THE CAMERA IN THE CORNER / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1 - The Camera That Saw Everything)

Vanessa Cole stopped smiling the moment Richard Bennett looked over her shoulder.

Only seconds earlier, she had been standing in the center of his mansion with her arms folded, her chin raised, and the same arrogant expression she had worn for months.

"You can't prove a damn thing."

Richard said nothing.

That silence frightened Claire more than shouting would have.

She stood beside the cream-colored sofa with eight-month-old Sophie pressed tightly against her chest. The baby was still whimpering, her small fingers twisted into the front of Claire's cardigan. A faint red mark showed along Sophie's arm where she had struck the hardwood floor.

Claire could feel her daughter's heartbeat racing against her own.

Richard slowly lifted his eyes.

Not toward Vanessa.

Above her.

Mounted near the ceiling in the corner of the living room was a small security camera.

Vanessa followed his gaze.

The color disappeared from her face.

For the first time since Claire had met her, Vanessa looked genuinely afraid.

Richard's voice was almost quiet.

"I don't need your confession."

Vanessa took one step backward.

Her eyes darted toward the hallway.

Then the front door.

Claire saw the calculation happen behind her expression.

Run.

Lie.

Destroy something.

Anything.

Richard moved before Vanessa did.

He did not touch her.

He simply stepped between her and the hallway.

"You stay exactly where you are."

Vanessa laughed, but there was no confidence left in it.

"Richard, don't be ridiculous."

Claire looked down at Sophie.

The baby had finally stopped crying loudly, but her tiny body still trembled.

Twenty minutes earlier Claire had believed she was living in one of the safest homes in Connecticut.

Now she understood that the danger had been sleeping beneath the same roof.

Richard reached into his jacket and removed his phone.

Vanessa's breathing changed.

"Who are you calling?"

Richard glanced at her.

"The person who installed those cameras."

Something flickered across Vanessa's face.

Not simply fear.

Recognition.

Richard noticed it too.

His thumb stopped above the screen.

"You know about the cameras."

Vanessa stared at him.

Claire felt the room turn colder.

Richard had installed the security system six years earlier after a burglary attempt. The cameras monitored the exterior doors, garage, library entrance, nursery hall, and several common rooms.

Vanessa had always claimed she hated them.

She said they made the mansion feel like a bank.

But Richard had never told her exactly what they recorded or where the files were stored.

Yet now she was staring at the camera as if she knew more than she should.

Richard lowered his phone.

"What did you do?"

Vanessa recovered just enough to scoff.

"Nothing."

"Then why are you afraid?"

"I'm not."

Richard looked at Claire.

"Take Sophie upstairs."

Claire tightened her arms around her daughter.

"No."

"Claire."

"I'm not leaving until I know what she did."

Vanessa's eyes flashed toward her.

"What I did?"

Claire took one step forward.

"You hit my child."

"She fell."

"I saw you."

"You walked in afterward."

Claire froze.

It was a tiny mistake.

But Richard heard it.

So did Claire.

Vanessa had just contradicted herself.

Claire's voice became very soft.

"You said you weren't there."

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Richard's phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

He looked at it.

Then his expression changed.

The man who normally seemed impossible to shake suddenly went completely still.

Claire felt dread spread through her stomach.

"What is it?"

Richard did not answer.

He tapped the screen.

A grainy thumbnail appeared.

Then another.

Then another.

Time stamps.

Different dates.

The living room.

The nursery hallway.

The kitchen.

Richard's thumb stopped moving.

His jaw tightened.

Claire stared at him.

"Richard?"

He raised his eyes toward Vanessa.

"What happened Monday at 2:14?"

Vanessa blinked.

"I have no idea."

Richard turned the phone so she could see it.

The thumbnail showed Vanessa standing beside Sophie's stroller.

The image was frozen before the moment that followed.

Vanessa's face changed again.

Richard swiped.

Tuesday.

10:31 a.m.

Vanessa near Sophie's high chair.

Wednesday.

4:07 p.m.

Vanessa in the nursery hallway while Claire was downstairs doing laundry.

Thursday.

11:46 a.m.

The living room.

Claire felt her legs weaken.

This had not happened once.

The slap she witnessed today had not been Vanessa losing control for one terrible second.

There were days of recordings.

Maybe weeks.

Richard called the security company.

"I want every recording from every interior camera for the last sixty days preserved immediately."

Vanessa moved.

Richard pointed toward her.

"Don't."

She stopped.

Claire looked at Sophie.

Suddenly all the little things from the previous month came back to her.

The unexplained crying.

Sophie's sudden terror whenever Vanessa entered the nursery.

The tiny bruise Claire had blamed on the edge of a toy basket.

The morning Sophie screamed when Claire tried to hand her to Vanessa.

Claire had thought it was separation anxiety.

She had apologized to Vanessa.

She had actually apologized.

A rage Claire had never known before began to burn beneath her ribs.

Vanessa backed toward the dining room.

"This is insane. You're treating me like some criminal because a baby is clumsy."

Richard's eyes hardened.

"An eight-month-old doesn't become terrified of one particular adult for no reason."

Vanessa looked toward the front door again.

Then she said something strange.

"You should be more worried about what Claire has been doing."

Claire stared at her.

"What?"

Vanessa smiled faintly.

It was desperation disguised as confidence.

"You really haven't told him?"

Richard turned toward Claire.

Claire's pulse quickened.

"Told him what?"

Vanessa's smile widened.

"About the money."

Silence.

Claire looked genuinely confused.

Richard saw it immediately.

Vanessa did not.

She continued.

"The transfers."

"What transfers?" Claire asked.

Vanessa's expression faltered.

Richard slowly lowered his phone.

"Vanessa."

She said nothing.

"What transfers?"

For several seconds nobody moved.

Then Richard's phone vibrated again.

This time the message came directly from the security company's owner.

Richard read it.

His face became unreadable.

"What?" Claire whispered.

Richard looked toward the study.

"The interior archive has been accessed repeatedly over the past six weeks."

Vanessa stared at him.

Richard continued.

"Someone has been deleting footage."

Claire felt the air leave her lungs.

Richard looked directly at his fiancée.

"And according to the access log, they used my password."

Vanessa's confidence collapsed.

Claire suddenly understood that whatever had happened to Sophie was only part of something larger.

Richard stepped closer to Vanessa.

"You had my password."

Vanessa shook her head.

"No."

"You watched me type it."

"No."

"You deleted recordings."

"I didn't."

Richard's voice remained frighteningly calm.

"Then we find out who did."

He called the security company's owner.

Claire listened as he requested restored backups, entry logs, device records, and every surviving clip.

Vanessa stood motionless.

But Claire noticed her right hand moving toward the side pocket of her dress.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Toward her phone.

Claire's eyes narrowed.

"Richard."

Vanessa suddenly spun and ran.

Not toward the front door.

Toward the staircase.

Richard moved after her.

Claire held Sophie tightly and followed several steps behind.

Vanessa reached the landing, tore open her handbag, and pulled out a small black object.

Not a phone.

A flash drive.

Richard stopped.

"What is that?"

Vanessa looked from him to Claire.

Her face was pale.

For a second, Claire believed she might surrender it.

May you like

Instead Vanessa turned toward the open upstairs fireplace.

And raised her hand.
