Chapter 10 - the sister at the blue door)

September fourth arrived beneath a sky without snow.
Abigail turned five at 6:42 in the morning.
Claire had memorized the time from the day she was born.
At 6:41, Claire sat beside her daughter in the brownstone kitchen.
Abigail ate pancakes.
Ethan stood at the stove.
There were no balloons.
No crowd.
No giant cake.
Dr. Sloane had recommended keeping the day simple.
At 6:42, Claire looked at the clock.
Four years of searching ended and began again in the same second.
"Happy birthday," she whispered.
Abigail looked at her pancake.
"Do I get another one?"
Ethan laughed.
"You can have ten."
Dr. Sloane raised an eyebrow.
"Perhaps not ten."
Abigail smiled.
It was the first unguarded smile Claire had seen.
Claire nearly cried.
Her phone rang.
Ortiz.
The independent trust audit had automatically begun.
Within minutes, the system froze several suspicious accounts.
Someone attempted to move eighteen million dollars overseas.
The transfer failed.
Then Graham Kane called Claire.
Police traced the call immediately.
Claire answered on speaker.
"Hello, Claire."
His voice sounded calm.
That made her angrier.
"Where are you?"
"You know this was never supposed to happen."
"Finding my daughter?"
"Any of it."
"You kidnapped a baby."
"I protected a family."
"You stole from it."
Silence.
Then Graham sighed.
"Your mother designed a system that would destroy everything your father built."
"You mean it would expose you."
"I kept the company alive."
"With stolen money?"
"You don't understand finance."
"I understand kidnapping."
Graham's tone changed.
"Ask your father what would have happened if the trust collapsed."
"Where are you?"
"Ask Natalie why she signed the first authorization."
Claire looked across the room.
Natalie, under police supervision, went pale.
"What authorization?"
Graham laughed softly.
"She never told you."
The call ended.
Everyone looked at Natalie.
She began shaking her head.
"I didn't know."
Claire stood.
"What did you sign?"
"Years ago. Graham said it was a temporary trust modification after Mom died."
"What did it do?"
"I don't know."
Richard looked furious.
"You signed without reading?"
"I trusted my husband."
The room went silent.
Natalie covered her face.
Ortiz's team recovered the document within an hour.
Natalie's signature had allowed Graham to establish the shell structure later used to steal trust funds.
She had unknowingly opened the first door.
But that was not the worst discovery.
A clause in the document transferred emergency authority to Graham if Richard, Claire and Natalie became unable to serve simultaneously.
Unable included death.
Claire looked at Ortiz.
"He planned all of us."
"Possibly."
Richard sat down heavily.
Natalie began crying.
Then Abigail entered the room.
Everyone immediately stopped speaking.
She looked from face to face.
"Why is everybody sad?"
Claire knelt.
"Grown-up problems."
"Is it because I'm five?"
"No."
Abigail thought about this.
"Can I see the blue door?"
Claire looked at Dr. Sloane.
Two hours later, under police protection, they returned to the farmhouse.
Abigail entered holding Claire's hand.
For the first time, she had chosen to.
Inside, she moved through the rooms slowly.
She remembered a cupboard where Naomi kept cereal.
A mark on the wall where she had once drawn with a crayon.
A loose stair.
Then she entered the upstairs bedroom.
She pointed beneath the bed.
"Sad Lady put papers."
Police had searched beneath it already.
Nothing.
Abigail frowned.
"Not under. Inside."
The old bed frame contained hollow wooden supports.
Inside one was a rolled stack of documents.
Naomi had hidden copies of Graham's records.
Names.
Payments.
Dates.
Photographs.
One document was especially important.
A handwritten agreement between Graham and Thomas Reed.
It described moving "the child" and controlling "the mother."
At the bottom was a third signature.
Not Graham's.
Not Thomas's.
Claire stared at it.
Richard recognized it first.
"No."
Natalie looked over his shoulder.
Her face turned white.
The third signature belonged to Malcolm Voss.
Henry Voss's brother.
Henry had been the accountant who died two weeks before Abigail disappeared.
Malcolm had later become chief financial officer of the Whitmore company.
He was still employed there.
Ortiz immediately called for his arrest.
Too late.
Malcolm had left the company headquarters forty minutes earlier.
Security footage showed him carrying a laptop bag.
He had taken the private elevator to the underground garage.
His car was still there.
He had disappeared on foot.
Investigators searched his office.
Inside a locked drawer they found a photograph of Graham.
A photograph of Naomi.
A photograph of Abigail.
And a recent photograph of Claire.
