Chapter 11 - The Man Who Introduced Them)

Daniel called Jonathan from the car.
No answer.
He called the office.
Disconnected.
Marcus searched property records.
Jonathan's Manhattan apartment had been sold six weeks earlier.
His consulting company dissolved three months earlier.
His assistant had resigned.
His phone stopped transmitting two days before the wedding.
"He knew," Daniel said.
Marcus nodded.
"Someone warned him."
"Claire?"
"Victor?"
"Or somebody else."
Daniel stared through the windshield.
Rain streaked the glass.
"Why would Jonathan arrange Emily's death?"
"Maybe he didn't."
"Teresa said he did."
"She said the arranger used that name."
Daniel looked at him.
"You think someone impersonated him?"
"I think we verify everything."
Daniel thought back.
Jonathan had known Emily.
He had attended their wedding.
He had celebrated Sophie's birth.
After Emily died, he had sat beside Daniel at the funeral.
He helped reorganize the estate.
He encouraged Daniel to return to work.
He suggested the Bennett Foundation gala.
And at that gala, he had said five words Daniel remembered perfectly.
There's someone you should meet.
Then he introduced Claire.
The realization made Daniel nauseous.
The relationship had not been an accident.
It had been arranged.
When Daniel returned home, Sophie ran toward him.
He lifted her and held her longer than usual.
She touched his face.
"Daddy crying?"
"No."
"You are."
He smiled.
"A little."
She kissed his cheek.
That evening, Daniel opened every financial file Jonathan had handled.
Trust documents.
Insurance.
Business holdings.
Foundation investments.
Marcus's forensic accountant joined remotely.
At two in the morning, they found the first anomaly.
A company named Northstar Fiduciary had been inserted into a succession clause after Emily's death.
If Daniel became incapacitated, Northstar could temporarily administer several Bennett charitable assets.
Northstar was owned by another company.
That company was owned by another.
Four layers later, the ownership disappeared into Ardent Meridian.
Daniel stared at the screen.
"So this is what they wanted."
Marcus nodded.
"Control."
"Why marry Claire to me?"
"Because marriage gives them an inside position."
"And the forged documents strengthen it."
"Exactly."
Daniel leaned back.
"Then why Sophie?"
Marcus was quiet.
Daniel looked at him.
"What?"
"Your will."
Daniel understood.
"If I die, Sophie inherits."
"Yes."
"So Claire gains nothing."
"Not directly."
"But if Claire becomes Sophie's legal guardian?"
Marcus nodded.
Daniel stood so suddenly the chair fell backward.
"No."
"Daniel."
"No."
He walked toward the door.
"Where are you going?"
"To the police."
"We already gave them everything."
"Then I'm taking Sophie somewhere nobody can find us."
Marcus caught his arm.
"Listen."
Daniel turned.
Marcus lowered his voice.
"If Claire's objective was guardianship, why attack Sophie publicly?"
Daniel stopped.
Marcus continued.
"The flowers don't fit."
Daniel stared at him.
"Unless the attack wasn't part of the original plan."
"What do you mean?"
"Claire panicked."
Daniel remembered Victor's nod.
"Victor ordered it."
"Maybe."
"Why?"
"Because Sophie knew about the phone."
Daniel looked toward the ceiling.
The wedding attack had not been about killing Sophie.
It had been about destroying evidence or creating chaos.
Victor disappeared during that chaos.
Claire became the public villain.
Everyone watched her.
No one watched him.
Marcus said what Daniel was thinking.
"Claire was sacrificed."
Daniel slowly nodded.
Victor had used his own daughter as a distraction.
That evening, Claire called from county detention.
Daniel refused twice.
On the third attempt, he answered.
Her voice was barely audible.
"Daniel."
He said nothing.
"I need to see you."
"No."
"My father is going to kill me."
Daniel almost laughed.
"You hurt my daughter."
"I know."
"You knew she was allergic."
"I know."
"You pressed the flowers against her face."
Claire started crying.
"I was supposed to scare her."
Daniel's grip tightened.
"You could have killed her."
"I didn't know the reaction would be that fast."
"That makes it better?"
"No."
Silence.
Then Claire whispered.
"My father said if Sophie panicked, she'd tell us where Emily's phone was."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Why did you do it?"
"Because he owns me."
"You're almost thirty years old."
"You don't understand."
"Then explain."
Claire lowered her voice.
"He killed my mother."
Daniel froze.
May you like
"What?"
"And Emily found out."
