Chapter 14 - the room beneath the mother

Room 3701 appeared empty.
Daniel unlocked the door while Detective Torres and two officers waited behind him.
Eleanor entered first despite everyone’s objections.
Claire followed.
The curtains were closed.
A cup of tea sat untouched on the desk. A gray coat hung near the door. The bed had been made with perfect precision.
“Agnes?” Eleanor called.
No answer.
Daniel checked the bathroom.
Empty.
Claire noticed a hotel stationery pad beside the telephone.
The top sheet was blank, but pressure marks remained from a message written on the page above it.
She shaded the paper lightly with the side of a pencil.
Words appeared.
Midnight.
Old nursery.
Bring both bracelets.
Come alone, Eleanor.
Eleanor read the message.
“The nursery was destroyed.”
“No,” Daniel said. “The public section was rebuilt. Part of the original service wing was sealed behind the renovation.”
“Why?”
“Structural damage.”
Graham entered the room with Miriam.
“Not structural damage,” he said. “Evidence.”
Daniel looked at him.
“What evidence?”
“The original nursery door. The fire suppression controls. The service elevator log.”
Eleanor turned toward him.
“You allowed the area to be sealed.”
“Thomas ordered it.”
“And you obeyed.”
“Yes.”
Claire searched the room.
Inside the desk drawer, she found a small envelope addressed to her.
Not Waverly.
Not Vivian.
Claire.
She opened it.
The note contained one sentence.
Your mother will choose the bracelet, but the scar will choose the child.
Claire read it twice.
“What scar?”
Eleanor looked toward her left shoulder.
“When Waverly was born, she had a small crescent-shaped mark beneath her shoulder blade.”
Claire’s hand moved toward her own shoulder.
She had no such mark.
Miriam stared at her.
“What?” Claire asked.
“When I found you, there was a bandage on your back.”
Claire felt cold.
“What was beneath it?”
“A burn.”
“From the fire?”
“I assumed so.”
Eleanor stepped closer.
“May I see?”
Claire hesitated, then lowered the back of her dress slightly.
A pale scar curved beneath her right shoulder blade.
Not a burn.
A crescent.
Eleanor covered her mouth.
Claire looked at her.
“What does that mean?”
“The mark belonged to Waverly.”
“But the bracelet may have been switched.”
“The note says the scar chooses the child.”
Graham shook his head.
“Too easy.”
Everyone turned toward him.
“Thomas knew about the birthmark. So did Margaret. A scar can be copied.”
Claire pulled the fabric back into place.
“You think someone marked a baby?”
“I think people willing to burn a nursery are willing to do worse.”
At midnight, Eleanor refused to follow Agnes’s instruction alone.
Daniel placed security teams at both entrances to the sealed east wing. Detective Torres waited in the service corridor. Claire remained beside Eleanor, carrying the rose bracelet.
Miriam held the moon bracelet.
They reached the old nursery through a hidden door behind the hotel chapel.
The room had been preserved beneath dust and darkness.
A carved crib stood near the wall.
Smoke stains covered the ceiling.
The silver bell rested on a shelf.
Eleanor touched it.
Three rings echoed through the room.
A light turned on behind the observation glass.
An elderly woman sat in a chair on the other side.
Her hair was white, and an oxygen tube rested beneath her nose.
“Agnes,” Eleanor whispered.
The woman raised one trembling hand.
“Lock the door.”
Daniel checked the hallway.
“Why?”
“Because Vivian is already inside the hotel.”
Claire stepped toward the glass.
“Where?”
Agnes looked directly at her.
“She has been inside for years.”
The lights went out.
A gunshot sounded somewhere beyond the sealed corridor.
Claire heard running footsteps.
Daniel pushed Eleanor and Claire behind the stone wall as alarms began ringing throughout the hotel.
Emergency lights flashed red.
When the observation room was opened, Agnes had disappeared.
Her oxygen tank remained beside the chair.

On the wall behind it, someone had written a message in black ink.
THE WRONG SISTER MARRIED RICHARD VALE.
