Chapter 6 - the child no one recorded

Claire read the note until the words lost their shape.
There were two children in the nursery that night.
Only one was reported missing.
She removed the photograph from the locker.
It showed a nursery decorated with pale roses and silver stars. Eleanor Waverly sat in a chair near the window, holding a baby in each arm.
The infant on her right wore the rose bracelet.
The infant on her left wore the moon bracelet.
Claire turned the photograph over.
A date had been written on the back.
Six weeks before the fire.
Below it were two names.
Waverly Rose.
Vivian Moon.
Claire’s knees weakened.
Every newspaper report described Eleanor as the mother of one daughter.
No article mentioned twins.
Claire opened the leather pouch.
Inside was an unsigned birth registration form for two female infants. The section naming the father had been left blank.
A handwritten medical report stated that the babies had been born prematurely at a private residence and transferred to the hotel nursery under strict confidentiality.
Claire reached for the cassette tape.
The old station office still contained a tape player used as decoration on a shelf. She carried it into the dim room and inserted the cassette.
Static filled the air.
Then a woman began speaking.
“My name is Helena March.”
Claire recognized the voice immediately.
It was the woman from her dream.
“If Miriam is playing this recording, then I failed to return.”
A faint sound of crying could be heard behind Helena.
“Eleanor believes both babies are safe. Thomas insisted that Vivian’s existence remain secret until the trust documents were corrected. He claimed the board would use the second birth to challenge the succession.”
Helena paused.
“But Thomas is lying.”
Claire leaned closer to the machine.
“He is not protecting the children. He is choosing which child the family will acknowledge.”
A door slammed somewhere in the recording.
Helena lowered her voice.
“Graham has prepared a death certificate for one infant. I do not know which name he intends to erase.”
The tape clicked.
For several seconds, there was only static.
Then Helena returned, breathing quickly.
“The fire has started. Someone locked the nursery corridor.”
A baby cried loudly.
“I have Waverly. Agnes has Vivian. We are taking separate exits.”
Another voice shouted in the distance.
Helena continued.
“If one child survives, the trust remains protected. If both survive, they will be hunted by the same people who created this lie.”
The recording ended with three clear rings of a silver bell.
Claire sat motionless.
The sound was the same one from her dreams.
She removed the cassette.
A shadow passed beneath the office door.
Claire turned.
Someone stood in the corridor.
She gathered the documents and hurried toward the rear exit.
The door opened before she reached it.
Daniel Ruiz entered with both hands visible.
“Mrs. Vale, I’m not here to hurt you.”
“How did you find me?”
“Your husband placed a location tracker in your car.”
Claire’s stomach tightened.
Daniel held up a small black device sealed inside an evidence bag.
“I removed it.”
“Why would you help me?”
“Because Richard used your identity to enter a restricted hotel archive. Because someone attacked Miriam Hale. And because Eleanor received a letter claiming her daughter survived.”
Claire studied him.
“Does Eleanor know you’re here?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“I don’t know who inside the hotel can be trusted.”
Claire thought about Helena’s warning.
Do not trust anyone who knows what the bracelet contains.
She showed Daniel the photograph but kept the second bracelet hidden inside the pouch.
Daniel’s face changed.
“Twins?”
“Did Eleanor ever mention another child?”
“Never.”
“Then either she was lied to, or she is part of the lie.”
Daniel looked at the cassette player.
“What was on the tape?”
Before Claire could answer, his radio activated.
“Mr. Ruiz, return to the hotel immediately. Mrs. Waverly has collapsed in the boardroom.”
Daniel lifted the radio.
“What happened?”
A voice responded through static.
“She received DNA results concerning her daughter.”
Claire felt cold.
“What DNA results?”
Daniel’s gaze moved toward her.
The radio answered.
“The report says the surviving woman is not related to Eleanor Waverly.”
Claire slowly touched her stomach.

Richard’s forged report had reached the board.
And somewhere inside the hotel, someone had already begun erasing her for the second time.
