Chapter 8 - Public Humiliation

The estate lawn was filled before noon.
Judges, executives, county officials and television crews moved beneath white tents. A stage had been built near the fountain. Behind it, a large banner displayed Damian’s campaign slogan.
Nora arrived alone.
The red gown drew immediate attention.
Celeste met her near the terrace.
“Where are the trucks?”
“There are no trucks.”
“Where are your employees?”
“They are working for honest clients.”
Celeste’s smile remained fixed because photographers stood nearby.
“You will come inside.”
“No.”
“Do not create a scene.”
“I did not create this.”
Damian approached with his campaign manager.
To the watching guests, he appeared calm.
“We can discuss the catering issue privately,” he said.
“There is nothing to discuss.”
The campaign manager whispered into Damian’s ear. Nora heard only a few words.
Reporters asking. Shelter families here. Need her statement.
Damian took Nora’s arm and guided her toward the estate.
She pulled free.
“Do not touch me.”
Several cameras turned toward them.
Celeste stepped closer.
“You have spent three years enjoying everything this family provided.”
“I built my company before I met Damian.”
“And we can destroy it after you leave him.”
Nora noticed movement through the guesthouse window.
The campaign manager’s assistant had opened the locked cabinet.
Three blue ledgers sat on the desk.
Nora’s heart began beating faster.
The warrant team was positioned less than a mile away, but the warrant still required final confirmation from the magistrate.
She touched her smartwatch but did not speak.
Not yet.
Damian followed her gaze and realized what she had seen.
He turned toward the campaign manager.
“Close the guesthouse.”
The manager hurried across the lawn.
Nora stepped after him.
Celeste blocked her.
“You are going nowhere until you agree to serve the guests.”
“I will not prepare food purchased with stolen relief money.”
Her voice carried farther than she intended.
Nearby conversations stopped.
Celeste’s expression changed from control to rage.
“You selfish little nobody.”
She seized Nora’s hair and forced her downward.
The contact lasted only seconds, but it happened in front of hundreds of witnesses.
Guests gasped.
Phones rose.
Nora’s knee struck the lawn. She steadied herself with one hand.
Damian did not intervene.
That was the moment the entire county saw him clearly.
Not when Nora mentioned shell companies.
Not when agents arrived.
When his mother publicly humiliated his wife and he watched because stopping her would weaken his authority.
Nora lifted her face toward him.
“You billed the county twice,” she said. “Then paid your own shell company.”
Damian’s confidence disappeared.
The campaign manager reached the guesthouse door.
Inside, his assistant lifted one of the blue ledgers from the desk and moved toward a fireplace.
Nora touched her smartwatch.
“The blue ledger is open.”
Lucas stepped forward.
Within seconds, the magistrate approved the warrant based on the accumulated evidence and the immediate risk of destruction.
The federal vehicles entered through the gates.
Lucas placed himself between Nora and Celeste.

“Step away from my sister.”
This time, Celeste obeyed.
