Chapter 7 - Everything Olivia Brought)

Olivia arrived in Claire's room eleven minutes after the call.

This time hospital security escorted her.

Not to keep her out.

To keep everyone else back.

Richard stood near the window.

Margaret sat motionless in a chair.

Daniel remained beside the far wall under the watch of a security officer.

Rachel had untied Claire's ankle.

The dark restraint strap was sealed again.

The white bridal garment bag lay across the visitor sofa.

The forged marriage application rested on Claire's blanket.

Olivia entered.

Her gaze moved across the room once.

Then stopped on the garment bag.

"I see I underestimated them."

Claire almost smiled.

"Only slightly."

Olivia placed the accordion folder on the bedside table.

Richard stepped forward.

"This is a private family matter."

Olivia did not look at him.

"No, Richard. It stopped being private when forged legal documents entered a hospital room."

"I suggest you choose your words carefully."

Olivia finally turned.

"I have."

The confidence in her voice made Daniel visibly uneasy.

Claire held up the marriage application.

"Is this real?"

Olivia took it.

She examined the document.

"The form is real."

"My signature isn't."

"I know."

"How?"

Olivia reached into her folder.

She pulled out another page.

"Because this isn't the first document they used it on."

Claire stared.

It was an authorization transferring limited voting power over her Bennett Meridian shares.

Her signature appeared at the bottom.

Dated four days earlier.

Claire had never seen it.

Margaret stood.

"Richard?"

Richard remained silent.

Olivia produced another.

Consent to mediation in the marital separation.

Another forged signature.

Then another.

A private medical release.

And another.

A preliminary property settlement giving Daniel broad access to marital accounts.

Claire felt strangely calm.

There were too many betrayals now for shock.

They had become evidence.

Olivia opened her laptop.

"I've already sent copies to outside counsel, the independent directors of Bennett Meridian and the lender's fraud department."

Richard's face changed.

Margaret whispered, "You did what?"

Richard stepped toward Olivia.

"You have no authority."

"I represent Claire."

"You are interfering with a corporate restructuring."

Olivia gave him a tired look.

"Richard, seventy four million dollars did not restructure itself into accounts you control."

Margaret stared at her husband.

"How much did you take?"

Richard did not answer.

Olivia continued.

"Some of it covered operating losses. Some repaid private obligations. Almost fourteen million appears to have been used to support a personal real estate investment you never disclosed to the board."

Margaret sat down slowly.

Claire looked at her mother.

For the first time, Margaret did not look cold.

She looked betrayed.

Claire did not feel sorry for her.

Not yet.

Olivia turned the laptop toward Claire.

"There is more."

The screen showed a scanned contract between Langley Capital and an entity called Meridian Stabilization Partners.

Victor Langley's signature appeared at the bottom.

So did Richard's.

"Victor knew?"

Olivia nodded.

"He knew the company was near default. He also knew your father could not complete the financing transaction without either your vote or effective control over your shares."

Claire looked at the marriage application.

"So he decided to marry the problem."

"Essentially."

Daniel muttered, "That's not what happened."

Olivia turned toward him.

"Would you like me to explain what happened to the nine point four million dollars?"

He went silent.

Claire looked at Olivia.

"Explain it."

Olivia opened another document.

"Daniel signed a consulting agreement with one of Langley's affiliates."

"For what consulting?"

"Strategic family transition."

Claire laughed once.

Of course.

Olivia continued.

"Seven million was payable once you signed the separation agreement. Another two point four million was payable if the company transaction closed."

Daniel looked toward Richard.

Richard looked furious.

Claire understood something.

"Dad didn't know."

Olivia nodded.

"Not about the Langley affiliate payment."

Richard turned on Daniel.

"You told me the money came from your partnership."

Daniel snapped.

"You were paying me to disappear anyway."

Margaret covered her mouth.

Claire stared at Daniel.

"Say that again."

He realized the recorder was still on.

Rachel had never turned it off.

Daniel's face changed.

Claire smiled without warmth.

"Go ahead."

He said nothing.

Richard looked toward the glowing red light.

Then at Rachel.

"Turn that off."

Rachel shook her head.

"No."

"You are recording a privileged family discussion."

"This room recording was activated for patient safety after suspected coercion."

Richard's voice rose.

"I am on the hospital foundation."

Rachel held his gaze.

"And she is still the patient."

The security officer near Daniel shifted slightly.

Richard stopped.

Claire looked at Olivia.

"Is there enough?"

"Enough for what?"

"To stop the company deal."

"Yes."

"To protect my shares."

"Yes."

"To stop them from speaking for me."

Olivia looked at the hospital chart.

"Dr. Foster's capacity assessment already does that."

Claire exhaled.

Then asked the question she had been avoiding.

"And my baby?"

Daniel looked at her.

Olivia's expression softened.

"We need to discuss that."

Claire's heart tightened.

"What did he sign?"

Olivia removed a final agreement from the folder.

"This document was drafted by Daniel's attorney but never filed. It proposed that, after your divorce, Daniel would receive primary decision making authority over the child for the first eighteen months."

Claire stared at him.

Daniel lifted both hands.

"It was a negotiating position."

"With whom?"

Silence.

Claire's voice broke for the first time.

"With whom, Daniel?"

Olivia answered.

"Victor Langley's attorneys."

The room became completely still.

Even Richard looked shocked.

Claire whispered, "Why would Victor care about custody?"

Olivia scrolled through the agreement.

"Because his financing proposal included a private family trust."

Claire did not understand.

Olivia continued.

"The trust would have held certain Bennett Meridian shares after the marriage."

Claire felt dread rising.

"The baby."

"Your child would have been named contingent beneficiary."

Daniel interrupted.

"It's financial planning."

Claire stared at him.

"Before the child is born."

"Families create trusts all the time."

"With a man I never agreed to marry."

Daniel said nothing.

Olivia looked at Claire carefully.

"There is another clause."

Claire closed her eyes.

"Of course there is."

"If you became medically incapacitated, temporarily or permanently, Victor would have received certain management rights over trust assets."

Claire opened her eyes.

The psychiatric evaluation.

The false medical notes.

The attempts to establish she was unstable.

The private hospital.

The restraint.

It all connected.

Not perfectly.

Not elegantly.

But enough.

Claire looked at Richard.

"Did you know about that?"

He looked genuinely stunned.

"No."

Victor Langley had not only been planning to exploit Claire.

He had been planning to exploit Richard too.

Claire almost smiled.

The predators had been cheating each other.

Her phone vibrated.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

Claire opened it.

One sentence.

YOUR FATHER IS NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO MOVED THE MONEY.

Then another message arrived.

Attached was a photograph.

Victor Langley entering the hospital that morning.

The time stamp was twenty minutes earlier.

Claire looked toward the hallway.

"Where is Victor now?"

Rachel stepped outside.

The consultation room down the corridor was empty.

So was the notary.

Victor Langley had disappeared.

But on the table he had left behind one folder.

Inside it was a document bearing Claire's forged signature.

A document that suggested the scheme had begun almost a year earlier.

Before Claire became pregnant.

Before Daniel asked for a divorce.

Before anyone knew Bennett Meridian was in crisis.

Claire stared at the date.

Then at Daniel.

"How long have you been planning this?"

Daniel looked at Richard.

May you like

Richard looked at Margaret.

And nobody answered.
