIRMED ON SITE.

Claire pulled both girls back.

“We’re leaving.”

Every exterior door locked.

Metal shutters closed across the windows.

The distorted voice filled the station.

“At last.”

Claire looked toward the ceiling.

“Who are you?”

“You already heard my voice tonight.”

The distortion disappeared.

Claire recognized the woman immediately.

Celeste.

Richard’s wife.

Daniel stared upward.

“Celeste?”

A monitor activated.

Celeste appeared seated inside Ashcroft House. She still wore the green evening gown from the party. Behind her, the ballroom was empty.

A small cut marked her cheek.

Richard stood beside her with his hands bound to a chair.

Eleanor stood on the opposite side of the room, also restrained.

Victor lay unconscious on the floor.

Celeste smiled at the camera.

“Richard believed he designed tonight. Eleanor believed she manipulated him. Adrian believed he had protected Evelyn. Rose believed she had hidden her.”

Claire stepped closer to the screen.

“And what do you believe?”

“That the Ashcroft family spent thirty years fighting over research none of them understood.”

“Why did you take Mia?”

“To bring you underground.”

“You attacked Mrs. Finch.”

“I hired someone.”

“You found Evelyn.”

“I never lost her.”

Evelyn went still.

Claire looked at her.

Celeste continued.

“Helen Ward worked for my father. When she died, Evelyn became my responsibility.”

Rose raised the rifle toward the monitor.

“You never came near her.”

“I did not need to. I placed people around you.”

“The teachers,” Evelyn whispered.

Celeste smiled.

“The doctor. The music instructor. The neighbor who drove you to school.”

Evelyn’s face drained of color.

Her entire childhood had been observed.

Claire’s hand moved toward the archive chip.

Celeste noticed.

“Do not destroy it. Archive Eight contains only the legal evidence. The research is here.”

“What do you want?”

Celeste leaned forward.

“The treatment developed from Evelyn’s blood can halt cellular degeneration.”

Adrian looked around at the equipment.

“That research failed.”

“Samuel’s version failed because he tested only the first genetic line.”

Celeste’s eyes moved toward Mia.

“Mia carries the second line.”

Claire stepped in front of her youngest daughter.

“You are not touching either child.”

“I do not need to touch them.”

A mechanical lock engaged behind the laboratory walls.

Clear gas began flowing through ceiling vents.

Adrian fired at the control panel. Sparks flew, but the gas continued.

Mrs. Finch covered Mia’s mouth with her sleeve.

Daniel struck the door with an emergency axe.

Rose searched the cabinets.

Celeste remained calm on the monitor.

“The gas is harmless. It will make everyone sleep.”

Claire held the archive chip above a metal burner.

“Open the doors or I destroy it.”

Celeste laughed.

“You still think the chip matters.”

Richard lifted his head behind her.

His face was bruised.

“Claire,” he said, “don’t listen to her.”

Celeste struck him.

Eleanor shouted something from the other side of the ballroom, but the monitor muted her voice.

Claire looked at the burner.

The evidence on the chip could destroy Ashcroft Industries and expose decades of crimes.

It might also contain the identity of the secondary beneficiary, the failsafe Richard feared, and the last instructions left by Thomas.

Mia coughed.

Evelyn swayed.

Adrian caught her.

Claire lowered the chip toward the flame.

The laboratory lights turned red.

A new voice came through the station speakers.

Male.

Older.

Familiar.

“Claire, stop.”

She froze.

It was her father.

Not a recording from twelve years ago.

He spoke her name in response to what she was doing now.

Celeste’s smile vanished.

She turned toward someone outside the camera’s frame.

“That is impossible.”

The doors of the research station unlocked.

The gas stopped.

A hidden panel opened behind the main laboratory.

Beyond it stood a man with silver hair and a scar along his neck.

Thomas Ashcroft.

Claire’s father.

The man she had buried nine years earlier.

Mia stared at him.

“Grandpa?”

Thomas looked at Claire, then at Evelyn, then at the archive chip above the flame.

His eyes filled with an emotion Claire could not understand.

“Do not destroy it,” he said. “Archive Eight is the only thing keeping your real enemy alive.”

Claire slowly lowered her hand.

“Celeste?”

Thomas looked at the monitor.

“No.”

Celeste backed away from the camera.

Thomas stepped into the laboratory.

“The person behind Celeste is the same person who arranged Adrian’s disappearance, Evelyn’s false death, and my funeral.”

Claire’s voice became a whisper.

“Who?”

A door opened behind Celeste in the ballroom.

Someone entered, but the camera showed only a shadow crossing the floor.

Celeste stood quickly.

“You weren’t supposed to come here.”

The shadow stopped behind Eleanor.

A hand rested on Eleanor’s shoulder.

Eleanor’s face changed.

For the first time that night, she looked truly terrified.

The unknown person leaned close and whispered something into her ear.

The monitor lost its image.

Before the screen went black, Claire saw a ring on the stranger’s hand.

A silver ring engraved with a dolphin.

The same dolphin painted inside the old Ashcroft pool.

Thomas looked toward the locked archive chip.

“We have less than one hour before that person activates the final protocol.”

“What final protocol?” Adrian asked.

Thomas faced his family.

“The one that proves neither Evelyn nor Mia was the first child taken from Claire.”

Silence filled the laboratory.

Claire stared at him.

“There was another child?”

Thomas closed his eyes.

The screen behind him activated one final time.

A live camera showed a young boy sitting alone inside a white room.

He looked directly into the lens.

Around his neck hung Mia’s missing birthday card, now dry and carefully repaired.

The boy lifted it toward the camera.

On the inside, beneath Mia’s handwriting, someone had added a message.

CLAIRE, YOU HAVE TWO DAUGHTERS.

BUT ADRIAN HAS THREE CHILDREN.

The boy smiled.

Then he spoke a single word.

May you like

“Mother.”

The transmission ended.
