Chapter 14 - The Wife in the Photograph

Daniel survived.
The bullet passed through his shoulder.
Evelyn recovered from the sedative.
Lily was physically unharmed.
Claire had vanished again.
Alexander sat in the mansion library until dawn, holding the photograph.
THE WRONG WOMAN CAME HOME.
Price stood beside him.
“You think Claire was an impostor?”
Alexander did not answer.
He hated that the possibility existed.
Blackridge had built its entire system around identity manipulation.
Rebecca Hayes was originally Anna Mercer.
Daniel had been officially dead for twenty-two years.
William had staged his own death.
Claire herself had been Subject Seven.
Who could Alexander trust?
Lily wheeled into the room.
Evelyn followed.
Alexander placed the photograph facedown.
Lily noticed.
“What is it?”
“Nothing you need to worry about.”
She frowned.
“You keep saying that.”
He looked at her.
Lily continued.
“Then bad things happen.”
Alexander had no response.
She rolled closer.
“The lady who came home is Mommy.”
“How do you know?”
Lily pointed at her chest.
“Because she sings wrong.”
Alexander stared.
“What?”
“Mommy sings the bunny song wrong.”
Evelyn frowned.
“What bunny song?”
“A song Mommy made.”
Lily hummed softly.
Alexander remembered.
Claire invented it when Lily was a baby.
There was one strange line about a rabbit wearing yellow shoes.
“Mommy always says blue shoes,” Lily explained.
“Blue?”
“But when she came home, she said yellow.”
Alexander’s pulse quickened.
“Did your mother ever sing blue?”
“No. Daddy, you’re wrong.”
He froze.
Lily smiled faintly.
“She always said green.”
Alexander stared at her.
Three colors.
Three versions.
Memory anchors.
Claire had taught Lily color codes.
Blue means safe.
Red means stop.
Yellow means Daddy.
White means home.
Maybe the song was not a song.
Maybe it was a test.
“Lily, when the woman who came home sang it, what color did she say?”
“Yellow.”
Daddy.
Alexander’s breath changed.
“What did Mommy used to say?”
“Green.”
He looked at Daniel.
“What does green mean?”
Daniel shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
Evelyn whispered, “Claire used green for danger.”
Alexander stood.
The woman who returned had intentionally said yellow.
Daddy.
Was she sending Lily a message?
Daddy is involved?
Daddy is the target?
Or was she not Claire?
They searched the archive for Subject Seven.
Thousands of records.
Most encrypted.
One finally opened.
SUBJECT 07 IDENTITY DUPLICATION TRIAL.
Alexander’s heart stopped.
Two photographs appeared.
Two young women.
Nearly identical.
One was Claire.
The other looked almost exactly like her.
Name:
CARA MERCER.
Rebecca’s older sister.
Daniel whispered, “My God.”
Alexander opened the history.
Cara Mercer entered Blackridge at age seventeen.
Claire entered at nineteen.
They were trained together.
Cosmetic procedures narrowed physical differences.
Voice training.
Behavioral mirroring.
The purpose was written clinically:
Test interchangeable identity integration within high-value family systems.
Price swore.
“They created doubles.”
Alexander’s mind raced through four years of memories.
The Claire who married him.
The Claire who gave birth to Lily.
Which one?
Another file opened.
SUBJECT 07A: CLAIRE WARREN.
SUBJECT 07B: CARA MERCER.
Rebecca had a sister.
And one of them had been trained to become Claire.
Lily touched Alexander’s arm.
“Daddy?”
He looked down.
“When Rebecca showed me Mommy on the TV…”
“Yes?”
“She said there were two.”
Alexander froze.
“What exactly did she say?”
Lily thought carefully.
“She said, ‘One loves you. One remembers you.’”
Silence.
Price asked, “Which woman returned to the mansion?”
No one knew.
Alexander searched the surveillance from the reservoir.
The woman he rescued.
Scar on left cheek.
Archive records showed Claire Warren received a facial injury during captivity.
Cara Mercer had a childhood scar.
Also left cheek.
Impossible.
Then Daniel found another video.
Recorded three years earlier.
Rebecca faced the camera.
“If Alexander ever accesses this file, then we failed.”
She looked exhausted.
“Claire Bennett is alive.”
Alexander leaned closer.
Rebecca continued.
“But there are two women answering to that name.”
Daniel whispered, “Jesus.”
“One remained loyal to us. One returned to Blackridge.”
Rebecca looked directly into the camera.
“The problem is, I no longer know which one is which.”
The video ended.
Alexander sat in silence.
Then Lily said:
“I do.”
Every adult looked at her.
She pointed to the photograph of Claire and Cara.
May you like
“That one is Mommy.”
Her finger rested on Cara Mercer.
