Chapter 12 - The Archive Opens

The first files appeared at 2:13 a.m.
Thousands.
Financial records.
Medical reports.
Government correspondence.
Video archives.
Names.
So many names.
Alexander watched his family’s legacy collapse across a computer screen.
Blackridge had not been one program.
It was a network.
Hospitals.
Rehabilitation centers.
Private schools.
Charitable foundations.
Judges.
Doctors.
Executives.
Politicians.
Some knowingly participated.
Others accepted money without asking what it bought.
Claire whispered, “This could destroy hundreds of people.”
Daniel stood behind her.
“It should.”
Price called federal prosecutors he personally trusted.
Copies of the archive began transferring to isolated servers.
Alexander searched Lily Bennett.
Results: 642 files.
He could not open them.
Claire stopped him.
“Not tonight.”
“I need to know everything.”
“No. You need to be her father.”
“She was tortured because of my family.”
“And reading six hundred reports won’t change that before sunrise.”
Alexander knew she was right.
He hated it.
They searched William.
More than twelve thousand entries.
Daniel opened one marked CONTINUITY SUCCESSION.
A document appeared.
If Chairman William Bennett becomes incapacitated, operational control transfers according to bloodline authority.
Alexander frowned.
“Bloodline?”
Claire scrolled.
Primary successor: Alexander Bennett.
His stomach dropped.
“No.”
Daniel looked at him.
“You never signed?”
“Of course not.”
Claire examined the authorization.
“It uses your biometric key.”
Alexander laughed.
“I didn’t give one.”
Daniel looked toward the system.
“You inherited one.”
“What does that mean?”
“The archive recognizes Bennett blood.”
Alexander remembered the screen activating after he used Claire’s key.
“Why did it say Lily?”
Claire looked pale.
“Because she may be the highest validated successor.”
Price frowned.
“A five-year-old?”
“Blackridge doesn’t care about age. It cares about genetic continuity.”
Alexander stared at the screen.
His daughter was not simply a witness.
The system viewed her as an owner.
A notification appeared.
REMOTE ADMINISTRATOR CONNECTED.
Everyone froze.
Someone else was inside the archive.
Files began disappearing.
Daniel typed rapidly.
“They’re wiping records.”
“Stop them.”
“I’m trying.”
Claire leaned toward the screen.
“Block external node twelve.”
Daniel stopped.
“How do you know that?”
“I used it before.”
He obeyed.
Deletion slowed.
Then stopped.
A message appeared.
HELLO, CLAIRE.
Claire’s face drained of color.
Another line.
YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED DEAD.
Alexander stepped closer.
“William?”
Claire shook her head.
“He’s in custody.”
Price confirmed.
William remained under armed guard at a Connecticut hospital.
Another message appeared.
ALEXANDER DOES NOT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE.
Alexander looked at Claire.
“What does that mean?”
She said nothing.
The screen changed.
A video loaded.
Claire, age nineteen.
Blackridge therapy room.
She sat across from Dr. Vale.
Vale asked, “State your designation.”
Claire answered calmly.
“Subject Seven.”
Alexander stared.
The room went silent.
The video continued.
Vale asked, “Primary objective?”
Claire replied:
“Integrate with the Bennett bloodline.”
Alexander stepped backward.
“No.”
Claire’s eyes filled.
“Alex.”
The video showed younger Claire receiving photographs.
Alexander’s photographs.
College.
Business school.
Public events.
Vale’s voice:
“You will establish trust with Alexander Bennett.”
Claire on screen answered:
“Yes.”
“You will marry him if necessary.”
“Yes.”
“You will produce a child.”
“Yes.”
Alexander shut the video off.
Claire stood frozen.
Daniel whispered, “Claire…”
“You knew?” Alexander asked.
Daniel shook his head.
“Not this.”
Alexander looked at his wife.
“Was our entire marriage an assignment?”
“No.”
“You met me because they told you to.”
“Yes.”
“You married me because they told you to.”
“No.”
“You had Lily because they told you to?”
Claire burst into tears.
“No!”
Alexander’s voice rose.
“Then tell me what is true!”
Claire stepped toward him.
“I was nineteen when they recruited me.”
“Recruited?”
“Conditioned. Manipulated. Call it whatever you want. My father owed William money. He gave them access to me.”
Alexander stared.
“You were part of Blackridge.”
“Yes.”
“You got close to Daniel.”
“Yes.”
“You got close to me.”
“Yes.”
“And somewhere along the way you decided to expose them?”
Claire nodded.
“When?”
“Before our wedding.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I thought if you knew how we met, you would never believe the love came later.”
Alexander looked away.
Claire whispered, “I did love you.”
Past tense.
It hurt more than expected.
“Did?”
“I do.”
The screen beeped again.
A new message.
ROMANTIC REUNION LATER.
YOU HAVE NINE MINUTES.
Then a live video appeared.
Lily’s bedroom.
Empty wheelchair beside the bed.
May you like
Empty bed.
Alexander ran.
