Chapter 15 - the call after midnight

Two weeks after the wedding, the Vale mansion no longer felt like the same house.
The west nursery remained open.
The locks were removed.
Adrian converted part of the library into an investigation room where authorized detectives could review copies of the recovered archive.
Families began receiving news that their records had been altered.
Some discovered missing relatives.
Others learned that the people they had trusted had purchased silence.
Adrian created an independent fund to help every affected family search for the truth.
Vale Holdings remained under his control.
The altered marriage agreement was invalidated.
The mansion and Lily’s protected inheritance were secured.
The central conspiracy built by Victor Marrow and the Cross family had finally been exposed.
For the first time in years, Ruth slept in her old room at the mansion.
She agreed to stay until Lily’s history was understood.
Margaret cooperated with investigators from a small apartment across the city.
Celeste remained in protective custody.
Her evidence led authorities to several members of the network, but not to the person who had removed the cathedral file.
Adrian did not visit her.
Lily asked about her once.
“Do you hate Celeste?” she said.
They were sitting beside Evelyn’s memorial stone.
Adrian considered the question.
“No.”
“Do you still love her?”
“I loved the person I believed she was.”
“Was any of it real?”
“Some of it may have been. But real feelings do not make harmful choices acceptable.”
Lily placed a white flower on Evelyn’s stone.
“Was Evelyn my real mother?”
Adrian put his arm around her.
“She was one of them.”
“How many mothers can someone have?”
“As many as truly cared for them.”
“Even if they made mistakes?”
“Especially then. But caring does not erase responsibility.”
Lily leaned against him.
“Will Claire come back?”
“I don’t know.”
“Will Elena?”
“I don’t know that either.”
“You don’t know very much.”
Adrian smiled.
“I know you are my daughter.”
“That’s one thing.”
“It’s the most important one.”
That night, rain began falling over the mansion.
Lily woke after midnight to the sound of the camcorder switching on.
It sat on the desk across from her bed.
She had removed the battery before going to sleep.
Yet the small screen glowed.
A video was playing.
Lily climbed out of bed and approached it.
The recording showed a dark room she had never seen.
A woman sat in front of the camera with her face hidden beneath a hood.
Behind her stood a wall covered with photographs.
Lily recognized Adrian.
Evelyn.
Celeste.
Margaret.
Ruth.
Some photographs had been taken recently.
One showed Lily entering the cathedral on the wedding day.
Another showed her and Adrian beside Evelyn’s memorial stone that afternoon.
The hooded woman lifted her head.
Only her eyes became visible.
Blue.
The woman spoke.
“Lily, the people around you believe the truth has been recovered.”
She placed a file on the table.
The label read:
CHILD 42
“They found the records they were meant to find,” the woman continued. “Julian protected one conspiracy. Victor served another. Neither man understood why you were placed inside the Vale family.”
Lily reached for the camcorder.
The screen changed.
A live image of her own bedroom appeared.
She saw herself standing beside the desk.
Someone was watching through the camcorder.
The woman’s voice continued.
“Do not wake Adrian. Do not call Ruth. And most importantly, do not trust the woman who claims to be Claire.”
A telephone rang downstairs.
Lily ran into the hallway.
Adrian emerged from his bedroom at the same moment.
“Did you hear that?” she asked.
He nodded.
They descended together.
The old telephone in the entrance hall continued ringing.
It had not worked in years.
Adrian lifted the receiver.
For several seconds, he heard only breathing.
Then a woman spoke.
“Adrian, listen carefully. You have less than twenty-four hours.”
“Who is this?”
“My name is Claire Arden.”
Lily gripped his hand.
Adrian activated the speaker.
Claire continued.
“The child you call Lily is in danger, but not for the reason you think.”
“Where are you?”
“I cannot tell you.”
“Are you her mother?”
A long silence followed.
Then Claire gave an answer neither Adrian nor Lily expected.
“I gave birth on April 8. But Lily was not the only baby born in that room.”
Adrian looked at his daughter.
“What are you saying?”
“I am saying the final file does not contain one child.”
The mansion lights went out.
The front doors unlocked by themselves.
Beyond the glass, a black car waited in the rain.
Its rear door opened.
A woman stepped onto the driveway wearing Evelyn’s red scarf.
Claire’s voice whispered through the telephone.
“Do not let her inside.”
The woman outside raised her face.
She looked exactly like the woman in Lily’s photograph.
Then someone knocked three times on the door.

And from the darkness behind Adrian, Ruth Bell whispered:
“That isn’t Claire.”
