Chapter 6 - The Wedding Scheduled Without the Bride)

Olivia Grant entered St. Catherine's through the emergency department at 10:12 a.m.

She did not use the main lobby.

She did not call ahead.

She carried one laptop, two encrypted drives and a brown accordion folder containing enough paper to end Richard Bennett's career.

But she never reached Claire's room.

At 10:19, hospital security stopped her near the elevators.

A guard informed her that Claire Bennett was not accepting visitors.

Olivia stared at him.

"Claire called me."

"Family only."

"I'm her attorney."

The guard checked his tablet.

"There's no authorization."

"Who removed it?"

"I don't know."

Olivia did.

She stepped away and called Claire's phone.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

A third time.

This time the call connected for half a second.

Then ended.

Olivia frowned.

Someone had touched the phone.

Inside the private room, Margaret looked down at Claire's vibrating smartphone hidden in her handbag.

She pressed decline.

Then zipped the bag.

Claire was watching her.

"What was that?"

Margaret did not blink.

"My phone."

Claire said nothing.

Daniel stood near the window.

Richard remained outside.

The white bridal garment bag had not arrived yet.

But the legal paperwork had.

A notary sat in the family consultation room down the hall.

So did Victor Langley.

Claire did not know either of those facts.

Rachel did.

She had returned from the nurses' station carrying medication when she noticed three men entering the consultation room.

Richard.

Victor.

A notary Rachel recognized from previous hospital paperwork.

One of the men carried a folder marked MARRIAGE LICENSE.

Rachel stopped walking.

A hospital was supposed to be a place where people were vulnerable without being exploited.

Whatever was happening around Claire's room no longer resembled family concern.

Rachel returned to the nurses' station.

She called hospital legal.

Then she called the nursing supervisor.

Then she documented everything.

At 10:27, Richard finally entered Claire's room.

"How are you feeling?"

Claire stared at him.

"Better before you walked in."

Margaret sighed.

Richard ignored the insult.

"We need to resolve this."

"No."

"You don't know what I'm asking."

"That has never stopped you from assuming my answer."

Daniel crossed his arms.

Richard took the chair beside the bed.

He looked older than he had the previous evening.

Not weak.

Cornered.

"The company is facing a temporary financing issue."

"Seventy four million dollars is temporary?"

Margaret turned toward him.

"What is she talking about?"

Richard's eyes narrowed.

Claire smiled.

"You should tell Mom."

"This is not the time."

"It's exactly the time."

Margaret stepped forward.

"Richard?"

He did not look at her.

Claire continued.

"Olivia found the transfers."

Richard's jaw tightened.

"Olivia found partial information."

"Did you move company money into shell corporations?"

"No."

"Did Daniel receive nine point four million dollars?"

Daniel looked at Richard.

That was answer enough.

Margaret stared at her husband.

"Richard."

He finally turned.

"We were restructuring liabilities."

Margaret's face went cold.

"You told me the liquidity issue came from the failed distribution expansion."

"It did."

"You said nothing about transfers."

"Because you didn't need to know."

Claire almost admired the symmetry.

Richard was doing to Margaret what Margaret had always done to Claire.

Deciding which truths she needed.

Richard turned back to Claire.

"Victor can stabilize the company."

"I don't care."

"You should."

"My shares do not exist to rescue you from your crimes."

Daniel snapped.

"Stop calling it a crime."

Claire looked at him.

"You took the money."

"I invested it."

"From my father."

"It was compensation."

"For divorcing me?"

Silence.

Margaret looked away.

Richard spoke carefully.

"For cooperating with a broader solution."

Claire's eyes burned.

"Say it."

Richard's expression hardened.

"You and Daniel are not suited to one another."

Daniel stared at the floor.

"And Victor is?"

"Victor understands responsibility."

"Victor is older than you were when I was born."

"That is irrelevant."

"I'm carrying Daniel's child."

Daniel winced.

Richard did not.

"The child will be cared for."

Claire stared at her father.

Something fundamental inside her stopped hoping he might eventually remember he was her father.

She whispered, "You already planned the ceremony."

Richard said nothing.

Margaret spoke.

"It would be private."

Claire looked at her.

"Today?"

Margaret's lips pressed together.

Claire laughed in disbelief.

"Today."

Richard leaned forward.

"Only if you agreed."

"You brought a notary."

His face changed.

Tiny.

But Claire saw it.

"You brought Victor here."

No response.

"You brought a marriage license into a hospital where you're trying to have me declared incompetent."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Nobody is forcing you."

Claire pointed at the dark fabric strap Rachel had left sealed inside an evidence bag near the counter.

"Then what is that?"

Daniel's face reddened.

Richard looked at the bag for the first time.

Something in his eyes changed.

He had not known.

Claire noticed.

That mattered.

Her family conspiracy was not one clean machine.

It was several selfish people making separate decisions and assuming the others would protect them.

That meant cracks.

Claire only needed to widen them.

She looked at Margaret.

"Mom, ask him where the seventy four million went."

Margaret did.

Richard refused to answer.

Claire looked at Daniel.

"Ask him whether Victor knows the company books are false."

Daniel looked suddenly nervous.

Claire turned to Richard.

"Ask Daniel what he promised Victor about my baby."

Daniel's head snapped toward her.

"I promised nothing."

Richard looked at him.

Claire had guessed.

But Daniel's reaction told her she had guessed close enough.

"What did you promise?" Richard asked.

Daniel stepped backward.

"Nothing."

"Daniel."

"It was just custody language."

Claire went still.

Margaret whispered, "What custody language?"

Daniel looked trapped.

Claire's voice was almost inaudible.

"You negotiated custody of my child."

"No."

"Before telling me you wanted a divorce."

"It was contingency planning."

"For who?"

Daniel did not answer.

Richard stood abruptly.

"Enough."

He looked at Daniel with genuine anger.

Claire saw another crack open.

Richard had expected Daniel to surrender Claire.

He had not expected Daniel to negotiate separately over the child.

Richard walked toward the door.

Claire called after him.

"Where are you going?"

"To fix this."

She laughed.

"You can't."

Richard stopped.

Claire's eyes held his.

"Because Olivia has copies."

That was the moment Richard finally became afraid.

He left the room immediately.

Claire looked at Rachel.

Rachel understood.

"Your attorney tried to enter the building twenty minutes ago."

Claire sat forward.

"What?"

"Security stopped her."

"Why?"

Rachel's voice hardened.

"Someone removed her from your visitor authorization."

Claire looked at Daniel.

He looked away.

Rachel stepped closer.

"I'm fixing that now."

Then the intercom at the nurses' station sounded.

A delivery had arrived for Richard Bennett.

Rachel walked into the hallway.

Claire could see through the door glass.

A hospital employee handed Richard a long white garment bag.

Bridal white.

Claire felt the blood drain from her face.

Her father took it.

Clipped to the outside was an envelope with her name.

Rachel saw it too.

She turned toward Claire.

Claire looked at the dark restraint strap.

At Daniel.

At Margaret's handbag.

At the garment bag.

And she understood that asking politely was over.

Ten minutes later, Daniel tried to tie the restraint strap back around Claire's ankle.

That was when Claire fought him.

That was when the stool crashed.

May you like

That was when Rachel activated the recorder.

And that was when Claire finally opened the envelope.
