Chapter 9 - What Victor Left Behind)

Sophie stayed overnight at the hospital.

By midnight, she was breathing normally.

Daniel sat beside her bed.

She slept with Emily's old stuffed rabbit beneath one arm.

Rachel sat by the window.

Neither spoke for a long time.

Finally Rachel said, "She could have died."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"I know."

"You knew Claire was dangerous."

"I knew something was wrong."

"That's not different enough."

Daniel did not defend himself.

He had wanted the truth.

He had wanted Emily's death explained.

He had wanted Victor trapped.

And somewhere in that obsession, he had allowed himself to believe he could control every risk.

He had been wrong.

"I'm done."

Rachel looked at him.

"With what?"

"Chasing this at Sophie's expense."

He touched his daughter's small hand.

"If Victor disappears, he disappears."

Rachel nodded.

That promise lasted forty minutes.

Marcus arrived at one ten in the morning.

Daniel met him in the corridor.

"We opened the memory card."

Daniel shook his head.

"I don't want to know tonight."

Marcus studied him.

"You need to."

"Why?"

"Because Victor didn't leave it accidentally."

Daniel looked toward Sophie's room.

"Then tell me."

Marcus handed him a tablet.

A video began.

Victor appeared.

The recording had been made recently.

"If Daniel Bennett is watching this, then Claire failed."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

Victor continued.

"You probably believe this is about money."

He smiled.

"It isn't."

Marcus folded his arms.

Victor continued.

"Emily discovered something larger than financial fraud. She discovered why certain hospital contracts mattered."

Images appeared.

Warehouses.

Medical supply facilities.

Shipping documents.

"Whitmore Holdings was only one piece."

Daniel leaned closer.

Victor's smile disappeared.

"Your wife found records connecting private contractors, hospital networks, and a company called Ardent Meridian."

Marcus stopped the video.

"Know that name?"

Daniel shook his head.

Marcus resumed playback.

Victor continued.

"Emily thought exposing us would save people."

His voice hardened.

"Instead, she made herself dangerous."

Daniel felt rage rising.

Victor looked directly into the camera.

"I did not kill Emily Bennett."

Daniel froze.

"But I know who did."

The video ended.

Daniel stared at the black screen.

"That's it?"

Marcus nodded.

"Nothing else."

"He's playing with us."

"Yes."

"Then let him."

Marcus raised an eyebrow.

Daniel handed back the tablet.

"I'm not risking Sophie again."

Marcus nodded slowly.

"Fair."

Daniel returned to the room.

At six thirty, Sophie woke.

She looked at him.

"Wedding done?"

Daniel smiled sadly.

"Yes."

"Mommy Claire?"

Daniel hesitated.

"Claire won't be living with us anymore."

Sophie thought about that.

"She mad?"

"No."

"Grandpa mad?"

Daniel looked at her.

"Why would Grandpa be mad?"

Sophie played with the edge of the blanket.

"Because Mommy Emily told lady."

"What lady?"

Sophie looked confused.

"Lady car."

Daniel's heartbeat changed.

"What lady car?"

"Lady saw Mommy."

Rachel stood.

Daniel crouched closer.

"Sweetheart, when did someone tell you about a lady in a car?"

Sophie touched the silver bracelet.

"Grandpa."

Daniel and Rachel exchanged a look.

"Grandpa told you about Mommy Emily?"

Sophie nodded.

"What did he say?"

"Mommy talked to lady."

"Did he say her name?"

Sophie struggled.

"Tee."

Daniel stopped breathing.

Teresa.

He called Marcus.

Within twenty minutes, Marcus's team reexamined the audio transmitter inside the bracelet.

They discovered it could do more than transmit.

It stored short audio clips.

Most involved Claire questioning Sophie.

One clip, however, contained Victor's voice.

"Tell Grandpa where Daddy put the phone and I'll tell you where Teresa lives."

Claire answered.

"She's three, Dad."

Victor laughed.

"Children remember more than adults think."

Then he said an address.

An address in northern Vermont.

Marcus searched it.

The property belonged to a woman named Theresa Gray.

Different spelling.

Different surname.

Age fifty six.

No recent photographs.

Daniel stared at the screen.

"Teresa Grant."

Marcus nodded.

"Could be."

"You said she disappeared."

"Maybe she changed her name."

Daniel looked through the hospital window at the sunrise.

He had promised to stop.

But Emily's final message had named Teresa.

Victor had named Teresa.

And now they had an address.

Daniel whispered, "Find out if she's there."

Marcus left.

By that evening, Claire had been formally questioned.

She admitted knowing Sophie was allergic to flowers but claimed she had not known the bouquet was real.

The wedding coordinator had vanished.

Security footage showed her leaving through a service corridor thirty seconds after giving Sophie the flowers.

Her employment records were false.

Victor remained missing.

But the viral wedding footage spread everywhere.

Millions watched Daniel end the ceremony.

Public opinion turned violently against Claire.

Sponsors withdrew from Whitmore charities.

Reporters surrounded Victor's offices.

Federal investigators reopened several old financial inquiries.

For the first time in years, the Whitmore family could not control the story.

Then, at eleven fourteen that night, Daniel received an unknown text.

You are asking the wrong question.

A second message arrived.

Emily did not die because she discovered Victor's crimes.

A third.

She died because she discovered yours.

May you like

Daniel stared at the phone.

He had no idea what it meant.
