Chapter 13 - THE ROOM BEHIND THE CLOCK

The Mercer house had twenty-three clocks.
Evelyn’s father collected them, and most had remained untouched since his death. Daniel, Vanessa, and Evelyn searched each room while the mechanical ticking echoed through the walls.
At midnight, they found the source in the old music room.
A tall grandfather clock stood beside the fireplace. Its hands had not moved in years, yet the mechanism behind the face was running.
Daniel opened the case.
A small metal disk turned behind the pendulum. Numbers had been engraved around its edge.
2, 14, 28, 50.
“Two fourteen,” Vanessa said. “Twenty-eight years. Fifty thousand.”
Evelyn touched the final number.
“The annual payment.”
Daniel rotated the disk until the numbers aligned.
A click sounded beneath the fireplace.
One stone moved outward.
Behind it was a narrow compartment containing a folded blueprint of the house.
A red line marked the secret corridor. It ended at a sealed space behind Evelyn’s bedroom bookshelf.
Daniel removed the shelving.
Behind the plaster, they found a steel door with a keyhole matching the brass key.
Inside was a hidden room no larger than a closet.
A film projector sat on a table.
Beside it were dozens of reels, financial files, and photographs.
The original film from the blue room remained threaded through the projector.
Jonathan had hidden the evidence inside the house before the crash.
“He knew someone would come for it,” Daniel said.
Vanessa examined the files.
“These records could destroy Marcus’s company.”
“And prove Helena’s involvement,” Evelyn added.
Daniel connected the projector.
The film flickered onto the wall.
The image showed the blue room twenty-eight years earlier.
Jonathan confronted Marcus with the ledgers.
Young Vanessa stood near the doorway. Evelyn held the metal case.
Then Helena entered.
Vanessa stepped closer to the screen.
Her mother looked nothing like the frightened woman from the bank. She was calm, controlled, and carrying a pistol.
Helena pointed it at Jonathan.
Marcus moved between them.
Even without sound, the argument was clear.
Helena demanded the case.
Jonathan refused.
Young Vanessa rushed toward her mother.
Helena struck her away.
Vanessa gasped beside Daniel.
“I don’t remember that.”
On the film, Marcus took the weapon from Helena.
For a moment, it appeared he was protecting Jonathan.
Then Evelyn ran from the room carrying the case.
Jonathan followed.
Marcus followed him.
Helena remained behind.
She approached the hidden camera.
She looked directly into the lens.
Then she smiled.
The film ended.
Daniel switched on the room’s light.
“Marcus was telling the truth about one thing,” he said. “He didn’t begin the attack.”
Vanessa stared at the blank wall.
“My mother did.”
Evelyn opened another file.
Inside was a handwritten agreement signed by Marcus and Helena.
It divided the stolen assets between them and described Jonathan as a permanent liability.
A later note, written in Helena’s hand, instructed Cole to maintain Jonathan’s sedation and ensure his memories were considered unreliable.
Daniel photographed every page and uploaded copies to three encrypted locations.
At 1:52 a.m., the house alarm sounded.
A bedroom window had opened upstairs.
Daniel ran toward the corridor.
Evelyn’s room was empty.
The hidden camera on the bookshelf had been turned toward the bed.
On the blanket lay the property-transfer folder.
At the bottom of the stairs, Vanessa shouted.
A shadow moved along the upper hallway.
Daniel followed it through the secret passage.
The person disappeared into the dark.
When he returned to Evelyn’s room, he found her sitting on the bed.
Vanessa stood over her, holding the folder.
For one terrible second, the scene looked exactly like betrayal.

Then Vanessa gripped Evelyn’s wrist and whispered, “Play along. Someone is watching.”
The clock changed to 2:08 a.m.
