THE CAMERA AT THE ALTAR / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11 - the mother accused

Adrian ordered the investigators to release Margaret’s arms before they had even touched her.

“This is absurd,” he said.

Celeste stood inside the cathedral chapel with two detectives at the door.

The abandoned ceremony could still be seen through the open entrance. White flowers surrounded an empty altar. Guests were escorted away beneath police supervision.

Celeste removed her veil.

“Ask her where she was when Evelyn’s car left the road.”

“At a hospital fundraiser,” Margaret replied.

“Your name was on the guest list. You never entered the ballroom.”

Margaret looked at Adrian.

“I was with your father.”

“Doing what?” Adrian asked.

“Trying to stop him from paying Victor Marrow.”

Celeste laughed once.

“My father was paid to disappear.”

“You were there?” Margaret asked.

“I was in his car.”

The room went silent.

Celeste faced Adrian.

“Victor drove Evelyn toward the cathedral. He was supposed to take her evidence and frighten her into silence. He did not intend to kill her.”

“You expect that to comfort me?”

“No.”

“What happened?”

“A second car struck them.”

“Who was driving?”

Celeste looked at Margaret.

“Her private security chief.”

Margaret stepped forward.

“My security chief was following Victor.”

“Why?”

“Because Victor had threatened Adrian.”

Celeste shook her head.

“He was following orders.”

“From whom?”

“You.”

Margaret’s face tightened.

Adrian moved between them.

“Enough. Where is Ruth?”

Celeste reached into the lining of her dress.

The detectives raised their weapons.

She slowly removed a folded map.

“The cathedral archive connects to an old service tunnel. It ends beneath the Vale mansion.”

Margaret took the map.

“This passage was sealed before Adrian was born.”

“Victor reopened it.”

“Why?”

“To move documents without entering through the main gate.”

Lily studied the map.

A symbol had been drawn beneath the west wing.

It matched the carving on Ruth’s brass key.

“Room forty-two,” she said.

Adrian looked at her.

“The nursery.”

“No,” Margaret whispered. “The room beneath it.”

They returned to the mansion under police escort.

Investigators searched the west nursery and found no entrance.

Lily placed the brass key against the wooden crib.

The number 42 matched a small carving near one of its legs.

She turned the carving.

A section of floor shifted.

A staircase appeared beneath the crib.

Adrian descended first, followed by Lily, Margaret, Celeste and the detectives.

The passage smelled of stone and damp earth.

At the bottom, they entered a hidden room filled with metal shelves.

Hundreds of boxes were labeled with children’s names and dates.

Some dated back more than thirty years.

Adrian opened the nearest box.

It contained a birth certificate, adoption papers and photographs of a baby being transferred between two families.

“This is what Claire discovered,” Margaret said.

“No,” Celeste replied. “This is only what they failed to destroy.”

A sound came from the tunnel.

Someone was breathing.

They followed it to a locked iron door.

Ruth Bell lay on the other side, tied to a chair but conscious.

Adrian forced the door open.

Lily ran toward her.

Ruth looked up.

“You found the room.”

“Who took you?” Adrian asked.

Ruth looked at Margaret.

Then at Celeste.

“Neither of them.”

“Who?”

Ruth’s eyes moved toward Julian, who had entered the tunnel behind the detectives.

He held a gun.

“My father spent his life protecting the Vale family,” Julian said. “I will not let an old woman and a child destroy everything he built.”
