Chapter 11 - THE FATHER BEHIND THE WINDOW
Daniel left the bank with the box’s contents secured inside a hard case.
Marcus had vanished before police arrived.
Helena left with him.
Vanessa tried to stop her mother, but Helena whispered something in her ear and walked away without looking back.
In the car, Daniel asked what she had said.
“She said Marcus is not the person we should fear most.”
“Who is?”
“She didn’t tell me.”
Evelyn held Jonathan’s recent photograph in both hands.
“He looks tired.”
“He is alive,” Daniel said.
“I know.”
“You knew he might be alive.”
“I hoped.”
“You paid for his care every year.”
“I paid to keep Marcus from moving him.”
“Why didn’t you visit?”
“Marcus said Jonathan became violent when he heard my name.”
Daniel looked at the recorder from the vault.
“Maybe this explains why.”
At the house, they listened together.
Jonathan’s voice was weaker than on the old tapes, but the recording was recent.
“My name is Jonathan Mercer. I am making this statement because my memory has returned.”
Evelyn gripped the table.
“The crash at Lake Marrow was not an accident. Evelyn was driving because I had been injured during the fight. Marcus followed us. He struck our vehicle twice on the lake road.”
Daniel looked at his mother.
Tears moved silently down her face.
The recording continued.
“Evelyn lost control near the bridge. The car entered the water. She escaped through the driver’s window. I was trapped.”
Jonathan coughed.
“Marcus pulled me out. Not to save me. To use me.”
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“He arranged the false death report. He kept me sedated. When I began remembering, Adrian Cole increased the medication.”
The recording paused.
Then Jonathan said something none of them expected.
“Vanessa is not responsible for what Marcus forced her to do. She tried to expose him more than once.”
Daniel looked at his wife.
She lowered her eyes.
“However, Vanessa does not know the final truth about her mother.”
Vanessa leaned toward the recorder.
“Helena Ward was not merely Marcus’s wife. She managed the accounts. She created the false identities. She signed the medical orders. Marcus used fear, but Helena designed the prison.”
The room became silent.
Daniel remembered Helena’s warning.
Marcus is not the person we should fear most.
Jonathan continued.
“If Helena has returned, she wants the film. Do not let her have it.”
They looked at the small reel from the vault.
“The film was recorded at the lake house by a camera Jonathan’s father installed in the blue room,” Evelyn said.
Daniel set it on the table.
“Then we watch it.”
The reel required equipment they did not have. Daniel contacted a film-restoration specialist and arranged a private transfer for the next morning.
Before they could leave, a police vehicle entered the driveway.
Detective Laura Bennett stepped out.
“We received a report that Evelyn Mercer has been financially exploited and held against her will.”
Daniel looked toward Vanessa.
“Who filed it?”
“Dr. Adrian Cole.”
Two more vehicles arrived.
Bennett showed them a court order authorizing Evelyn’s immediate removal for medical evaluation.
Evelyn backed away.
“I am not going with them.”
Daniel read the signature at the bottom of the order.
The judge had approved it less than an hour earlier.
Attached was a physician’s declaration stating that Evelyn suffered severe delusions and posed a danger to herself.
The declaration was signed by Dr. Cole.
The supporting witness statement was signed by Vanessa Mercer.
Daniel turned slowly toward his wife.
Vanessa stared at the signature.
“I didn’t sign that.”
Detective Bennett placed a hand near her restraints.
“Mrs. Mercer, you need to step away from Evelyn.”

As officers entered the house, the lights went out.
In the darkness, someone took the film reel from the table.
