Chapter 5 - A Marriage of Threats

Damian became more dangerous as inauguration day approached.

He did not shout often. He did not need to.

He controlled Nora through contracts, employees and reputation.

First, the county delayed payments to Red Maple Catering.

Then two long-term clients canceled private events after receiving calls from Damian’s campaign office.

A local newspaper published an anonymous claim that Nora had overcharged shelters during the flood emergency.

The allegation was false, but the damage was immediate.

Her employees began asking whether the company would survive.

Nora called a meeting in the kitchen.

“We have enough savings to cover payroll for three months,” she told them. “No one is losing a job this week.”

Her operations manager, Tasha, waited until the others left.

“Is Damian doing this?”

Nora did not answer.

Tasha folded her arms.

“I have watched you defend him for three years. I am not asking you to defend him now.”

Nora looked around the kitchen she had built before meeting Damian.

Copper pans hung above the preparation island. Recipe notes covered a whiteboard. Photographs of staff celebrations filled the wall near the pantry.

“I found evidence that county funds were stolen through our contracts.”

Tasha sat down.

“Did we do anything illegal?”

“No. Our invoices are real. But they used our work to support fake invoices from another company.”

“And the inauguration meals?”

“They want us to make them while Blue Meridian collects the payment.”

Tasha’s expression hardened.

“Then we do not cook.”

“The county could cancel everything.”

“Then we rebuild.”

Nora swallowed the emotion rising in her throat.

Damian had convinced her that twenty-seven families depended on her obedience. Tasha reminded her that loyalty was not the same as fear.

That evening, Nora returned home to find Celeste waiting in the living room.

A red satin gown lay across the sofa.

“You will wear this to the inauguration,” Celeste said.

“I have not agreed to attend.”

“You will attend. You will stand beside Damian. You will announce that Red Maple is donating the meals.”

Nora stared at her.

“The county is already paying Blue Meridian.”

Celeste’s eyes narrowed.

“You have been searching through documents that do not concern you.”

“They concern every taxpayer in this county.”

Celeste walked closer.

“Do you know what happens to women who embarrass powerful families?”

Nora held her gaze.

“They become witnesses.”

For the first time, Celeste’s confidence cracked.

Only briefly.

Then she smiled.

“You believe Lucas can save you because he carries a federal badge. But your brother cannot investigate his own family without consequences.”

“He is not investigating his family.”

“No?”

Celeste picked up the gown.

“By inauguration day, Damian will control this county. Judges attend our dinners. Police chiefs answer our calls. Business owners depend on our approval.”

She pressed the red gown into Nora’s hands.

“Wear it. Cook the meals. Smile for the cameras. After that, perhaps we will allow your little company to survive.”

Nora looked down at the satin fabric.

She understood Celeste’s mistake.

They believed she was still negotiating for her marriage and business.

She was not.

She was waiting for a warrant.
