Chapter 15 - The Door That Opened by Itself

The gunfight lasted forty-three seconds.
It felt like an hour.
When emergency lights returned, two of Mercer’s men were wounded.
One of Cross’s soldiers was down.
Christopher had a graze along his left arm.
Daniel remained conscious.
Mercer was gone.
So was Cross.
Each had escaped through different maintenance corridors while the emergency shutters divided the level.
Kelsey reached the central console.
Most screens were dark.
One remained active.
NEW PATH DETECTED.
Daniel stared.
“I’ve never seen that.”
“You built it.”
“Not this version.”
“Can it still initiate Lantern?”
“I don’t know.”
“Can it kill people?”
“The purge instructions were distributed before shutdown.”
Kelsey’s relief disappeared.
“So witnesses are still in danger.”
“Yes.”
Her phone regained signal.
One message from Liz.
WE’RE SAFE.
Kelsey immediately called.
Liz answered.
“Mom?”
The word stopped Kelsey.
Not Kelsey.
Not Lieutenant Colonel.
Mom.
She closed her eyes.
“Are you okay?”
“Yes.”
“Nancy?”
“Here.”
“Where?”
Liz hesitated.
“Daniel’s friend got us out.”
“What friend?”
“Samuel.”
Kelsey looked at Daniel.
He nodded.
Samuel had anticipated Mercer.
“Stay with him.”
Liz said, “There’s a problem.”
“What?”
“The man who grabbed us said something before Samuel’s people took him down.”
“What?”
“He said Mercer wasn’t the one who ordered it.”
Kelsey looked toward the dark corridor.
“Who did?”
“He said the order came from Shepherd.”
The line went silent for a second.
“Liz?”
“I’m here.”
“What is Shepherd?”
“I don’t know.”
A new screen illuminated on the console.
Kelsey turned.
Subject 17 authentication accepted.
Subject 18 remote presence confirmed.
Daniel’s face changed.
“How does it know she’s on your call?”
Kelsey looked at the phone.
“It’s listening.”
Christopher swore.
Kelsey disconnected.
The screen changed again.
OPERATION SHEPHERD READY.
Daniel stepped backward.
“No.”
“What?”
“That protocol didn’t exist.”
“Cross mentioned Shepherd.”
“She knew?”
“Yes.”
Daniel stared at the screen with horror.
“That means Halcyon wrote a new branch after I disappeared.”
“Can it write its own protocols?”
“It can generate response models.”
“Apparently more than models.”
A door on the far side of Chamber C unlocked.
None of them had touched it.
Christopher raised his weapon.
“What’s behind there?”
Daniel shook his head.
“There is no room behind there.”
Kelsey looked at him.
“What?”
“I built this level. That wall should be solid.”
The door opened inward.
Cold white light spilled across the floor.
Beyond it stretched another corridor.
New construction.
Modern.
Not abandoned.
Active.
Kelsey walked forward.
Daniel caught her arm.
“No.”
She looked at him.
“You spent eleven years hiding.”
Pain crossed his face.
“I spent eleven years trying to keep you alive.”
“And now?”
“Now I’m trying to keep my granddaughter alive too.”
Kelsey gently removed his hand.
“Then stop asking me to walk away from the thing hunting us.”
Christopher reloaded.
“I assume we’re going in.”
Kelsey nodded.
They entered.
The hidden corridor led downward.
No signage.
No visible cameras.
At the end stood a single black door.
It opened before Kelsey reached it.
Inside was a control room far more advanced than the old archive.
Dozens of screens.
Live feeds.
Military facilities.
Corporate offices.
Courthouses.
Airports.
Newsrooms.
Private homes.
Thousands of people.
Halcyon had never died.
It had expanded.
Kelsey stepped toward the central display.
A map of the United States filled the screen.
Hundreds of glowing points.
Daniel whispered, “My God.”
Christopher stared.
“What are those?”
Kelsey already knew.
“Subjects.”
The screen zoomed automatically.
SUBJECT 17.
Kelsey.
SUBJECT 18.
Liz.
Then hundreds more.
19.
20.
21.
22.
The numbering continued.
Not nineteen subjects.
Thousands.
Daniel sat down slowly.
“This was never supposed to happen.”
Kelsey looked at him.
“You keep saying that.”
A folder opened by itself.
OPERATION SHEPHERD.
Kelsey selected it.
One sentence appeared.
WHEN PUBLIC TRUST FALLS BELOW RECOVERY THRESHOLD, ACTIVATE DESIGNATED TRUST ANCHOR.
