Chapter 4 - The Will Richard Never Signed)

The document looked perfect.

Richard's name appeared on every page.

His initials were beside every amendment.

Two witness signatures appeared near the end.

A notary stamp sat below them.

And on the final page was Richard Bennett's signature.

Except Richard had never signed it.

Eleanor arrived at the hospital with a printed copy in a sealed folder.

Claire was still holding Sophie when Richard opened it.

Under the forged will, Vanessa would receive the mansion, two investment properties, a substantial cash inheritance, and control over a portion of Richard's private holding company.

Claire and Sophie would receive far less than Richard had intended.

Worse, the document contained a clause that could remove Claire as trustee of Sophie's inheritance if she was judged financially irresponsible.

Richard turned toward Eleanor.

"Define financially irresponsible."

Eleanor looked at Claire.

"Large unexplained withdrawals. Fraud. Substance abuse. Criminal conduct. Abandonment."

Claire remembered Vanessa's comment in the living room.

The transfers.

She felt sick.

"She was going to frame me."

Eleanor nodded slowly.

"That is one possibility."

Richard leaned back in the hospital chair.

"Someone has been moving money in Claire's name."

Claire stared at him.

"What?"

His accountant had discovered irregular transfers three weeks earlier.

Not from Richard directly.

From an old family account that Michael had once used for household expenses.

The login credentials had remained active after his death.

Small amounts had been transferred into accounts opened under Claire's identity.

Then immediately moved elsewhere.

Each transfer looked like Claire was siphoning Bennett family money.

Claire whispered, "I didn't even know those accounts existed."

"I know."

"Does anyone else?"

"Now Eleanor does."

Claire looked toward Sophie.

The plan became horrifyingly clear.

Make Claire look unstable.

Make her appear dishonest.

Create records suggesting she was stealing.

If necessary, use Sophie's unexplained injuries against her.

Richard's voice turned cold.

"They were building a case to take my granddaughter away from her mother."

Eleanor nodded.

"And if Richard died after signing the forged will, Vanessa would control the house and much of the estate."

Claire looked at Eleanor.

"Why Sophie?"

Nobody answered.

That silence frightened her.

Richard folded the forged will.

"We find Martin."

Eleanor already had people looking.

His office claimed he had left early for a meeting.

His phone went directly to voicemail.

His assistant had not seen him since noon.

Richard called Thomas at the mansion.

"Is Vanessa still there?"

"She left twenty minutes ago."

Richard stood.

"What did she take?"

"One suitcase. Clothing. Jewelry. Her laptop."

"Did anyone photograph it?"

"Yes."

Richard looked at Eleanor.

"Can we stop her?"

"Not unless law enforcement decides there's enough cause."

"The flash drive."

"Helpful, but possession alone isn't enough."

Richard's jaw tightened.

Claire touched his arm.

"Sophie needs me tonight."

He looked at her.

That was enough.

Whatever investigation unfolded, Claire would not allow it to swallow the child at its center.

They returned to the mansion after the hospital discharged Sophie.

A child protection investigator arrived soon after, followed by a detective.

Claire gave another statement.

Richard turned over the flash drive, a copy of Michael's letter, and information about the security system.

He did not protect Vanessa.

That mattered to Claire.

Many wealthy families treated scandal like poison.

They buried it.

Paid people.

Silenced people.

Richard did the opposite.

He opened every door.

"Take what you need."

The detective asked about Michael.

Richard's face tightened.

"He died in a traffic accident."

"When?"

"Twenty months ago."

"Was anyone else involved?"

"A truck crossed into his lane."

"Driver?"

"Never found."

Claire looked up sharply.

She knew that.

But hearing it now felt different.

The driver of the truck had fled after the crash.

Police recovered the abandoned vehicle several miles away.

It had been stolen.

No arrest was ever made.

At the time, everyone called it tragic bad luck.

Now Michael's letter existed.

The detective asked for the original accident file.

Richard gave permission.

Later that evening, Claire put Sophie to sleep in a guest room beside Richard's bedroom.

She did not want to use the nursery.

Not until every camera and every room had been checked.

Richard sat downstairs with Eleanor.

Claire joined them after Sophie finally slept.

The recovered footage was waiting.

Eleanor hesitated.

"You do not have to watch this."

Claire looked at the laptop.

"I do."

The first clip was from six weeks earlier.

Vanessa stood beside Sophie's playpen.

Claire was not in the room.

Vanessa leaned down and spoke.

The camera had no audio.

Sophie began crying.

Vanessa picked up one of the baby's toys and threw it across the room.

The second clip showed Vanessa gripping the side of Sophie's stroller and shaking it harshly enough to frighten her.

Another showed Vanessa pulling Sophie's blanket away while the baby reached for it.

Another showed her deliberately moving a toy out of reach again and again while Sophie cried.

Nothing graphic.

Nothing that would leave obvious serious injury.

That almost made it worse.

It was calculated.

Cruel enough to terrify a baby.

Controlled enough to avoid obvious evidence.

Claire covered her mouth.

Richard stared at the screen.

The next recovered clip came from the nursery hallway.

Vanessa carried Sophie out of the nursery.

She looked directly at the camera.

Then covered it with a cloth.

The footage went black.

Claire whispered, "What happened after that?"

Eleanor shook her head.

"That section was deleted beyond recovery."

Claire stood abruptly.

"I can't watch anymore."

Richard closed the laptop.

Claire walked toward the staircase.

Then Eleanor spoke.

"There's one clip you need to see."

Claire stopped.

"It's not Vanessa hurting Sophie."

Claire turned.

Eleanor opened another file.

Three days earlier.

Richard's study.

At 11:18 p.m.

The door opened.

Martin Shaw entered.

He walked directly to Richard's computer.

Then Vanessa came in behind him.

Martin sat.

Vanessa leaned over his shoulder.

The two of them worked for eighteen minutes.

Before leaving, Martin opened Richard's desk drawer.

He removed something.

An envelope.

Richard leaned closer to the screen.

"What did he take?"

Eleanor zoomed in on a frozen frame.

The envelope had a handwritten label.

Michael.

Claire felt her skin go cold.

Richard went to the desk immediately.

He opened the lower drawer.

Empty.

For twenty months, he had kept one private item there.

A key recovered from Michael's wrecked car.

Police had returned it with Michael's belongings.

Nobody knew what it opened.

Now it was gone.

Claire stared at the empty drawer.

Vanessa and Martin had not merely been afraid of Michael's letter.

May you like

They were searching for something Michael had hidden before he died.

And now they had the key.
