Chapter 9 - The Girl With Kelsey’s Eyes

Briarwood Academy opened at 7:45 A.M.

Kelsey arrived at 7:12.

She wore civilian clothes.

No uniform.

No official vehicle.

Christopher parked across the street in an unmarked sedan.

Ryan remained in police custody under a newly approved assault charge while investigators sought federal warrants related to Halcyon.

The girl’s file listed a false name.

Emily Hart.

Age fifteen.

Guardian: Dr. Malcolm Vale.

Kelsey stared at the enrollment record.

“He’s raising her.”

Christopher nodded.

“Or controlling her.”

School administrators confirmed Emily had attended for three years.

Excellent grades.

Few friends.

No disciplinary issues.

Malcolm was listed as her uncle.

At 7:36, a dark sedan entered the parking lot.

Kelsey’s breathing stopped.

A girl stepped out.

Dark blond hair.

Blue-gray eyes.

Sixteen now, according to the birth date in the file.

She wore jeans, white sneakers, and a navy school jacket.

She looked nothing like Kelsey.

And exactly like her.

Not in the obvious ways.

Something in the way she scanned the parking lot before closing the car door.

Something in how she chose the route with the clearest view of both exits.

Something in the subtle pause before entering a crowd.

Threat assessment.

Unconscious.

Natural.

Kelsey felt tears burn behind her eyes.

Christopher said softly, “That’s her.”

“I know.”

The driver stepped out.

Malcolm Vale.

Kelsey opened the car door.

Christopher caught her arm.

“We agreed.”

“He has my daughter.”

“And if he’s armed?”

“I’ve arrested armed men before.”

“You’re not thinking like an investigator.”

Kelsey looked at him.

“No. I’m thinking like her mother.”

She crossed the street.

Malcolm saw her halfway across.

His expression did not change.

That frightened Kelsey more than panic would have.

Emily noticed him looking.

Then followed his gaze.

Her eyes found Kelsey.

She froze.

Neither moved.

Students passed between them.

Laughter.

Backpacks.

Morning traffic.

An ordinary school day.

Then Emily whispered something.

Malcolm answered.

Emily shook her head.

She began walking toward Kelsey.

Malcolm grabbed her arm.

Emily twisted instantly, broke his grip, and shoved him backward with a movement so practiced it could not have come from school sports.

Christopher exited the vehicle.

Malcolm saw him.

“Kelsey,” Malcolm called. “Don’t do this here.”

Kelsey stopped ten feet from Emily.

The girl stared.

“You’re real.”

Kelsey felt the words like a physical blow.

“Yes.”

Emily looked at Malcolm.

“You said she didn’t know.”

Malcolm’s face tightened.

“Emily.”

“You said she chose not to find me.”

Kelsey’s throat closed.

“That is not true.”

Emily looked back at her.

“You’re Kelsey Morgan.”

“Yes.”

“My biological mother.”

“Yes.”

Students nearby began staring.

Christopher approached.

“Let’s move somewhere private.”

Malcolm nodded quickly.

“Yes.”

Kelsey turned toward him.

“You’re not invited.”

Malcolm’s calm finally cracked.

“You have no idea what is happening.”

“I know enough.”

“No. You don’t.”

Emily stepped closer to Kelsey.

“Did you know I existed?”

“Not until yesterday.”

Emily studied her face.

Every microexpression.

Every hesitation.

As if trained to detect lies.

Apparently satisfied, she turned toward Malcolm.

“You lied.”

“I protected you.”

“From her?”

“From everyone.”

Kelsey said, “Including Halcyon?”

Malcolm went white.

Emily looked between them.

“What is Halcyon?”

Kelsey realized instantly.

“She doesn’t know.”

Malcolm shook his head.

“Not here.”

Christopher stepped toward him.

“Dr. Vale, I need you to come with us.”

Malcolm laughed nervously.

“You think local police can protect her?”

“From who?”

“Mercer.”

Kelsey said, “Mercer was photographed with her.”

“Because he found us.”

“When?”

“Three weeks ago.”

“You’ve been hiding her?”

“For seven years.”

“Why?”

Malcolm looked at Emily.

“Because Daniel asked me to.”

Kelsey stared.

“You knew my father was alive.”

“Yes.”

“Where is he?”

“I don’t know anymore.”

“Why should I believe anything you say?”

“Because I’m the reason Emily is still alive.”

Emily turned toward Kelsey.

“My name isn’t Emily.”

Malcolm closed his eyes.

Kelsey stared.

“What?”

“My real name.”

The girl reached beneath her shirt and pulled out a chain.

A military identification tag hung from it.

Kelsey recognized Daniel Morgan’s handwriting etched into the reverse side.

ELIZABETH KELSEY MORGAN.

Kelsey felt her knees weaken.

Elizabeth.

Her grandmother’s name.

Daniel’s mother.

“My father named you.”

The girl nodded.

“He called me Liz.”

Kelsey could barely speak.

“You knew him?”

“Since I was nine.”

Christopher’s head snapped toward Malcolm.

“That’s when the official records stopped.”

Malcolm nodded.

“Daniel extracted her from the program.”

Kelsey looked at Liz.

“Where is he now?”

Liz hesitated.

Then said something none of them expected.

“I thought he was with you.”

Kelsey stared.

“He disappeared two days ago.”

Malcolm whispered, “Liz.”

“No. I’m done.”

She looked at Kelsey.

“He said if he didn’t come home, I should find you.”

“Why?”

“Because someone inside Halcyon had located the archive.”

“What archive?”

Liz looked toward Malcolm.

He shook his head.

She ignored him.

“The original behavioral library.”

Kelsey remembered the ledger.

“Where?”

Liz lowered her voice.

“Under Fort Halstead.”

Kelsey’s blood turned cold.

Fort Halstead.

Her installation.

Her office.

Her entire career.

Built above the evidence her father had been trying to expose.

Then a crack echoed from a rooftop across the street.

Malcolm’s body jerked.

He fell.

Students screamed.

Kelsey grabbed Liz and pulled her behind a concrete planter.

Christopher drew his weapon.

Another shot struck the pavement.

Malcolm lay bleeding near the sedan.

Liz looked at him.

“Malcolm!”

Kelsey held her down.

“Stay here.”

“He’s been shot!”

“I know.”

The shooter fired again.

Christopher shouted coordinates into his radio.

Kelsey looked across the parking lot.

A figure disappeared behind a rooftop vent.

Then her phone buzzed.

One message.
