Chapter 14 - the last file in the safe

The investigation continued for six days.
Julian Cross was charged with fraud, kidnapping, conspiracy and evidence destruction. Authorities froze dozens of accounts connected to his firm.
Celeste agreed to provide information in exchange for protection, though Adrian refused to speak with her.
Margaret resigned from every position connected to the Vale trust.
She moved out of the mansion voluntarily.
Before leaving, she gave Adrian the names of three retired security officers who had worked for his father.
“I thought silence protected you,” she said.
“It protected the people who hurt us.”
“I know that now.”
Adrian did not forgive her.
But he allowed Lily to say goodbye.
Lily hugged Margaret briefly at the front entrance.
“Will you come back?” she asked.
“When your father believes I should.”
“That might take a long time.”
“I deserve that.”
After Margaret’s car disappeared, Adrian returned to the hidden archive.
Investigators had removed most of the boxes, but one safe remained sealed behind the portrait of Thomas Vale.
The lock required two keys.
Ruth had one.
Celeste had surrendered the other.
Inside were Evelyn’s missing seven minutes of tape, Claire’s medical records and a letter addressed to Lily.
Adrian played the restored recording in the library.
Evelyn appeared again in the west nursery.
Young Celeste stood beside her.
Ruth locked the door.
A woman moved into view.
She had blue eyes, dark gold hair and a crescent-shaped scar near her eyebrow.
The woman in the photograph.
“Elena,” Ruth said in the present.
On the recording, Elena held baby Lily.
Evelyn asked, “Where is Claire?”
Elena answered, “Safe for now.”
“That is not an answer.”
“It is the only one I can give.”
“Is Lily Claire’s daughter?”
Elena looked toward the baby.
“Yes.”
“Then why do the hospital records list two patients under Claire’s name?”
Elena became silent.
Evelyn stepped closer.
“Who else gave birth that night?”
Before Elena could respond, someone struck the nursery door from outside.
Victor Marrow’s voice called from the corridor.
“Elena, open the door.”
Celeste began to cry.
Elena handed Lily to Evelyn.
“Take the baby through the tunnel.”
“What about you?”
“I will lead them away.”
“Where is Claire?”
Elena looked directly at the camera.
“If Claire survives, she will return for her daughter.”
The recording distorted.
A second woman entered through the hidden floor passage.
Her face remained outside the camera frame.
She wore a hospital bracelet.
Claire Arden.
Only her voice was recorded.
“No,” Claire said. “She can never return to me.”
Evelyn turned.
“Claire?”
“The people after us will follow Lily forever.”
“We can protect her.”
“You cannot protect her from a name she does not know she carries.”
“What name?”
Claire whispered something the damaged microphone failed to capture.
Then the camera fell sideways.
The final image showed two pairs of identical shoes running in opposite directions.
The tape ended.
Adrian opened Claire’s medical file.
The genetic report inside confirmed that Claire was related to Lily.
But the relationship field had been removed.
“She could be my mother,” Lily said.
“Yes,” Adrian answered.
“Or my aunt.”
“Yes.”
Ruth unfolded the letter addressed to Lily.
The handwriting belonged to Evelyn.
My dearest girl,
No document can decide who loved you. No hidden name can change the years we shared. I became your mother because Claire trusted me with your life, but I do not know whether she told me the entire truth.
When you are old enough, find the final file.
It is not in this house.
It is beneath the place where promises are made and broken.
The letter ended with a drawing of a bell.
“The cathedral,” Lily said.
Ruth nodded.
“The underground archive.”
Adrian immediately called the investigators.
They searched the cathedral tunnels until sunrise.
The archive room Celeste had described was empty.
Someone had arrived first.
In the center of the floor, they found a clean rectangle where a box had recently rested.
Beside it lay a fresh white rose.
Wrapped around the stem was a strip of paper.

The child has the camera.
Now bring her to me.
