Chapter 4 - Lunch with the Cameras Watching)

Elena copied the flash drive before opening it. Six recordings traced Julian's demands, Chloe's humiliation, Thomas's refusal, and finally a thud followed by Julian ordering him to pick up the pen. In the last file Thomas whispered, "Lake Mercer is where they plan to finish it."
Elena formally disclosed the conflict to senior investigator Mara Reyes and asked to be screened from every decision. Mara made the boundary plain: Elena was now a witness, not an investigator, and she was never to enter the house alone again. The bank froze two pending transfers, but the deed and earlier payments required a court order to reverse.
"We need your father outside their influence," Mara said. "We need a current examination, and we need him to speak freely."
Sunday lunch became their opportunity.
Elena wore a charcoal sweater and the silver locket her mother had given her. A lawful recorder rested inside it.
Julian welcomed her with theatrical warmth. Chloe served roast chicken on Marianne's wedding china. Thomas sat at the head of the table in his wool coat. His hands trembled so badly that gravy spilled from his spoon.
"Dad, may I help?" Elena asked.
Chloe reached him first. Her fingers closed around his forearm.
"He needs to do things himself," she said.
Thomas winced.
Elena saw a yellow bruise beneath his cuff.
Conversation moved through safe subjects. Weather. A neighbor's new roof. Julian's plans to renovate the house. Every camera in the room watched from a different angle. Elena wondered whether Julian wanted evidence of normality or evidence he could edit.
"I brought the old photo album," she said. "Dad, would you like to look at it with me?"
"After lunch," Thomas said.
Julian sliced his meat. "Dad gets tired in the afternoon."
"Then now."
The knife stopped against the plate.
Chloe smiled. "Elena, must everything become a contest?"
Thomas dropped his fork.
"Bathroom," he said.
Julian started to stand, but Elena was already beside their father.
"I will help him."
"He prefers me," Julian said.
Thomas looked at Elena. "My daughter."
The words were quiet, yet they altered the room. Julian sat back.
Elena guided Thomas upstairs. She felt his weight lean heavily against her, but once they reached the hallway, his steps quickened. At the bathroom he pushed the door closed and locked it.
"Please," he whispered. "Do not let Julian know."
The next minutes unfolded exactly as Elena would remember them for years: the shower, the hidden papers, the coat falling to the tile, the terrible bruises, her father's answer.
Julian.
After Judge Thorne entered the interim order and police lights filled the window, Elena opened the bathroom door expecting rescue.
Instead, Julian accused her.
The first officer upstairs was Sergeant Dean Mercer, a broad man with tired eyes. He took one look at Elena and rested his hand near his cuffs.
"Ms. Vance, your brother reports that you entered the residence with a concealed recording device and attempted to coerce your father into changing his estate plan."
"There is an emergency protective order," Elena said.
"Dispatch advised us. I need everyone separated."
Chloe handed him the folder. Inside were printed messages that appeared to come from Elena's number.
Sign the house to me or I will have Julian charged.
Tell the judge you are afraid of them.
You owe me after choosing him all these years.
Elena read the pages and felt cold. The messages were false, but they looked convincing.
"Check the carrier records," she said. "Those were never sent from my device."
"We will verify everything," Mercer replied.
Thomas stepped forward. "My daughter did not write those."
Julian softened his face. "Dad, you showed me the messages yesterday. Remember? You were crying."
"No."
"You said Elena wanted the trust."
"No."
Julian reached for his arm. Thomas recoiled.
That movement changed the sergeant's attention. He saw the bruising below Thomas's collar. He told Julian to step back.
"Those came from a fall," Julian said.
"I did not fall," Thomas answered.
Mara Reyes arrived with an Adult Protective Services supervisor and a copy of the signed order. She read it aloud. Julian and Chloe were prohibited from contacting Thomas for seventy-two hours. Thomas was to be transported for an independent medical examination and placed in temporary protected housing of his choosing.
"He chooses his home," Julian said. "He stays here."
Mara looked at Thomas. "Mr. Vance, where do you want to go?"
Thomas studied the floor, then his son, then Elena.
"Anywhere he cannot lock from the outside."
Chloe's composure cracked.
"Ungrateful old man."
Her words were soft, but every officer heard them.
As Thomas left beside Elena, Julian did not follow. He stood beneath the family portrait with his hands in his pockets.
"The order expires in seventy-two hours," he called. "Then the court will see the medical report."
Elena looked back.
Julian's smile had returned.
"Ask Dad why Doctor Ames recorded his diagnosis six months before any of this happened."
May you like
In the ambulance, Thomas heard the question repeated. His face lost what little color remained.
"Because," he whispered, "Doctor Ames did not begin with Julian."
