Chapter 7 - Vanessa Came Back With a Judge's Order)

Eleanor examined the document through the security camera feed.
"Don't open the door."
Vanessa stood outside in the rain.
She looked calmer than anyone had expected.
Richard stared at the court order.
"Is it real?"
"The filing appears real," Eleanor said. "The underlying claims are another question."
Vanessa had petitioned for emergency access to personal property she claimed Richard was unlawfully withholding.
She also alleged that Richard was mentally unstable.
Claire stared at Eleanor.
"Mentally unstable?"
"She says he's suffering grief-related cognitive decline."
Richard almost laughed.
"Convenient."
Eleanor continued.
"She attached a physician's letter."
Richard turned.
"What physician?"
Dr. Peter Kline.
Richard knew the name.
A private concierge doctor Martin had recommended the previous year.
Richard had seen him twice.
Routine physicals.
Nothing more.
Yet the letter stated Richard had shown confusion, paranoia, emotional instability, and poor judgment.
Claire's anger rose.
"They're trying to make him incompetent."
Eleanor nodded.
"If they can undermine his capacity, they can attack decisions he makes now."
Including ending the engagement.
Changing his lawyers.
Challenging the forged will.
Richard looked toward the door.
"Let her in."
Claire turned.
"No."
"Not alone."
Eleanor understood.
"If we allow supervised access only to documented personal property, we look reasonable."
Police were called to stand by.
Vanessa entered fifteen minutes later.
Her wet hair framed her face.
She looked at Claire.
Then toward the upstairs hallway.
"Where's Sophie?"
Claire moved instantly.
"Don't say her name."
Vanessa smiled.
"Still dramatic."
Richard stepped between them.
"You have thirty minutes."
Vanessa handed the order to Eleanor.
"I'll take longer if I need."
"No."
Vanessa laughed softly.
"I see your new attorney has made you brave."
Eleanor did not react.
Vanessa collected clothing from the guest suite she had used.
Every drawer was checked by an officer.
Every bag photographed.
Claire stayed downstairs with Sophie.
After twenty minutes, Vanessa descended carrying two suitcases.
She stopped beside Claire.
"You really think you won something."
Claire did not answer.
Vanessa leaned closer.
"Richard will eventually understand what you cost him."
"What did I cost him?"
"Everything."
Richard heard.
"What does that mean?"
Vanessa smiled.
"You'll find out."
She walked toward the door.
Then Sophie made a small sound.
Vanessa turned.
The baby's entire body tightened.
Claire felt it.
Sophie buried her face against Claire.
Every adult in the room noticed.
Vanessa looked irritated.
"It's a baby. She doesn't know anything."
Claire's voice was quiet.
"She knows you."
Vanessa left.
But the confrontation gave Eleanor something unexpected.
While Vanessa had been upstairs, the police officer's body camera recorded her entering the guest suite.
She walked directly to one dresser.
Opened the bottom drawer.
And froze.
Empty.
Eleanor noticed.
After Vanessa left, they searched the drawer.
Nothing.
Richard asked Thomas.
"Was anything removed?"
Thomas shook his head.
"No one has been in there."
Vanessa had expected something to be inside.
Claire remembered the flash drive hidden in her handbag lining.
"Another hiding place."
The dresser was antique.
Richard examined it.
One panel at the back of the drawer moved.
Inside was a narrow compartment.
Empty except for a scrap of paper.
A sequence of numbers.
Eleanor recognized the format.
Bank routing.
The account belonged to an offshore institution in the Cayman Islands.
Financial investigators followed the trail.
The account had received nearly four million dollars through layered transfers.
One sender was a company linked to Martin.
Another payment arrived two weeks after Michael's death.
Claire's stomach tightened.
"How much?"
"Eight hundred thousand."
"For what?"
Nobody knew.
The recipient account belonged to a corporation registered under a false director.
But one document listed an emergency contact.
Derek Cole.
Vanessa's older brother.
Police located him in Arizona.
Derek initially refused to speak.
Then investigators showed him financial records suggesting his name had been used in transactions that could expose him to serious criminal liability.
He changed his mind.
Derek claimed Vanessa had always been the manipulative one.
According to him, she met Martin almost ten years earlier.
They became partners in financial schemes.
Vanessa charmed targets.
Martin created legal structures.
Derek sometimes opened companies for them.
"What about Michael?" the detective asked.
Derek hesitated.
Claire watched the recorded interview later.
His eyes shifted.
"I don't know."
The detective slid over a photograph of the truck.
Derek's face changed.
"Where did you get that?"
"Do you recognize it?"
"No."
"Your sister received eight hundred thousand dollars two weeks after Michael Bennett died."
Derek leaned back.
For nearly a minute he said nothing.
Then he whispered, "I told her not to do it."
Claire's fingers turned cold.
Richard leaned toward the screen.
The detective asked, "Do what?"
Derek rubbed both hands over his face.
"She said Michael was going to ruin everything."
Claire stopped breathing.
"Did Vanessa kill him?"
"I don't know."
"Did Martin?"
"I don't know."
"What do you know?"
Derek looked toward the interview room camera.
"Martin said he knew someone who could scare Michael."
"What kind of scare?"
"A staged road incident."
Claire covered her mouth.
Richard became completely still.
Derek continued.
"He said nobody was supposed to die."
The room around Claire disappeared.
For twenty months she had tried to understand how a stranger in a stolen truck could destroy her family and vanish.
Maybe the stranger had never been random.
The detective pressed Derek.
"Who drove the truck?"
"I don't know."
"Who arranged it?"
"Martin."
"And Vanessa?"
Derek closed his eyes.
"She paid."
Richard stood and walked out of the room.
Claire followed him into the hallway.
He braced both hands against the wall.
For a long moment neither spoke.
Then Richard whispered, "She sat beside me at his funeral."
Claire could barely answer.
"I know."
"She held my arm while his coffin was lowered."
Claire had no words for that kind of betrayal.
Richard straightened.
His grief had changed.
It was no longer helpless.
It had direction.
"Where is she now?"
Eleanor answered from behind them.
"Vanessa checked into a hotel forty minutes away."
Richard turned.
"Police know?"
"Yes."
"Then why hasn't she been arrested?"
"Derek's statement needs corroboration. They're moving carefully."
Richard nodded.
He understood.
Evidence.
Not rage.
Truth.
Not revenge.
That night police obtained a warrant for Martin's office.
Inside a locked cabinet they found burner phones, false identity documents, trust drafts, and photographs of several wealthy people.
One photograph showed Richard.
Another showed Evelyn Hart's husband.
And one showed Claire walking out of Sophie's pediatrician's office.
The date was only three weeks earlier.

On the back, someone had written two words.
Problem mother.
