Chapter 3 - The Husband Who Had Already Been Paid)

Claire locked the bedroom door.

Daniel knocked three times.

Then stopped pretending to be patient.

"Claire, open the door."

She sat at the edge of the bed with her phone pressed to her ear.

Olivia Grant had been Claire's attorney for six years, but she had known the Bennett family much longer.

She had once worked for Richard.

That was precisely why Claire trusted her.

Olivia knew how Bennett Meridian hid its problems.

She knew which executives remained loyal to Richard.

She knew which legal firms would alert him if anyone asked the wrong question.

Most importantly, Olivia had left Bennett Meridian after refusing to sign a misleading debt disclosure.

Richard still called her disloyal.

Claire called her careful.

"Start at the beginning," Claire whispered.

Olivia did.

Three months earlier, one of Bennett Meridian's logistics subsidiaries had supposedly purchased warehouse automation equipment from a Nevada company called Westfall Industrial Systems.

Twenty six million dollars.

The equipment did not exist.

Another subsidiary later transferred nineteen million to Westfall for consulting.

A medical device division paid eleven million for licensing rights.

The remaining transfers were smaller.

All led to related shell companies.

Olivia had tracked beneficial ownership through corporate filings and bank disclosures supplied by a whistleblower inside Bennett Meridian.

Claire listened without interrupting.

Then Olivia said, "The money eventually went into two places."

"Where?"

"One account is controlled by your father."

Claire was not surprised.

"And the other?"

Olivia hesitated.

"An investment partnership registered to Daniel."

Claire looked toward the locked bedroom door.

Daniel was still outside.

"How much?"

"Nine point four million."

The room seemed to shrink.

Claire heard Daniel's voice through the door.

"Claire, your mother is leaving."

Claire ignored him.

"Why would Dad pay Daniel nine million dollars?"

"I don't know yet."

Claire did.

Or at least she suspected.

"What else?"

Olivia sighed.

"Victor Langley appears on one of the agreements."

Claire's hand tightened around the phone.

"Doing what?"

"Providing bridge financing."

"To cover the money Dad moved?"

"Possibly."

Claire stood.

Her injured ankle protested.

She limped to the desk and opened her laptop.

"Send me everything."

"Not to your normal email."

"Why?"

"Because someone accessed your account yesterday."

Claire froze.

"From where?"

"Your home network."

She looked toward the door.

Daniel.

"Send it to the secure address."

"I already did."

Claire opened the encrypted mailbox Olivia had helped her set up months earlier.

Files began loading.

Bank transfers.

Corporate records.

Loan agreements.

Then a scanned document.

Claire enlarged it.

At first she did not understand what she was seeing.

It was a private side letter between Victor Langley and Richard Bennett.

The language was dense.

But one sentence was brutally clear.

Upon completion of the family alignment event, Langley Capital would release the second financing tranche of ninety million dollars.

Family alignment event.

Claire scrolled farther.

An attached schedule listed several possible conditions.

One was transfer of Claire's voting proxy.

Another was acquisition by Langley of voting influence over Claire's shares through a marital property arrangement.

Claire stared at the screen.

"Olivia."

"I'm here."

"What does marital property arrangement mean?"

"It means exactly what it sounds like."

"I'm already married."

"Yes."

The silence between them said everything.

Claire looked at the wedding ring sitting downstairs.

"Daniel is being paid to divorce me."

"We don't know that."

"Nine point four million."

"We know he received money through an entity. We don't know why."

Claire looked at the locked door.

She did not need a courtroom standard yet.

She only needed enough truth to understand the man outside.

"Can they force a divorce?"

"No."

"Can they force a marriage?"

"No."

"Can they take my shares if I refuse?"

"Not legally."

Claire heard the important word.

Legally.

"What are they planning?"

"I don't know."

Then Olivia added, "But I think they're running out of time."

Claire scrolled through the loan agreement.

A covenant deadline appeared.

Friday.

Two days away.

If Bennett Meridian failed to secure new capital by Friday afternoon, one of its largest lenders could accelerate more than two hundred million dollars in debt.

Richard's empire could collapse.

Claire understood.

They did not simply want her cooperation.

They needed it immediately.

Daniel knocked again.

"Claire."

She ended the call.

"Come in."

There was a pause.

He opened the door slowly.

Claire sat at the desk.

She had closed the laptop.

Daniel looked at her empty ring finger.

"Can we talk?"

"We are talking."

He entered.

"Your mother didn't mean to upset you."

"My mother offered me to another man."

"That's not what happened."

"What happened?"

Daniel closed the door behind him.

Claire watched that small movement.

"Victor made a proposal."

"To marry me."

"He thinks it would create confidence around the company."

Claire stared at him.

"And you?"

"What about me?"

"What do you get?"

Daniel's eyes shifted.

Claire knew him too well.

"How much did my father pay you?"

His face went still.

Claire's heartbeat accelerated.

Daniel smiled weakly.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"Nine point four million."

The smile vanished.

There it was.

The truth.

He stepped closer.

"Who told you that?"

Claire stood.

"That's your response?"

"Who have you been talking to?"

"Olivia."

Daniel swore under his breath.

Claire felt the final piece click into place.

"You knew."

Daniel's voice lowered.

"Your father was trying to protect the company."

"With stolen money?"

"He moved cash temporarily."

"Into your investment partnership?"

"That wasn't my idea."

"But you took it."

Daniel came closer.

Claire stepped back.

Her ankle hit the bed frame.

Pain shot up her leg.

She gasped.

Daniel reached for her.

She slapped his hand away.

"Don't."

His expression hardened.

"You need to stop acting like everyone is against you."

Claire almost laughed.

"My father stole money. My husband took nine million dollars. My mother just asked me to marry the man financing the cover up."

"You make everything sound insane."

"It is insane."

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Listen to me. Your father needs the Langley deal. If Bennett Meridian collapses, your shares are worthless."

"So I should sell myself?"

"No one is selling you."

"What are you doing, Daniel?"

He looked away.

Claire knew the answer before he said it.

"I signed a separation agreement."

She stopped breathing.

"Without telling me."

"It isn't effective without your signature."

"Why?"

"Because this marriage hasn't worked for a long time."

"Then why are you still here?"

Daniel's face changed again.

Less guilt now.

More impatience.

"Because you are pregnant."

Claire placed one hand over her stomach.

"Our baby."

"Yes."

"Does my father pay you more if I sign?"

Daniel said nothing.

Claire whispered, "Oh my God."

He moved closer.

"You don't understand the pressure your father is under."

"Get out."

"Claire."

"Get out."

"You are not thinking clearly."

She picked up her phone.

"I said get out."

Daniel stared at the phone.

Then at her.

He backed toward the door.

Before leaving, he said, "Be careful who you trust."

Claire answered immediately.

"I already learned that."

Daniel left.

Claire locked the door again.

Ten minutes later, she sent Olivia copies of everything from the encrypted account and activated automatic cloud backup on her phone.

Then she wrote a message.

If anything happens to me, release everything.

She scheduled it to send automatically in twelve hours unless she canceled it.

For the first time that night, Claire felt safer.

She did not know Daniel had installed family management software on the home's network months earlier.

She did not know he could see when her phone accessed an encrypted server.

And she did not know that downstairs, Daniel had just told Margaret one sentence.

"She knows about the money."

Margaret called Richard immediately.

Richard listened in silence.

Then asked, "How bad is her ankle?"

Daniel frowned.

"Why?"

May you like

Richard's answer would decide everything that happened next.

"Because tomorrow she needs to be somewhere we can control."