Below it was a photograph.
Kelsey Morgan in full Army uniform.
Christopher turned toward her.
“You’re the trust anchor.”
Kelsey stared at her own face.
Her career.
Her reputation.
Every case.
Every promotion.
They had built her not merely to expose Halcyon.
They had built her to lead people after exposure.
For what purpose, she still did not know.
Another document opened.
SHEPHERD ACTIVATION WINDOW: 72 HOURS.
Kelsey’s stomach tightened.
“When did the countdown start?”
Daniel pointed.
The system displayed:
54:13:07 REMAINING.
Christopher looked at her.
“Less than fifty-five hours.”
“To what?”
No one answered.
Then a video feed opened.
Ryan.
He was no longer inside county detention.
Kelsey stared.
He stood in a dark room beside Elias Mercer.
Not restrained.
Not frightened.
Talking.
Christopher swore.
“He escaped?”
Kelsey watched.
There was no audio.
Mercer handed Ryan a file.
Ryan opened it.
His expression changed.
Then he looked directly toward a hidden camera.
As though he knew Kelsey was watching.
He held up the first page.
A photograph.
Kelsey could barely see it.
She enlarged the image.
A hospital delivery room.
2010.
A newborn infant.
Beside the baby stood a woman whose face was partially turned away.
The gestational carrier.
Kelsey zoomed again.
Daniel made a sound behind her.
“No.”
Kelsey turned.
He looked terrified.
“You know her.”
Daniel did not answer.
“Dad.”
He slowly sat.
“That woman was never supposed to be involved.”
“Who is she?”
Before he could respond, the screen changed.
A live camera activated.
The same woman appeared.
Sixteen years older.
Alive.
Sitting at a table in an unknown location.
She looked directly into the camera.
Then she spoke.
“Kelsey, if you’re seeing this, Daniel finally failed to keep you away from Shepherd.”
Kelsey stared.
The woman smiled.
“You probably think Elizabeth was the first child created from your genetic material.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Kelsey stopped breathing.
The woman continued.
“She wasn’t.”
Christopher whispered, “What the hell?”
A door opened behind the woman.
Someone stepped into frame.
Young.
Male.
Approximately eighteen years old.
He had Daniel Morgan’s eyes.
And Kelsey’s face.
The woman placed a hand on his shoulder.
“This is Subject 16.”
Kelsey looked sharply at Daniel.
“That number was yours.”
Daniel could not meet her eyes.
The screen flickered.
The young man leaned toward the camera.
He spoke calmly.
“I’ve been waiting for you, Mother.”
The feed went black.
Then every monitor in the hidden control room displayed the same message.
SHEPHERD HAS IDENTIFIED THE FAMILY.
PHASE 2 BEGINS IN 54 HOURS.
Kelsey stood motionless.
Somewhere above them, alarms began sounding throughout Fort Halstead.
Christopher looked toward the corridor.
Daniel whispered, “We need to leave.”
Kelsey did not move.
She stared at the countdown.
54:12:41.
54:12:40.
54:12:39.
For eleven years she had believed her father was dead.
For nine years she had believed her husband had chosen her.
For one day she had believed Liz was the deepest secret Halcyon had stolen from her.
Now she understood something far more terrifying.
Subject 18 had never been the end of the experiment.
Perhaps Kelsey had never even been its center.
She turned toward Daniel.
“You’re going to tell me who that woman is.”
Daniel’s face had gone gray.
“I can’t.”
Kelsey stepped closer.
“You can.”
“If I tell you, you’ll go after her.”
“Yes.”
“That’s exactly what Shepherd wants.”
Kelsey stared at him.
“Then Shepherd should have learned more from Subject 17.”
Daniel looked at her.
Kelsey picked up her father’s blue ledger.
She placed it beneath her arm.
Then she looked once more at the black screen where the young man had called her Mother.
“Because I’m done making the choices it expects.”
Behind them, somewhere deep inside the newly discovered level, a heavy mechanical lock disengaged.
One.
Then another.
Then another.
Christopher turned toward the sound.
“What is opening?”
Daniel’s expression filled with fear.
“I don’t know.”
A final lock released.
At the far end of the chamber, a steel door slowly opened.
Beyond it was complete darkness.
Then a young man’s voice echoed from inside.
Not through speakers.
Not through a recording.
Real.
Close.
“Mom?”
Kelsey froze.
The voice came again.
May you like
“I knew you’d find the door.”
And before anyone could move, every light in the facility went out.
