Chapter 12 - Thomas Takes the Witness Stand)
Julian and Pike faced kidnapping, conspiracy, exploitation, assault, forgery, and theft charges. Chloe, Ames, and Kessler faced related counts. Prosecutors promised Thomas only that the evidence would be presented without hiding his imperfections.
"I do forget things," he said during preparation. "Will that help Julian?"
"His attorney will use it," the county prosecutor answered. "Tell the truth when you do not remember. Certainty you do not have is more dangerous than uncertainty you admit."
Julian refused a plea and portrayed himself as a desperate caregiver. Chloe and Ames agreed to testify, while Pike went to trial beside Julian.
The trial began eleven months after the bathroom door broke.
By then Thomas's ribs had healed. He lived independently with help on complex finances, and his cognitive evaluations remained stable.
Elena sat behind the prosecution table as a witness, not as a lawyer. Her suspension review had cleared her of coercion and theft, but the attorney general delayed her return until after testimony. She accepted the caution. She wanted no question that her father's case had been tried by evidence rather than influence.
Chloe testified for two days. When she described the assault, Julian smiled, and she stopped speaking.
"That is the expression he used before he hurt someone," she explained. She admitted her spending and cruelty, making the rest harder to dismiss.
Nora explained the hidden camera. The video played in silence so complete that Elena heard a juror inhale when Thomas struck the desk.
Doctor Ames admitted the false diagnosis and said Pike blackmailed him before Julian offered money. The judge kept speculation about Marianne's death outside the trial.
Then Thomas took the stand.
Julian looked at him for the first time.
Thomas described founding Vance Heritage with Marianne and raising Elena and Julian.
He admitted giving Julian authority because he loved and trusted him.
"When did that trust change?" the prosecutor asked.
"Trust did not change all at once. It was spent in small amounts. A lie about a loan. A missing statement. A door I could no longer open. By the time I understood the account was empty, I was afraid to say so."
He described the drugs, isolation, assaults, and coat. He had hidden the abuse out of shame after defending Julian for years. "I believed admitting fear would make me foolish. Instead, silence made me available."
On cross-examination, Julian's attorney asked about memory lapses. Thomas acknowledged them. The attorney played the edited clips of confusion and asked whether Thomas might also be confused about the abuse.
"No," Thomas said.
"How can you be certain?"
"Because forgetting where I placed a key is not the same as forgetting who pushed me into a desk."
The attorney asked whether Elena wanted the company or had threatened Thomas. He denied both and explained that her supposed threat involved hiring someone to clean his gutters.
Then the attorney made his mistake.
"Mr. Vance, is it possible you invented these claims because you regretted choosing Julian over Elena?"
Thomas looked at his son for a long moment.
"I did not choose Julian over Elena. I excused Julian at Elena's expense. There is a difference. One child asked me to see the truth. The other demanded that I prove love by closing my eyes."
Julian's smile vanished.
Elena testified last. She described the silent call, ceramic wing, documents, bathroom, and protective-order request. The defense accused her of using public office for private revenge.
"Did you identify yourself as an assistant attorney general when you called Judge Thorne?"
"Yes. Concealing my position would have been misleading. I also stated that I was not acting as counsel and requested immediate screening from the investigation."
"Did your title help you reach the judge?"
"The published emergency number reached the duty judge. My evidence obtained the order."
"You entered the house through a window."
"Yes."
"You stole a flash drive."
"My father directed me to evidence he created and asked me to protect it."
"You wanted your brother arrested."
Elena considered the question. "I wanted my father safe. When Julian chose to stand between those two outcomes, he chose the arrest."
The jury deliberated for four days while Thomas waited beside Elena, solving a crossword in ink.
In court, the foreperson stood.
Guilty of kidnapping.
Guilty of conspiracy.
Guilty of financial exploitation.
Guilty of aggravated assault.
Guilty on every major count against both Julian and Pike.
Thomas did not celebrate. He closed his eyes and released one slow breath.
Julian turned as deputies approached. "Dad," he said.
Thomas looked at him.
"Tell them this is not what you want."
It was the same demand in a different room: prove love by surrendering truth.
Thomas stood.
"This is not what I wanted," he said. "It is what you did."
The deputies led Julian away.

"Eleanor will take everything from you," he called. "Just like Marianne planned."
