Chapter 11 - Claire Comes Home

Claire Bennett returned to the mansion under armed protection.

Lily did not know how to react.

Alexander wheeled her into the sunroom.

Claire stood beside the window.

Thinner than before.

Scarred.

Older.

But alive.

Lily stared.

Claire slowly knelt.

“Hi, sweetheart.”

Lily looked at Alexander.

“Is that really Mommy?”

Claire covered her mouth.

Alexander nodded.

“Yes.”

Lily’s hands tightened around the wheelchair arms.

“Why didn’t you come home?”

Claire’s face collapsed.

She crawled the final distance and rested her hands on Lily’s knees.

“I tried.”

“No, you didn’t.”

Alexander closed his eyes.

Claire absorbed the words.

“You’re right.”

Lily began crying.

“You left me.”

“I was trying to keep you safe.”

“Rebecca said that too.”

Claire flinched.

“She hurt me.”

“I know.”

“She said you hated me.”

Claire shook her head rapidly.

“Never.”

“She said I was broken.”

Claire touched Lily’s face.

“You are not broken.”

Lily turned away.

Claire did not force her.

“I’m going to stay right here,” she whispered. “As long as it takes.”

Later, Alexander and Claire sat alone in the library.

Four years stood between them.

Neither knew where to begin.

Alexander chose anger because it was easier than grief.

“You should have trusted me.”

Claire nodded.

“I know.”

“You let me bury you.”

“Yes.”

“You watched Lily grow up through cameras.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“Sometimes.”

“You knew she was being medicated.”

“Not until recently.”

“You knew Rebecca was in my house.”

“That was never supposed to happen.”

“You knew her.”

“Yes.”

“You loved her?”

Claire looked up.

“Like a sister.”

Alexander laughed bitterly.

“She poured ice water over our daughter.”

“I know.”

“And you still call her Anna.”

“Because Rebecca is the name Blackridge gave her.”

“She made choices.”

“So did I.”

Alexander stood.

“Don’t compare yourself to her.”

“You don’t know what I’ve done.”

The room became still.

Alexander stared at her.

“What did you do?”

Claire looked toward the closed door.

“When Daniel extracted me after the crash, we planned to expose Blackridge.”

“What went wrong?”

“William knew.”

“How?”

“Someone inside Daniel’s network betrayed us.”

“Rebecca?”

“No.”

Claire took a breath.

“We hid in Vermont. Three weeks later, men came.”

“What happened?”

“Daniel escaped. I didn’t.”

Alexander’s face tightened.

“They held you?”

“For eight months.”

“Where?”

“Different places.”

“What did they do?”

Claire did not answer directly.

“They wanted the archive.”

“What is it?”

“The Blackridge master record.”

“Where?”

Claire looked at him.

“I don’t know.”

“But Lily does?”

“Maybe.”

“How?”

Claire explained.

Before the staged crash, she discovered that William’s entire operation used a decentralized encrypted system.

The central access sequence changed every month.

One night, while Lily was playing in William’s office, Claire entered the code.

Lily watched.

“She remembered sequences unusually well,” Claire said.

“She was eighteen months old.”

“She remembered songs after hearing them once. Patterns. Colors. Numbers.”

“So William injured her because she saw a password?”

“No.”

Claire looked ashamed.

“He injured her because I refused to give him what she remembered.”

Alexander stared.

“He used our daughter to punish you.”

“And to test whether trauma strengthened or erased memory.”

Alexander’s hands shook.

“Why didn’t the injury kill her?”

“It nearly did.”

He turned away.

Claire continued.

“The doctors told William the protocol failed.”

“But?”

“It didn’t.”

Alexander looked back.

“Lily repeated part of the access sequence while unconscious.”

His blood chilled.

“Then why hasn’t William taken her?”

“He tried.”

“When?”

Claire’s eyes filled.

“The day of the accident.”

Alexander understood.

“She wasn’t supposed to come home.”

“No.”

“Who stopped them?”

“Rebecca.”

Silence.

Alexander stared.

Claire nodded.

“Anna saved Lily that day.”

That truth was almost impossible to reconcile with the woman who had abused her.

“Why?”

“Because she still had a part of herself William hadn’t destroyed.”

“And now?”

Claire looked away.

“I don’t know.”

Alexander sat.

“Rebecca said Lily already opened the archive.”

Claire’s face changed.

“When?”

“At the reservoir.”

Claire stood immediately.

“What exactly did she say?”

Alexander repeated it.

Claire went pale.

“Take me to the hidden room under the mansion.”

They descended to Room 17.

Claire stopped at the doorway.

“I built this.”

Alexander stared.

“With Daniel?”

“Yes.”

She walked to the old desk.

Opened a compartment beneath it.

Empty.

“No.”

“What?”

“There was a drive here.”

“Gone?”

Claire searched frantically.

“It can’t be.”

Alexander looked at the disconnected phone.

“The ringing started when we found the key.”

Claire turned.

“That wasn’t a telephone.”

“What was it?”

“An archive handshake signal.”

Alexander stared.

“So when I opened the room…”

“You connected it.”

“To what?”

Claire looked toward the monitors.

“To Lily.”

One monitor flickered.

A login screen appeared.
