Chapter 11 - the night graham kane made a mistake)

Malcolm Voss had been invisible because everyone was looking at Graham.
That was exactly what he wanted.
Financial investigators reconstructed the partnership.
Henry Voss discovered Graham stealing from the family trust.
Instead of helping his brother expose the crime, Malcolm joined Graham.
Together they expanded it.
Henry threatened to inform Richard.
Two weeks later, Henry died.
Police reopened the investigation into his car crash.
Evidence of tampering appeared almost immediately.
Graham and Malcolm had spent years believing they were smarter than everyone around them.
But fear divided them.
The trust audit froze their money.
Graham ran.
Malcolm remained close.
And somewhere between those two decisions, one of them made a mistake.
Graham called Natalie.
Police were monitoring her phone.
He demanded she meet him.
He claimed Malcolm planned to kill Claire.
Natalie asked where.
Graham gave an address.
A closed restaurant overlooking the Hudson River.
Ortiz prepared a tactical operation.
Claire was ordered to remain home.
She ignored the emotional urge to go.
This time, protecting Abigail mattered more than answers.
Natalie went wearing a recording device.
Graham waited inside the dark restaurant.
His suit was wrinkled.
His hair was uncombed.
He looked nothing like the man who had spent years controlling every room he entered.
Natalie stood across from him.
"Where's Malcolm?"
"I don't know."
"You said he was going after Claire."
"He is."
"Why should I believe you?"
"Because I know him."
"You knew him when you stole my niece."
Graham flinched.
"I never wanted Abby hurt."
"You kidnapped her."
"I moved her."
"She was a baby."
"I had no choice."
Natalie laughed through tears.
"People with no choices don't steal twenty-seven million dollars."
Graham looked toward the window.
"You think that money was for me?"
"Wasn't it?"
"Most of it is gone."
"Where?"
"Malcolm."
Police listening outside exchanged looks.
Natalie continued.
"Why did you keep Abby alive?"
"You know why."
"The trust."
"Yes."
"And after her fifth birthday?"
Graham looked at the floor.
Natalie's voice hardened.
"What were you going to do to her?"
"I don't know."
"Yes, you do."
"Malcolm handled the final stage."
"What final stage?"
Graham shook his head.
"I never asked."
Natalie stepped closer.
"You expect me to believe that?"
"I told myself he was going to create a new identity."
"You told yourself."
Graham's face broke.
"Do you think I sleep?"
"I hope you don't."
Outside, Ortiz listened.
Graham whispered, "There was supposed to be more time."
"Abby spent four years waiting for her mother."
"I know."
"No, you don't."
Graham suddenly looked at Natalie.
"Malcolm knew Claire would never stop searching. That's why he prepared the insurance policy."
Natalie went still.
"He planned to kill her."
"He considered it."
"And you let him?"
"I stopped him twice."
Natalie stared in disbelief.
"You want credit?"
"No."
"For not murdering my sister sooner?"
"No."
Graham covered his face.
"I made a mistake."
Natalie stepped backward.
"You made thousands."
That was when Graham made the one mistake the police needed.
He said, "The evidence from Henry's car is gone anyway."
Ortiz looked at the prosecutor beside her.
No one had told Graham that Henry Voss's accident was being reinvestigated.
He had just demonstrated knowledge only someone involved could possess.
Police entered.
Graham did not resist.
As officers handcuffed him, he looked at Natalie.
"Malcolm is still out there."
Ortiz stopped.
"Where?"
"I don't know."
"Then help us find him."
Graham laughed bitterly.
"You still think I'm the dangerous one."
Claire received the call at 11:30 that night.
Graham was in custody.
For a few seconds she felt nothing.
Then relief came.
Not joy.
Not victory.
Just the sensation of one locked door opening.
She went upstairs.
Abigail was sleeping in the nursery.
The crib had been replaced with a small bed earlier that day.
Claire stood in the doorway.
Ethan joined her.
"They got Graham."
"I heard."
"How do you feel?"
"I thought I would feel different."
"Me too."
Claire looked at him.
"What happens to us?"
Ethan did not pretend to misunderstand.
"I don't know."
"We can't become who we were before."
"No."
"Too much happened."
"Yes."
Claire looked at Abigail.
"But maybe we don't need to."
Ethan smiled faintly.
"Maybe not."
Abigail moved beneath the blanket.
Claire stepped closer.
Her daughter opened her eyes.
"Claire?"
"I'm here."
"Did they catch him?"
Claire hesitated.
"One of the bad men."
Abigail nodded sleepily.
"Good."
She reached for Claire's hand.
Then, without opening her eyes, she whispered something Claire had waited four years to hear.
"Mommy, stay."
Claire sat beside her.
"I'm staying."
Ethan turned away to hide his tears.
For several minutes the house felt almost peaceful.
Then every light went out.
The security alarm died.
The hallway became black.
Ethan immediately grabbed his phone.
"No signal."
Claire's body filled with fear.
Downstairs, glass shattered.
A police officer shouted.
Then a gunshot cracked through the house.
Claire pulled Abigail from the bed.
Ethan moved in front of them.
Footsteps came up the stairs.
Slow.
Controlled.
Someone stopped outside the nursery.
A man's voice came through the darkness.
"Claire."
May you like
She knew the voice.
Malcolm Voss had found them.
