THE CAMERA AT 2:14 A.M. / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12 - THE SIGNATURE THAT MOVED

The emergency lights came on twenty seconds later.

The film reel was gone.

Vanessa stood near the table with both hands visible. Daniel was beside Evelyn. The officers searched every room, but no intruder was found.

Detective Bennett examined the doors and windows.

“All exits were secured.”

“Someone was inside,” Daniel said.

“Or someone at this table took it.”

Vanessa faced her.

“Search me.”

Bennett did.

The reel was not there.

The court order still required Evelyn’s removal, but Dr. Singh intervened by phone and provided medical records contradicting Cole’s declaration. Bennett agreed to delay enforcement until a judge reviewed the conflict in the morning.

Before leaving, she examined the alleged witness statement bearing Vanessa’s signature.

“This was electronically filed.”

“I did not sign it,” Vanessa repeated.

Bennett pointed to a verification code.

“It was submitted from your personal account.”

Vanessa checked her phone.

The account had been accessed at 1:43 p.m., while they were at the bank.

“Marcus has my passwords.”

“Why?”

“He controlled everything when I was younger.”

“You are no longer younger.”

Vanessa had no answer.

After the police left, Daniel checked the house security records.

At the exact moment the lights failed, a hidden interior door had opened behind the library wall.

Daniel had lived in the house all his life and never known the passage existed.

The door led to a narrow corridor connecting the library, office, kitchen pantry, and Evelyn’s bedroom.

Dust covered most of the floor.

Fresh shoeprints did not.

Someone had used the passage repeatedly.

Near Evelyn’s room, Daniel found a listening device and several empty medication packets.

Vanessa leaned against the wall.

“Marcus could have entered whenever he wanted.”

“No,” Evelyn said.

They looked at her.

She touched the wall.

“My father built this passage. Only family knew.”

“Marcus knew the house,” Daniel said.

“But not this part.”

“Who else?”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Jonathan.”

“Anyone else?”

“Your grandfather. Me.”

“And Helena?” Vanessa asked.

Evelyn hesitated.

“She lived here for a summer.”

A sound came from the far end of the corridor.

Daniel followed it into the office.

His laptop screen was on.

A video call had opened automatically.

Adrian Cole appeared.

Behind him sat Jonathan Mercer.

Daniel moved closer.

“Dad?”

Jonathan lifted his head.

His eyes focused slowly on the screen.

“Daniel?”

It was the first time Daniel had heard his father say his name.

“Where are you?”

Jonathan looked toward someone outside the camera’s view.

“I don’t know.”

Cole stepped into frame.

“You have something we need.”

“The film was stolen.”

Cole smiled.

“No. The film you had was a copy.”

“Where is the original?”

“Inside the house.”

Daniel looked toward the secret passage.

“What do you want?”

“The brass key and every document from the bank.”

“In exchange for my father?”

“In exchange for the location of the original film.”

“You expect me to trust you?”

“No. I expect you to understand priorities.”

Jonathan leaned toward the camera.

“Daniel, don’t give him anything.”

Cole pulled him back.

Daniel’s hands closed into fists.

“Let him go.”

“There is one more thing you should know,” Cole said. “Vanessa never signed the statement against Evelyn.”

“I know.”

“Helena did.”

Vanessa stepped into view.

“My mother cannot access my verified account.”

“She created it.”

The call began to break apart.

Cole’s final words came through the distorted sound.

“At 2:14 tomorrow morning, the house will reveal where Jonathan hid the film.”

The screen went black.

Behind them, somewhere inside the walls, a mechanical clock began ticking.
